Our April athlete of the month is @heatherlanette. Heather is a welcoming face in our 5am class she is always there to encourage and lift up a friend. #tuesdaytip #weirdestcueever “Be weird about it!” Is what I said to the athlete. We were working on a primer, which is a small movement with a PVC pipe or an empty barbell that helps “prime” a portion of one of the Olympic lifts. These small movements are important to do because they get the motor pathway moving along so that when the weights get bigger, this movement takes place successfully and is more natural and doesn’t take much thought. The primer was the “scarecrow clean” for clean turnover, which is a pretty small movement. The clean turnover is the portion of the clean where the bar has basically gotten as high as it’s going to go and it’s up to the athlete to turn their arms over, i.e. come up through sort of a scarecrow position, keeping the bar close to the body and then delivering the barbell onto the shoulders. The athlete was tentative, not quite committing to going full scarecrow mode with a slightly heavy PVC pipe, and then turning the bar over slowly. The point of using this PVC pipe in this movement is to almost exaggerate the movement so that the movement pattern is created with aggression in mind, so that when a normal weight is used, the aggressive nature and timing of the turnover happens without thinking about it so hard. Getting back to the tentative athlete, I finally just blurted out: “Be weird about it!” And she got it. Suddenly there it was: full elbows up, bar staying close, turnover aggressive and well timed. Is this the weirdest cue ever? I actually think “second pancake” is but that’s a story for another day, hahaha! Hope this helps and happy lifting. It’s fairly simple. If the body can handle the demands placed upon it, injuries don’t occur. If the body cannot handle the demands placed upon it, injuries occur. This doesn’t mean there aren’t unlucky injuries, there are, every day, nor does it imply that injuries don’t happen to highly physically prepared people. In my early 20’s I was a pretty “prepared” dude. I was young, heavily trained, and technically sound in the weight room. I was performing a set of 315 on the bench press and after the 14th rep of the set, my pec tore off. Ouch. I remember that feeling like it was yesterday and despite the physical pain, I was more upset that I would have adjust my training around the injury. After getting through the emotional toil, it was a pretty simple equation: My body was prepared for 14 reps, but not 15 reps. When I attempted to cross the threshold, injury occurred. The reasoning beyond that, didn’t really matter. It didn’t matter how strong I was or if I didn’t sleep well the night before, or if I didn’t “deserve” this injury. I wasn’t prepared. If I was, the injury would not have occurred. Period. And this is as true for me as it is you, and everybody else in the world. Nobody is immune to injury, however fortunately for us, we can influence, positively or negatively, the likelihoods of injury with our behavior. Why can Patrick Mahomes have his body contorted in 17 different directions while a 290 animal tries to kill him and stand back up without injury? He’s prepared for the demands he’s exposed to in sport. Why does every 13-year-old have little league elbow and we are seeing more TJ’s than ever before under the age of 18? Well, it’s again, simple, the modern youth athletes’ bodies are not prepared for the demands placed upon them. The abundance of specific sport volume coupled with the SERIOUS lack of general preparation leaves injury as an all but guaranteed ticking time bomb. Ignoring this and hoping this doesn’t happen to your kid (which is our current practice) isn’t the solution. We need systemic change in philosophy, or our kids will continue to pay for adults lack of leadership.

Complex doesn’t always = better. It’s always a nice reminder you don’t need a million exercises, just a few performed, with the right dose of volume and intensity. Here’s a throwback to working with Australian 7’s Rugby athlete @simonkennewelll - with the goal to return to the team after some time away (which he achieved 🤝) With an uninterrupted schedule at the time, we had the luxury of really being able to dial in our key focuses - these being address a few niggles and aim to shift our force/velocity profile without losing one of his biggest assets on the field being his strength and size. Here’s a snippet of some of the key bilateral lifts we looked at for lower body during that time: - Hang Power Clean (VBT Target) - Back Squat (VBT Target) - Elevated Trap Bar Deadlift - Hip Thrust Throughout this time we kept these pretty consistent - manipulating tempo, height, velocity etc. Keep in mind in addition to this was our targeted individual needs, plyometrics and upper/ lower body supplementary exercises in the gym + speed/ change of direction work on the field. #strengthandconditioning #performance #athlete

How to increase shoulder stability Research shows that open kinetic chain (hand free to move) and closed kinetic chain (hand movement fixed or limited) movements are both effective at improving glenohumeral proprioception and strength. So, which is better? Open or closed? Neither is superior as both have excellent but different benefits. So utilise open and closed chain movements like a pincer attack to improve shoulder performance. Think of it like this, in open kinetic chain, the hand moves around the shoulder. In closed kinetic chain, the body moves around the shoulder. If you understand what is required for a high performing shoulder, this will make a lot of sense. CONFIDENCE IN YOUR REHAB JOURNEY Being confident during your recovery journey and feeling competent drives motivation to stick with the program and therefore creates adherence which in itself creates a more positive outlook, more confidence ... a positive cycle. How can we improve confidence According to Bandura the following 6 sources are the main drivers of self confidence and self efficacy 1. Previous accomplishments: previously having returned from injury. Having learnt the do s and don'ts from that experience 2. Vicarious learning: in terms of rehab using other's experience and successful return to sport to motivate you. Be careful not to compare yourself too much as you might progress at a different pace. 3. Verbal persuasion: Becoming aware of negative or catastrophizing black and white thinking. Try and reframe to more functional self talk. Note to therapists and coaches this also includes the way you speak to your athletes and provide feedback. Offer positive and instructive feedback over too much criticism. 4. Visualization and imagery: visualising a succesful return to sport and visualising successful fames/competitions is very powerful. 5. Physiological state: This is in your hands. Note you can use imagery to train technique before being able to do certain exercises or movements as this has been shown to light up the same pathways as actually performing the movement 6. Emotional state: Using breathing or visualising you are able to handle nerves and negative emotional States better or turn them around Confidence and self efficacy doesn't happen on its own. Our knees can take a beating from training - especially if we push hard. An easy sequence if you find yourself with particularly sore or stiff knees. In acute stages of a flare-ups (1-3 days after training), keep things pain-free. Strength and range should return relatively quickly if your knees are just sensitive. PLANNING YOUR S&C SCHEDULE FOR BOXERS 📝🏋🏽‍♂️🥊 SWIPE for some examples how to plan your training week ➡️ Session commitment depends on everyone’s boxing schedule, work and other commitments 👊🏽 Meaning some people may only be able to commit 2x days to strength & conditioning and other people up to 5x👌🏽 Planning this is important to make sure we’re getting the most out of our training and recovering ‼️ SWIPE to see some examples of how this may look ➡️ TOP TIPS 🧠⬇️ 1️⃣- Boxing and skills training should take a priority. Remember skills pay the bills so make sure you’re focusing on this. 2️⃣- No more than 2-3 hard back to back training days before a lower intense day. This is especially important when training 2x a day and allows us to recover and perform in our other sessions. On this day focus on skills and a recovery run. 3️⃣- if short on training days can do both strength & conditioning back to back. This does make a longer session of around 90 minutes, just make sure you do your strength first. 4️⃣- if training twice a day allow 4-6 hours between session. This ensures we’re recovering and getting the most from training. 5️⃣- Aim for 2x strength sessions, 2-3x HIIT conditioning, 1x recovery run. This will optimise your adaptions so time to change is shorter. Any more will hinder recovering and is time that could be spent boxing. 6️⃣- Avoid doing strength on back to back days and the same with conditioning. This optimises performance in each session and allows us to recover and adapt from training. Thia is called pronation. This occurs when your weight shifts toward the inside of the foot while lunging. The arch of your foot collapses, and your knee buckles inward toward the midline of your body. The primary cause of this pronation is improper function of the muscles along the arches of your feet. It can also happen when your ankles are weak. Fix 1️⃣ Try foam rolling your calves, ankles, arches, bottoms of your feet, and even your thighs (the impact on your legs can extend all the way to your feet). Fix 2️⃣ Add in some calf stretches, too: Perform a soleus stretch by placing your hands on a wall while in a lunge position. Drive your knee toward the wall, keeping your heel in contact with the ground. Look to feel a deep stretch just above the achilles tendon. 🫶
