I know it seems like your dog needs to go somewhere when you are out, but you’d be surprised how many dogs would prefer staying at home, than navigating a group of dogs for hours and hours on end. We have the tools to teach them to be comfortable staying at home while you are out. I’ve been running hour long playgroups with owners present for nearly 10 years, and I can hand over heart say that most dogs are done engaging with other dogs around the 30-45 min mark. After that time, some dogs ask to leave by going to the gate or jumping up at their owner repeatedly. Play skills can and often do deteriorate after the 30-45 min mark, and anxiety or displacement behavior can occur. Then your dog is practicing unwanted and non-consenting behavior or they become overwhelmed. If we see this in a dog at our playgroup we highlight the body language to owners right away, and give that dog space and heavily monitor. Some dogs leave our hourly sessions early because it is more beneficial to them and the group. We don’t want play skill deficits to develop or fear to happen on our watch. We will be modifying the duration of our playgroups very soon, in the interest of the dogs. Watching canine play has always amused and fascinated me. I love to watch mixed breeds ramp it up and play too. But, I particularly like play styles in how some breeds choose to play together, and how individuals within those breeds adopt their own special style. I grew up with working lurchers so the play was very much a combination of speed bursts and shoulders barging. My two Labradors have a good mix of everything with jaw sparring, chase, reciprocal positions, nipping, jumping…the whole shabang! Play is therapy for those playing consensually and for those who like to watch.
