This is the frame I bought from Goodwill and refinished. I’m SO PLEASED with how it turned out. From a plain oak frame to this. $15 for the custom mat and $5 for the frame. The pro-rated cost for the paint and wax was less than $2. So less than $25 to frame an oddly sized piece of original art. My collection of handmade art is honestly one of my most prized possessions. I cannot wait to have everything nicely framed and hung. I’ve been collecting nice frames for YEARS from Goodwill, yard sales, and curbside. And I have art from several artist friends, my kids, and my own art as well as pieces I’ve found second hand and ones I’ve bought directly from the artist. It's time for another #frameitfriday post. I had #funfriday stuck in my head when I was thinking of the theme, and I thought this painting covered both bases! This is another Mic Carlson (micasso.com) piece that I ADORE. I think its title is actually "The Dancer", but when I saw it, all I could think of was Lola from the "Copa Cabana" song. 😂 The original is huge. Every time I had to use the facilities, I would see this on the walk back to my office and it would make me feel so happy. I love the colors and just the joy she exudes. One day I asked Mic how much for the painting, and when he told me, I asked him for a print. 🤣 I really didn't have space for the original, nor could I afford that. The print I got is quite large. It's a canvas print and we have this little alcove in our foyer that's exactly the right size for her! Ironically, she's en route to the facilities too. (I never realized that before...I'm *dying* now!) She came framed in a fancy, but simple, open backed frame, like you'd find off the shelf at a Hobby Lobby. You'd almost think the frame would compete with her, but they look fabulous together! I think putting her in a plain black frame would've killed her vibe. I hope this series is helping you figure out different ways to frame your art. Let me know in the comments below! Welcome back to another #frameitfriday ...this time, we're looking at some really creative framing, if I do say so myself! This is not one of my pieces. There's an artist I love in Grand Rapids, Michigan named Mic Carlson (micasso.com) and I have a few of his pieces. I was lucky enough that my office was on the same floor as his studio, so I got to see his work every time I had to leave our suite to use the facilities. Not a great story, but it was so inspiring to see his work several times every day! This was a poster he did for Festival in Grand Rapids and I love the colors so much! But how do you frame it? It's so electric and alive! I got this one custom framed. There's a pair of metallic frames here. The "mat" is orange, and the outer frame is purple. Maybe this doesn't suit everyone's decor, but it makes me happy, and that's what's super important, right? I also have a print of just the inner part of the design...the print has a white border, so that one went into a more "standard" white mat/black frame. Though the mat has a black lining. It looks really sharp! I know the angle is weird, but it's the only way I can keep the glare out of the photo. (If you ever have the chance to see Mic's work in person or meet him, you'll be in for a treat! Welcome to another edition of #FrameItFriday where I take you through my house and show off our art collection! This one is a two-fer! Both of these are my pieces...the left one is a canvas print (of a paint palette on a business card!) and the other is one of my black and white photos from when I went back to school for my degree. Not all canvas pieces need to be framed! If the sides are finished, you can just hang a canvas straight on your wall without any frame! I can't think of a cheaper way to "frame" something can you? 😂 The photograph was a la Cheapie frame from Meijer. It came with the mat, and because everything was a standard size, it was a matter of cleaning the glass and popping the photo right in there. Ever wonder how to frame art? Yeah, me too. 🤣 I started thinking about it and I thought, "Geez. I'm selling artwork, and people might like it, but they don't know what to do with it. I'm not framing it because it's expensive and hard to ship and I don't know what someone will like. What if I shared what I do?" So welcome to my first #FrameItFriday post! We have a lot of art in the house (it's not all my art) and I thought you might like to know what I do when it comes to framing. My short answer is, it depends on how cheap I'm feeling. I have some pieces in a $2 frame I found somewhere, and others in $300 custom framing (yeah, I choked on that too.) This is my first acrylic painting on canvas. I was proud of this one, but how do you frame stretched canvas? Take it to Michaels and spend goo gobs of money on custom framing is what I did! 🤮 I can't tell you how guilty I felt spending that much on something *I* made! But they did a wonderful job! This is a larger piece (I want to say the canvas is 16x20) and you don't mat (the white border) canvas. I wanted to mat it, so this is actually double framed. The white frame has a linen texture, and the black frame is relatively plain. You don't put glass on canvas, either. So between the size the the two frames, that's what cost so much. Was it worth it? I think so! So I decided to paint bigger on unstretched canvas for the first time, then decided to make it the first canvas I ever stretch onto bars. No practicing on smaller more manageable works first, nope. A little bit of spare time today to knock out this frame of the same beer mat of old from the old Rutland Brewers . Looks like there’s no glass in it ………… I haven’t used glass for a while , basic float glass is too reflective and not as clear as you’d think . It's been a busy few weeks in the workshop - framing and teaching. One of my students brought in an old piece that he wanted to reframe. Here are the before and after images. We talked about the owner of the piece and the type of frame and dimensions and style she'd like. It's always important to find out, if you can: ❓Who a piece is for ❓What their tastes are ❓Where the piece might hang The responses to these are subject, of course, but they do influence the choices we make when framing. In this case, the item had faded over the years and so we could bring in bright colours or very light whites. Also, there had been a request to reduce the size of the mount, as it seemed to overwhelm the piece. We had a fun day in the workshop. Framing two very different pieces. Joist hangers are supposed to be properly sized for the lumber that they are supporting. In this photo of a detached garage, the 2x10 lumber connections are only joined by tiny joist hangers. Joist hangers create a positive long-lasting connection for perpendicular framing joints, as opposed to end-nailing (a poor practice since end grain is weak) on the back side of one of the members. This issue (improperly sized hangers) is especially common with decks and can lead to structural failure. Två pärltavlor klara och provisoriskt inramade. Motiven inhandlade på Rusta är 40x60cm vilket ställer till det något då det inte är standard ram mått. Jag inhandlade två ramar 50x70cm från Rusta där det ingår vit passepartout även om jag visste det inte skulle passa åtminstone för det mörkare motivet. Jag var däremot osäker om den ljusare motivet skulle funka i vit inramning. . Det gjorde den inte utan bägge motiven bör ha både svart ram och svart passepartout. För att komma till den insikten tejpade jag först upp motiven på ramarnas medföljande papper för sedan kunna mäta hur mycket av passepartouten som behövde skäras bort. Detta gjorde jag med hjälp av linjal, penna och skalpell. Då motiven inte har enbart standard pärlor utan även några större/högre är för-tejpningen till en fördel för att kunna släta ut ytan. Troligtvis behövs det fästas och justeras ytterligare för att då motivet helt slät när det är dags för den riktiga inramningen. #diamondpainting #diyframing
