After Kayla’s birthday post yesterday I listened to most of the Dress the Dead catalogue on my way home from Forbidden’s rehearsal. Gawdammmit if those songs aren’t powerful and well written! Sometimes it takes the distance to appreciate things more and put them in proper perspective. I loved helping create every single thing we did along that path. From Dolving to Dixon & Delay to Rowan. With Walker & Hernandez for the entire duration. These folks are all special musicians and people. It always seemed like the industry’s perception was our only obstacle. That certainly is partly true. Another reality is that not all 5 of us could commit to what it takes to truly work a project. Life is life and we all have different commitments. We never broke up. That would be a foolish thing to proclaim. However we are on an extended hiatus while we all do our own things. Obviously I’m very busy and happy re-igniting my legacy with Forbidden. The Universe spoke and I listened. If and when DtD does make any kind of return, some pieces may be different. Time will tell. All this being said, I implore you to check out the DtD songs we’d released on all streaming platforms over the years. It’s a lot heavier and more powerful than many of you assumed it was. In fact, it’ll kick you in the teeth! I’m proud of our work and I love these people. #dressthedead

While the Ace Frehley “performance” a couple of days ago left A LOT to be desired, the hang with some great peeps won out. Rob Cavestany and Gus Pepa from Death Angel in the first pic. Harald O, Bryan Kehoe, Snake & our pal Brian D’Andrea in the other. Every time I see Gus and Rob together I get flashbacks to the world tour Death Angel & Forbidden did together in 1990. We did so much back in those days. People forget or they didn’t know, but Death Angel & Forbidden were in line to be the next thing way back then. For DA, the RV accident they got in derailed they’re plans to be the opening act on the Clash of the Titans tour with Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax. Instead Alice In Chains got their big break. That same time Forbidden was about to sign a pretty massive deal with RCA records. As we were finishing negotiations, Paul Bostaph got the offer to play in Slayer. He obviously took that gig. Who wouldn’t!?! The world’s taste in heavy music took a dramatic turn exactly then. Smells Like Teen Spirit dropped the same week. The deal evaporated over night and we were left to wither in the darkest days of metal with most everyone else. The rest is history. Both DA & Forbidden got marginalized like almost every single thrash band that wasn’t fully established. When I see Rob, I see a warrior. A survivor. A man who has passion that locks in like a pit bull’s bite. DA is STILL killing it and are the best live band from our era that have continued. No argument. When I see Gus & Rob together, I have the fondest of memories. I love my friends very much. Having these great memories attached to them is a beautiful thing. I can’t thank Chris Cannella & Dean guitars enough for all of their support over the last 15+ years. They’ve supplied me with some of the best instruments I’ve ever owned or played. In the first picture is a transparent red arch-top ML that I’ve been playing religiously since 2010. Out of every ML I’ve owned, this one is the most special. It was my main guitar used on Forbidden’s Omega Wave tours for all the songs from the record. Since then it’s been my go-to metal companion. As of late I’ve been consistently tuning it back to E standard and it sounds & plays amazing and handles perfectly. I’m back in love with this guitar. I used it for 90% of the BAI set on Sunday. The second one is the USA custom orange sparkle ML that Joshua Malony had built for me back in 2014. It’s by far the heaviest guitar I’ve ever played at almost 18 lbs! Mahogany body and ebony fret board, it is a tone beast! I only used it once for the show during the opening song in drop D. SOD’s March of the SOD into Sergeant D and the SOD. It pummels with midrange wallop! Both guitars have the same pickup combination of Dean custom shop DMT’s. Michael Amott Tyrants on the bridge and Michael Schenker customs on the neck. The only other pickups I use other than Fishman Classics. The 3rd guitar (help by my Brother Sleize E Smith) is one of two MDX black satins donated by Dean for our Cliff Burton / Paul Baloff costume contests. Every single player involved in Saturday’s show signed it for the winners. I’m loyal to Dean guitars, and they have been good to me.
