Thanks to the @concordnhchamber and @kimballjenkins for inviting us to the Business After Hours last night! We wore these #DiversityInThe603 shirts and were approached by a few people who really loved and appreciated the message. We spoke with a young Filipino woman who told us about her struggles growing up here in Concord as one of the very few Filipinos in school. She talked about how grateful she is that the Multicultural Festival exists because it is an opportunity for her and others from different backgrounds to connect with and celebrate their cultures. This is what it’s all about. Through the Multicultural Festival, we’ve provided a venue for New Americans to earn money and gain skills related to food production and service. Especially thanks to our partnership with @nh_food_bank ! Our co-chair, Ghana Sharma, recently received his SevSafe Manager’s Certification. Some of our food vendors have been able to participate in other community events. Batulo’s Kitchen will soon open so you can get Somali Meat Pies every day of the week instead on only once a year! But these are no small feats and it’s taken a lot of work to get to this point. Today was the 12th annual Herb & Garden Day, and my 6th time organizing it. The weather was perfect, the turnout was great, the vendors were happy, the programming was top notch, and the food … *Chefs Kiss* The best part was having Sindy and Ghana on my team. They are my co-chairs for the Concord Multicultural Festival, and together we’ve been working hard to expand the reach of the Festival’s mission. It’s been a bumpy road full of many barriers, but we keep going with our goals in mind. Since I’ve known her, Sindy has grown so much as an artist and coordinator - she continues to ROCK as the entertainment director of the Festival; she just submitted her application to be listed on the NH State Council on the Arts’ Traditional Artist Roster; and is always spreading joy through dance and culture. Ghana is one of the hardest working people I know - he is always trying to empower Bhutanese people, preserve the traditions, and share the culture with the broader community. He’s always learning - taking courses and getting certifications. His most recent accomplishment is receiving the ServSafe Management Certification, which allows him to be a leader in our food production for events. So, when I needed food vendors for Herb & Garden Day, I knew I could count on Sindy and Ghana, and I knew we could offer something unique to this event: Ethnic food vendors! I used to see it as my “worlds colliding” - my events having overlapping details like sponsors, volunteers, food vendors, music - but today I realized that it was more than that: we are accomplishing our goals of expanding the mission of the Concord Multicultural Festival beyond the one day event, and we are accomplishing our mission of creating a more welcoming community by infusing culture into more events and communities and providing more opportunities for New Americans to grow and achieve their own goals.
