I can’t speak for anyone else who does it, but I don’t make a lot of money by casting type: I have skills and equipment that not many people have, and I feel a sense of responsibility in doing my part to keep it all going. I worked at the Type Archive for about six or seven years, making matrices and cutting punches, and until its recent closure I was also one of the very few people able to borrow display matrices (14pt-72pt) from the Loan Library. In many cases, these are the only sets of mats for particular typefaces. Now that the Science Museum has closed the South London site and relocated the Monotype collection to a site near Swindon, there’s a real risk that these mats will be kept in storage, and never used again. I’ve been in conversation with the Science Museum for some time now, about how I might be able to continue to access, or even relocate, the Loan Library, and those conversations are ongoing. Essentially, if you’d like to support this idea, then please fill in the survey linked in my bio, and tell them what you think.
