[EB003] EB Trainer Grotesk is a typeface by Antoine Elsensohn (@antoineelsensohn). In 2018, while working for the Paris-based graphic design studio Spassky Fischer (@spasskyfischer), Elsensohn began designing a new typeface, Trainer Grotesk. He wants to provide both Helvetica and Neue Haas Grotesk, an extension that he uses on a daily basis, with a new dimension, a less dogmatic intensity, and a more relaxed presence, perhaps even a form of nonchalance. Elsensohn is, in a way, moving back and forth in time, reusing and amplifying Max Miedinger’s original gesture in Neue Haas Grotesk, a typeface known for its very short ascenders and descenders in its medium version. Elsensohn, picking up this narrative, enlarges the x-height of the typeface, achieving the desired formal tension. The simplicity of Trainer Grotesk’s design and the rhythm it exudes are visually pleasing.
