During this course participants will deepen their understanding of Knife and TMA disciplines and the techniques required for successful performance on theatre stage. Students will learn about accuracy, safety, and other fundamental skills needed when engaged in dramatic physical encounters. Main focus of the classes is learning the choreography and creating a scene. At the end of the workshop participants with minimum of 30 hours of previous experience will have an opportunity to take the official NSFS certification test in Knife. Note that this course is open only for members of DCF, NSFS or other Nordic national organization. Cost is 105€, which covers three days of training, certification test and a certificate. This July I was assisting for two weeks at the Nordic Stage Fight Society’s summer workshop. Thank you @estonianstagefightsociety for arranging it! It was a pleasure and honor to get to work with Ian Rose, a Fight Master with Fight Directors Canada and The Society of American Fight Directors. I got to assist him in Rapier & Dagger class (btw, all our students passed the certification!), revive some longtime forgotten skills at his Cloak & Sword class and drop by to have some fun and learn new at Rapier and Smallsword classes. The footwork drill I will never forget and so many insights into blade work! I was also assisting our @dramaticcombatfinland teacher @iiro.heikkila, who has taught me during the last five years so much! Humbled and glad to stand side by side and teach Broadsword (and yes, all our students passed the tests too!). All in all I feel very grateful to have had such great teachers, who are now guiding me on my own path to become one. I’m also grateful for great friends that stage combat brought into my life! ❤️ And the crazy heads on the third picture are the 2023 assistants. NSFS’s future is in good hands! 📸 @johan.elm P.S. What are the different ways that a character can die? How do you act pain believably? What is an effective death scene? How do you act reaction? Stage combat is more than simply memorizing choreography and learning proper technique. It is is a form of storytelling, it shows characters at their most primal, emotionally heightened state. This Fight Sunday concentrates on what makes the fight look real: physical and mental actions and reactions. It is open to all who always wanted to learn about performing and creating stories of violence. The style of the weapon offers a way for beginners to find a lowered stance, a grounded form, and grace in blade work. The weapon’s weight often provides a physical challenge in blade work and safety. The weapon relies heavily on cuts, also utilizing thrusts, and extra care needs to be taken in power management. Broadswords used in classes resemble the longswords of the 14th to the 16th centuries but the principles of this discipline can easily be adapted to eastern or western swords that are cut oriented. . This workshop explores the dramatic outcomes if all does not go to plan, or hero’s in a tight squeeze only have room for a dagger draw first. Summer Clash 2022 classes are planned according to the prior stage combat experience and education of participants. Emphasis is put on combining safety, artistic value and technique. . The workshop consists of three certification courses and four showcase courses for different levels of experiences. Besides course-specific training, days will include a common warm-up and warm-down, some days include choose-your-own-adventure type special classes with varying topics. . There’s also an advanced course that consist of training in a variety of weapons and fight performer skills. The first week will focus on the camera work and will end up in one day of filming. During the second week the focus will shift into live stage work. This week will look into historical fighting styles, highly stylized stage combat and swashbuckling. The final product of the second week will be a part of the showcase. . Did you know that the first larger gathering of stage-combat people in Nordic countries was a workshop in Linköping, Sweden 1992? Then three years later, in 1995, the Nordic Stage Fight Society was officially founded to become a society for stage combat professionals in Nordic Countries with private members from Denmark, Sweden and Norway. The first board of the society consisted of Peppe Östensson, Inga-Live Kippersund and Tina Robinson. The aim for the new-founded society was to promote safety and quality first, while also raising the artistic level of stage combat in the Nordic Region. Thus, it all began. So this year’s we are hosting the 30th anniversary summer workshop!
