It's World Animal Day! 🐐🐐🐐 That's a perfect time for another warm up exercise. 🐐🐐Animal Understudy Description Two people play a scene based on a suggestion from the audience. Whenever the host shouts “understudy” two other actors rush in to be their understudies, but the understudies are animals instead of humans. 😮 It's warm up time again! This is great for raising energy if your students are in a slump. Circle of Extraordinary Coincidences Description: Have one person do an abstract sound and motion. As soon as they do, another person goes over to them and joins in. Someone else initiates a different abstract sound and motion and a second person joins them. As soon as this starts, the first creation stops. This way, lots of strange duos pop up around the room. 😮😮Now ask more people to join in with each one; two, then three until everyone is jumping on each new idea. When you like the sound of one, pause the game and stay on that group doing a sound and motion, ask them what the sound would be if it was a word. See if they can add another short sentence to define who they are and what’s happening. Try a bunch of these. Teaching Purpose It helps people be aware that you don’t have to go in with an idea, you can just build on the energy and emotion that exists. The director shouts out something like “volcano”. By the count of 5 everyone has to become that thing, as a group. They then break away and carry on walking around, until the director shouts a new thing. The director shouts out something and counts to 5 and everyone has to physically form that thing with each other before the director gets to 5. For instance “Volcano, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5! When preparing a performance piece, whether it is a poem, song or piece of prose, part of the rehearsal process is to warm up. Even when practising at home we should *flex our drama muscles* before rehearsing the performance piece itself. We can start with warm-up exercises for the voice and body. Warm-ups require practise and repetition, in the same way athletes train and do practise drills to get match fit. Vocal strength and good breathing techniques are all about muscle memory, just like going to the gym. And just like going to the gym, if we fail to warm up correctly, we can run the risk of causing injury to the muscles we engage for voice production. HERE'S ANOTHER QUICK WARM-UP TO GET YOUR STUDENTS READY! This game is called Wax Museum. It takes nothing but an open space. Someone is "it" or the detective. "It" closes his eyes and counts to ten. The group scatters and freeze in an unusual position like a statue but one they can hold for several minutes. "It" opens his eyes and moves about the room looking over the statues while paying attention to the movement which may or may not be going on around him. When a statue thinks it is safe to change positions without being noticed by It, they do so. I coach the group to make small movements which are more difficult to detect. When "It" sees someone move, they are out of the game for the time being. The game continues until everyone has been put out. After my students understand the game, I coach them on positions they could use which are subtle and less likely to be noticed--turning one's head from one direction to another, putting out a foot, bending forward, etc. �You can take it farther, by coaching the group to find a partner and change your position in tandem. For instance, maybe Person A has been standing with her arms up and Person B is in a lunge. They join together quickly and become one statue. I say that still counts! . WAS THIS HELPFUL?
