The Northumberland County Show attracts up to 30,000 people to the showground at Bywell, near Stocksfield, and organisers and visitors alike will be hoping for good weather for the third year on the trot. St Helen’s Church, Whitley Chapel in Hexhamshire, Northumberland. The 18th century church replaced an earlier building of which a little survives in the east window. It is small but perfectly formed, its simplicity being the source of its appeal. After a long Easter break we have been catching up on site progress and with current para 84 projects, new para 84 projects and a beautiful new grade II Listed conversion and refurbishment scheme. The site in Hexham is making good progress now the better weather has arrived with @sips_clays and the lovely bricks from @mcgovernbricks and @tbsbrick with the stone detailing from @huttonstonecoltd going up too….there is a lot more dressed stone to follow and it’s going to look mega! 🍻BLACK STORM🍻 Last night I was kindly invited too the @microbusgateshead to try the new NE IPA brewed by @blackstormbeer and what a bloody treat it was 😍 Peace Frog, named after a Doors song, is a fruity, punchy delightful IPA and goes down surprisingly well at 6% a pint! I promised myself I was only going to have 1, but here I am with a sore head, after having a few more half’s. 😅 I just couldn’t resist! I’m not a massive IPA drinker but this one was delicious! All of Black Storms drinks are named after songs, they’ve been open for a year and have some exciting new developments coming up! I head back today from my wonderful journey. I leave with memories and adventures (some include flat tires) and new friends. I began my travel with a group of like-minded photographers. Spectacular viewpoints overlook Northumberland’s wild scenery and lichen-clad trees showcase their ever-changing colours throughout the year. Planted around the jutting sandstone escarpments of Thrunton Crag to the north and Long Crag and Coe Crag to the south, trails weave and cut through the forests, breaking out into open moorland with striking views across the Whittingham Vale and the Cheviot Hills. Head to the prehistoric fort, Castle Hill, before visiting the hand-hewn cave and one-time solitary retreat of Macartney, a 19th century monk from nearby Callaly. Mischievous hobgoblins are fabled to dwell here and play tricks on passers by, and you can walk stony gully of Hob’s Nick, named after impish hobgoblins. Just north of the chocolate box village of Etal are the Duddo Stones, aka the Duddo Five Stones, an early Bronze Age stone circle (once 7 stones) . The stones are sandstone and now bear deep fissures from weathering. Drive to Duddo and follow the sign to the stone circle, park near the gate at ///summer.unwell.slung , on the grass verge and as snug to the hedge as is feasible to allow passing for farm machinery. There is a permissive path, which runs the length of three fields, stick to the path and keep dogs on leads. It is a very straight route with a view to the stones opening up before you, currently planted to wheat or barley? I look forward to visiting later in the year and seeing the view through fields of golden cereal. Once arrived, you’ll get 360 views across open countryside to the Cheviot hills to the South and the Lammermuir hills North. Although positioned on a small hill, it’s an easy walk for anyone with reasonable mobility and fitness, approximately 3/4 mile in each direction. 30 minutes drive from the Nook, combine with visits to: Berwick, the Union Chain Bridge, Paxton House, Chain Bridge Honey Farm, Norham, Chillingham castle and cattle or the various attractions of the Ford and Etal estates. If you’re looking for a pub stop off while out and about you could try : the Fishers Arms, Horncliffe; the Black Bull, Etal; the Black Bull, Lowick; the Percy Arms, Chatton.
