Teacher Britany Blair's life was saved by Amanda Bennett, a fellow staff member who donated a kidney. After seeing Britany's dialysis equipment, Amanda filled out the donor application when a mutual friend shared Britany's GoFundMe page. Amanda was a match for Britany and selflessly gave her the gift of life. Meet Emery one of our Little Victors from our 2024 calendar. “Emery was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Learning of this diagnosis during pregnancy turned our world upside down, but with an amazing care team and support, a plan was formulated, and some hope restored. Emery’s plan was to proceed with a three-series set of surgeries to help sustain her wellbeing and overall quality of life. During the intubation process of the Norwood procedure, her care team discovered closed trachea rings which resulted in a change of plans, including several unanticipated surgeries/procedures; our world turned upside down once more. Emery survives with a genetic disorder, VACTERL, having experienced ECMO twice, two cardiac arrest events, minor brain injuries and seizures. After 439 days consecutively in the hospital, Emery finally came home April 2023, post heart transplant. Maureen was 29 years old when she was diagnosed with kidney disease and found herself in need of a lifesaving transplant. On November 24, 2009, Maureen received the gift of a new kidney from a living donor. After her experience, she entered nursing school and later became a dialysis nurse. For the past decade, Maureen has worked in the dialysis field. In 2017, Maureen's dad, Mike, unexpectedly passed away, and his family was asked if they would say yes to Mike being a cornea and tissue donor. Maureen and her family knew how grateful he was for the transplant that saved Maureen’s life, and they were confident that he would want to be a donor. Malinda Herrera has been a steady, intelligent, compassionate donation champion as an ICU bedside nurse at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for more than a decade. She’s saved hundreds of lives by helping patients give their final gifts to others. For service members, veterans and their families, transplant services are available at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center's prestigious Organ Transplant Service. As the only certified transplant center within the Military Health System, the program is one of the oldest and most successful in the country, the program's doctors said. In 2023, it performed 55 kidney transplants. While Walter Reed's program only transplants kidneys in-house, it takes care of patients who need other kinds of transplants as well, such as liver, pancreas, heart or lungs. Most service members and beneficiaries don't know how to navigate the complex transplant process, so they call Walter Reed for help. The doctors will refer those patients with needs, other than a kidney, to centers in its network. Walter Reed's team will either get them a transplant in the Washington, D.C., area or they'll make calls and put in referrals to get the process going at another hospital. The Walter Reed program aims to do about 30% of its transplants from living donors, Robinson said, because those donations are the most efficient and long-lasting. However, people are often afraid to donate and don't think it's worth it due to a common misconception — that an average kidney recipient will only survive for another 5-7 years. Living donors can only donate a kidney, a piece of their liver or certain other tissues, but there are several other organs and tissues that come from deceased donors who have suffered brain or cardiac death. We strive to help you restore your life to functioning, prospering and addiction free confident women, standing on God’s promises. We are a 1 year Christ centered transitional living program for women coming out of addiction and incarceration. We appreciate all that the community does to help this program support God’s children. One year ago, I was making the journey to the operating room to receive the life changing gift of organ donation. Today, I celebrate my re-birth day. I’m forever grateful for the liver that was so graciously given to me from a family who no doubt still mourns the loss of their loved one. In a perfect world, I would love to have the opportunity to meet said family and pour out my heart to them for saving my life. Maybe someday that can happen, but more than anything I hope they can feel the love and gratitude I’m sending their way today. I hope they would find some joy in all I’ve been able to accomplish in my first bonus year. The road to healing has not been swift, nor full of rainbows and sunshine. There have been twists and turns that I was not prepared for, but I am still pushing forward. Even though I’m currently in the midst of a setback, I’m still here and for that I am proud of myself. I want to thank everyone who has stood beside me through this whirlwind of a year. My friends and family who have gone above and beyond to love me loud and keep my spirits high even when I had trouble seeing the light. For picking up those phone calls when I was at my wits end and providing much needed comfort in times I needed it most. It’s because of you that I have exuded such strength through this transplant process. Thank you to my medical team for being the BEST. I know that without you I would not be here today. Your constant care and support pre and post transplant has been top notch. Shoutout to those of you who advocated for me when things started taking a turn for the worse and those that made financial donations to help alleviate the numerous hospital bills I have accrued. As I sit in the waiting room for yet another scan and the tears begin to well in my eyes, I look forward to all the magic that life has in store for me. today I got clearance to leave the hospital and what a send off it was! I owe the team that worked with me EVERYTHING. Can’t wait to visit them all in the future. As for now, I still have a long road ahead of me.
