As a disabled person I’m very used to doing exactly what society expects of me: trying to make others lives as easy as possible when it comes to meeting my access needs. I turn up early to everything, usually ridiculously early, especially at places like the theatre. But, when I found out it might be possible for me to make a 5:30pm show after my matinee finished at 5pm, well it became a bit of a personal goal to see whether it was possible as a wheelchair user. And so, I got out of my first theatre at 5:05pm, and raced down Shaftesbury Avenue at 6mph, weaving in and out of people. I made it to my second theatre with about 15 minutes to get inside and use the toilet, and almost fell at the final hurdle when the lift didn’t want to play ball. I finally got into the auditorium at 5:27, had the quickest wee of my life, and took my seat with just enough time to take a sip of water. Now, this isn’t something I’ll be doing every week, but it’s really opened my eyes to how much I restrict my life to make it easier for others. Non-disabled people are allowed to be late or turn up with 2 minutes to spare, but it’s never something I’ve allowed myself to do before. As a stay at home and theater mom, I always had a dream of volunteering my time to the arts A non profit organization. I can now say I feel beyond excited to finally show some of my talents and passions to the arts. I was given this opportunity to bring home wigs and wash and give back. But I knew I can style them back to character. It takes a-lot of time but the results are amazing and I can’t be any happier! Lily is homeschooled so she’s been helping me wash and untangle wigs. I’m so happy she’s able to also give her time to CAT! We are so grateful for our theater community. We will busy this spring and summer washing and styling wigs back to character getting ready for future shows! We’re so (EXCITED)! reviews... 🎭 Strapped 📍 The Island 🗓️ 16/04/24 Leo Russell stands out as a particularly impressionable name: debuting his farcical satire of patriotism 'The Lovely Lovely English' last year, Russell has a knack for penning challenging political pieces through unique pieces and with Strapped, he turns to a brilliantly unique concoction of drag cabaret and crime thriller to explore knife crime, queer culture and class. The slightly bizarre contrast brilliantly highlights the plays most compelling focus - after the homophobic murder of a young boy, the LGBT community aspire to use his passing as a motive for social justice, while his family wish for privacy. It's a challenging conflict; neither side is entirely right nor wrong, and both are written and performed in an empathetically charged way that makes for a thoroughly engaging and difficult debate. The first act sees a gripping back and forth between the residents of the gay bar (with @matthew.j.s.hill giving a moving performance as a wearied activist with a fierce drag queen persona) and a council state, home to the grieving Cassidy family. It's here where we meet Eliza Cassidy - played exceptionally by @louisamarshalll . Marshall, alongside @lilygracerobbo as Bianca Beaufleur deliver intense, volatile and truly exceptional performances, and entirely ignite the stage whenever present. A later scene between the two makes for one of the most thrilling moments of characterisation I've seen this year, the pair crafting an adrenaline-filled struggle of power dynamics. This, however, is one of the few positive moments to be found in the second act, which in an attempt to resolve the plot loses all momentum. Convoluted speeches, unnecessary songs and a tonally disjointed conclusion in which everyone lives 'happily ever after' brought a disappointing subversion to what was leading to an explosive cumulation of tensions and violence. There's a genuine piece of theatrical brilliance to be found in the first act that with some work, could be a urgent and impressive play; lose the interval and second hour, and Strapped could strongly rival some of the best playwriting in new theatre currently on offer.
