The Rise of L.A. streetwear brand Sake World and how the Death of Jack Pheonix birthed a young rapper’s career. Back in the mid-2010’s a group of tight-knit teens on the West Coast shared a love for rap music, clothing, and art. Sake World was a brand created by 15-year-old artist Jack Pheonix. Living in Los Angeles, Jack was surrounded by other young talent and like-minded creatives who supported his movement “Sake.” In November of 2015, Jack unfortunately passed away. He was crossing the street when a stolen vehicle being chased by police struck Jack and killed him instantly. His father recognized his son’s artistic talents and decided to continue on his legacy by sustaining the Sake World name, soon after opening up a store on La Brea Avenue in Los Angeles. Again, Jack encompassed himself with a group of like-minded creatives. Some popular names are, Dsavage, Playboi Carti, Tyler The Creator, and John Ross. All of them being interested in fashion and music, they built off one another because of their similar creative dreams, developing their passions into quick fame and success. Which some of the names listed couldn’t handle. One of these guys is Dsavage, who was an extremely close friend to Jack. When he passed, Savage and his friends took this as an opportunity to work with the brand and push Sake World while he started to take his rap career more seriously. Having such a strong network in the scene and many recognizing Jack’s talents, Sake World was able to create its brand image through rap music. Hosting concerts and events at the store, including artists like Wiz Khalifa, Famous Dex, Yung Bans and even Chief Keef. Dsavage was also one of the biggest up-and-coming rappers in L.A. at this time and made himself the face of the brand. Making his fans both supporters of him and Sake World by mentioning the name in his music and wearing Sake merchandise. A good majority of popular rappers in today’s age know about Sake World. Many of them could say they have been to the La Brea store or even performed there. As a huge fan of Dsavage, this story demonstrates how Streetwear on the West Coast has helped birth some popular rapper’s careers.
