When I started drag as the character of Mr Brake Down, he was very much an exploration of the man I wanted to be. He started out a relatively tame compere and cabaret singer, the host with the most, a tribute artist, an impersonator and occasional wit. Now that transition has gifted me with that persona 24/7, Brake has become a totally unhinged lunatic on stage who is constantly pushing himself to be ever more ridiculous and surprising. And I couldn’t be happier with this journey, honestly. I love singing, hosting, being a charmer and a wit, but this new direction for Brake feels so wildly different from day to day me, and that’s what I want my drag to represent now it’s in new dawning. He’s a storytelling clown, offering narratives firmly focused on trans voices, and a joyful escape from the woes of our queer little world, one that’s sorely needed in such dire times. If you’ve not had the pleasure of seeing me recently, you ought to come back and witness the new Brake for yourself. He’s quite the spectacle, bolder, brighter, and better than ever. I started performing ‘Why Does It Always Rain On Me’ as a bit of a dig at the bloody awful weather at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2022, only to bring it back in 2023 and have nothing but brilliant sunshine for the entire fortnight I was there. Just goes to show you can’t predict anything in this life, so if you want rain, bring it with you! ‘Walking In Memphis’ is a different story, and one that always makes me think of my dad. When I was performing the debut of this utterly ridiculous One Hit Blunders slapstick medley at this month’s @upsidedowncabaret , I had a sudden vision of my father laughing his lungs out from the crowd as I frantically raced through prop after prop, wild costume changes and sudden shifts in music, only to finally land back in Memphis with this superb confetti rain shower. It’s exactly the kind of Frank Spencer-esque clowning nonsense he raised me on, but with those heartfelt nods to the music he loved. He’d be proud, I know it. And I intend to live every moment, on stage or not, in a way that he’d continue to be entertained and impressed by. When I was a kid, I hated nothing more in the world than being laughed at. I think that kids with something more complex than the standard straight cisgendered experience tend to grow up more quickly in their minds, and I always had a yearning to be around adult company, to mature faster, to be more serious. I think I was chasing some kind of clarity and meaning that I was too young to grasp, but I wanted it so badly that I wanted to wish my childhood away in the hopes that I’d suddenly know what it was that was bothering me when I finally grew up. So anybody poking fun, laughing, joking, trying to get me to be silly, well that stuff wounded me very deeply for reasons I couldn’t put my finger on. Being laughed at was embarrassing, even if it was for objectively good, funny reasons. Of course, I did grow up, and the meaning I was seeking made even less sense when the world saw me in the wrong body, and being a figure of fun was even more horrifying than ever before. Transition has hit me like a ton of bricks in the last (almost) eleven months, and it’s unlocked a great many freedoms in me, but most especially the freedom to have fun again, and be the big kid that I locked away too early in my frantic search for the missing pieces of myself. Turns out, I’m a blood hilarious guy, both on and off the stage, and there’s absolutely nothing standing in my way anymore. I am your clown, for your delight and entertainment, and I couldn’t be prouder that my particular brand of slapstick stupidity and facial expressions brings grins of delight and deep belly laughs to every audience I have the pleasure of performing for. There is nothing more joyful in the world than knowing that I make people laugh now, and that’s a heck of a 180 for the little kid crying at the caravan park kids’ club because people thought their dancing was ‘a bit funny’.
