Len's journey is a testament to the power of hope and resilience💙 A diagnosis in 2007 of a rare disease, Familial Amyloidosis, necessitated a heart transplant on 6-11-2008, just three months and one week after being placed on the bottom of the waiting list, Len went into surgery and nearly 12 hours later, awoke to a new heart. Upon recovery Len's new mission in life was to foster organ donation, educate laypersons and medical personnel about this often misdiagnosed disease. Len was a gifted speaker, although he was known to ramble a bit, a loyal friend and a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Len and his wife, Karen traveled to all 7 continents, 121 countries, 80 of which were taken post-transplant between 2008 and 2020. Len never fulfilled his dream to become a pilot but he did fly - bungee jumping in New Zealand, 3 hot air balloon rides over Turkey, Egypt and India, and on a dare from his family, tandem skydiving in Davis. Though he left us last year, his impact echoes on, inspiring us to cherish each day with gratitude and kindness. Because of my donor I can move freely without losing my breath. I don’t have to walk around on life support. I get to shower normally. Leaving my house is easier since I don’t have to make sure I’m charged, as well as my backup batteries. I have the ability to live a relatively normal life again without heart failure. In March 2009, at the age of 37, Randy Fleet initially thought he had the flu. As his symptoms worsened, including difficulty breathing, vomiting, and a persistent cough, he sought medical attention. Initially sent home, Randy's condition took a critical turn, prompting his doctor to call him back and direct him straight to the emergency room. The next morning brought a diagnosis of glomerulonephritis, a kidney disease that often leads to failure, putting Randy on immediate dialysis. Facing this challenging journey, Randy had the support of ten friends and family members, each stepping forward to be tested as a living kidney donor. Among them, his younger brother, Dustin, emerged as a perfect match. After undergoing a comprehensive testing regime to ensure his health and suitability, Dustin selflessly donated his kidney to Randy on November 25, 2009, a day etched in gratitude just before Thanksgiving. “I am alive and will never take that for granted. The cause was unknown, leading to respiratory distress and intubation. Transferred to a larger medical center, she found herself on a heart-lung machine.
