The Downey Rose Float Association's 2024 Rose Parade entry, "Rhythm of the Caribbean," stands out as one of the six ‘self-built’ locally funded floats. The Association made its inaugural appearance in the parade 110 years ago in 1913 and formally came into existence in 1954. Kelley G. Roberts Jr., the construction manager with 44 years of experience working on Downey's floats, distinguishes the Association's approach: "The difference between a professional float builder and a self float builder is that we do it for the pure love of being creative. We are not in it for the money." Roberts emphasizes the essence of their all-volunteer undertaking, highlighting the satisfaction derived from "making something out of a drawing." He further explains, "There is no hobby store to go and buy these parts. We will take a picture and make every one of those components by hand."
