Death - Spiritual Healing At some point after the recording of Leprosy, Terry Butler joined Death as the bassist of the band. After Death toured to promote Leprosy in 1988, Rick Rozz was fired from the band & he re-joined Massacre (which has an ex-member of Death, Kam Lee on vocals) in 1989. James Murphy (who would later play in Obituary, Cancer & Testament) replaced Rick on guitars. Death went back to Morrisound Studios to record Spiritual Healing, which was released as their third album in 1990. The production on Spiritual Healing is almost identical Leprosy, with the exception of the snare having less reverb to it & Chuck's vocals seem to have a certain effect on them, but its nothing too distracting anyway. Apart from that, his vocals are a bit lower pitched & the instrumentation on Spiritual Healing takes a mid-paced approach, while showing hints of technicality in some of the riffs & soloing as well as a little presence of odd time signatures. Speaking of the guitar solos, they are more melodic thanks to James Murphy's guitar playing style. He also shines on songs like Within the Mind, which has a hypnotic riff at the beginning of the song & he even traded off solos with Chuck in Low Life, which is one of the most memorable moments from this album. Lyrical themes has also went through a change, from being gory, horror-themed to socially aware ones such as drug addiction, mental disorders & faith healers, where the latter three is the theme of the title track's lyrics. A thrashy, chuggy riff from Legion of Doom was reused during the chorus of the song & a short, faint keyboards (which was played by Eric Greif) can be heard in the background after the chorus of the song. To be honest, I feel like Spiritual Healing doesn't get enough love from fans, probably due to it being not as fast as Leprosy, along with the change in lyrical themes as well as the fact that Spiritual Healing is a transitional album containing technical elements that Death would fully explore on Human, which is considered as one of the most defining albums in techdeath.
All right, let’s step back in time again. I advised in my last post, that I had seen the god-like metal band Death once before their Sept 1990 Toronto gig at the Apocalypse Club. Well, it’s true, just 5 months earlier they had rolled through town. Here as proof, from my personal collection, is my ticket to their March 1990 gig at the Siboney. Ah the Siboney, of all the venues to ever exist, it was definitely one of them. This sketchy dive bar (and I say that lovingly) hosted a lot of cool heavy shows back in the day (Nuclear Assault, Sacrifice, etc.). It was located in Toronto’s Kensington Market, perched with the utmost prestige, and I kid you not, right above a smelly seafood shop (Lobster Island). We had some cool opening bands here, Devastation from Texas, local boys Overthrow (from Scarborough) and Mortal Annoyance (from Burlington). There is some great footage from this show on youtube, just search on “death live Toronto 1990” and you’ll find it. Já os produtores musicais falavam a mesma língua: “Se você tem de 2 a 3 milhões para torrar em um ano, tudo bem”. Diante de pessimismo como estes disse para mim mesmo: “Deixa comigo”. E o louco, em menos de um ano conseguiu “subir” mais de 170 músicas autorais nas plataformas de streaming, como Spotify, Dezeer, Amazon, Appe e outras cerca de 40 espalhando o meu som em cerca de 180 países (vai dar Guinness Book). Para que isso acontecesse fiz o que imaginava ser o melhor, além de acordar às 7 da manhã e dormir às 3 da matina. Busquei um maestro genial; técnicos e engenheiros de som de primeira linha; um estúdio TOP disponível 24 horas por dia; cinco músicos que valem por uma pequena orquestra; e meia dúzias de pessoas amigas (loucas) que chegaram a largar empregos bem-sucedidos para embarcar nessa loucura que quebrou paradigmas e, claro, como jornalista essa história será contada em livro-reportagem. QUEM É IVAN 2X ? Ivan 2X, nome artístico de Ivan Lopes da Silva (Chapecó - SC, 15 de março de 1957). Artista de vocação e jornalista de atuação, IVAN 2X, por razões de sobrevivência financeira, com pouco mais de 20 anos, casado e pai de dois filhos, em 1980 iniciou a carreira profissional trabalhando em assessoria política, em Florianópolis (SC). Foram mais de 30 anos nessa função, onde a veia artística ficou limitada nas centenas de poesias e letras musicais escritas em horas vagas. Mas a parte musical, propriamente dita, ficou registrada em mais de 100 jingles produzidos para campanhas eleitorais para candidatos a prefeitos, deputados, senadores e governadores, o que possibilitou conhecer um pouco sobre as técnicas de estúdios de gravações. Em 2019 resolveu se afastar totalmente das assessorias políticas e planejou se mudar para Portugal no ano seguinte e passar pelo menos uma temporada de seis meses em Lisboa, para decidir se permaneceria residindo na Europa. Look at the supporting acts, Carcass and Pestilence. That would have been insane, but sadly that’s not who we got. The actual support acts ended up being Gorguts and Oblivion. Still awesome, but not Carcass awesome. This gig was at the now long defunct Apocalypse Club (basically a basement). One of the smallest, filthiest, grimiest venues to ever exist…. God I miss it. Q - Musically, would you describe it as “Leprosy” part ll. If not, did you find it difficult to top it? CHUCK - DEATH is a band that will keep getting better with each record. Rick was a piece of sh*t on “Leprosy” and really ruined what we were trying to do. It was a great record, but I am into musicianship, not noise makers. With Rick out of the band I knew we could do what we wanted to do, and with James in the band we had no worries. It is a great relief. I really love the Morbid Magazines and the editorial of them.
