Another show and tell! Just received this KKS (Kuroda) UFB-3 boring head from Japan. Basically identical to a Wohlhaupter UPA-3, just made in Japan and in a steel box instead of a wooden one. The only thing missing is the long tool holder and the middle one is damaged. Besides those little things (that I will be on the lookout for to replace), this looks basically brand new! Not bad for <€200 including taxes and delivery from Japan… Will be used in an ongoing project as soon as I receive the MT4 to MT3 reduction taper that I need to be able to fit this in my mill. Got a free indicator stand a while ago. The magbase was beyond repair, but I thought it would be fun to disassemble the arm and try to get it back to working condition. I could not resist doing some knolling to get this nice view of where all the parts should go. (After going through the ultrasonic twice.) Quite fun to see how one of these works! The Schmidt press gets a brother! Not sure what this press was originally for, or even who made it. With its lapped base, it looks almost like a comparator stand. The ram has just about 20 microns of side to side movement in it, when it is extended all the way down. The steel block on the bench behind it was attached to the ram when I got it, but that is almost certainly not original (just a piece of cold rolled steel with two holes in it). Took apart the deckel spindle. I already restored the spindle itself so now the other parts are being restored. There was a lot of grease in the old bearing (should be oil lubricated) and the nut with the 4 holes in it was all mangled up. So i took a light cut off in the lathe. Found this very nice Burnerd Multisize collet chuck with 6 collets, in a really nice stand. I was expecting to have to mount it on a backplate for my lathe, but guess what? New machine day! WDS SB-1M EDM drill. I’ve always been fascinated with EDM and I could not pass up the opportunity to buy this machine at this price. Almost everything on this machine is either stainless or plated. It cleans up really nice and shiny! And it does need cleaning. It was not used often, but the shop where I bought it from had it in the grinding room… Now, it would not be me if I bought a perfect and complete machine, of course, so what is wrong with this one? No collets to hold electrodes. Well, technically there is 1 broken collet… I have plans, though. i had to make a BT30 arbor for the D'andrea Testarossa boring head. I found myself a monochromatic light source to use with my optical flat in an unusual place. An Osram Duko 50 darkroom lamp contains a sodium vapor lamp! Now, not many people use darkrooms any more, so I was able to pick up an 18W version for a good price. Ideally I would want one a little more powerful, but this works! This little @hbmmachines grinding vise is nice and square/parallel, but really difficult to use. Earlier this week I took out the nut and I discovered why. I have no idea how they managed this, but it made it really hard to seat the nut in a slot in the bottom when tightening the vise. Tonights little project was to make a new nut. I recently bought a Bego Corba laser welding machine. It's was a big risk to buy it because it was not working and it gave some errors. The machine is relatively old, and parts are hard to find. Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. But this is the only chance for me to affort something like this. And I took the risk. After some testing, I got it working again. I still need to repair a few things and replace the two laser lamps. That is not your everyday repair job, but luckily, my retired dad has worked with lasers and has replaced these lamps in the past. Together we can fix this. Welding spot can be as small as 0.3mm, and max 2mm. Another benefit is that you can weld some difficult materials and dissimilar metals together. And there is very little heat input, so there is no distortion. And it can be used with or without shielding gass because there is little time for oxidation. This machine is use a lot for making dental prostheses but also uses by goldsmiths, watchmaker repairs and small tool and die repairs. The Mitutoyo Linear Height 600! I just could not help myself when I saw this pop up for sale. I was actually looking for a smaller height gauge, more fitting for my 60x40 surface plate that could also be moved to a machine if required, but this thing was just so cool… It came incomplete, without any probes, so I had to make the ball probe myself. According to the manual, the standard probe is a 10mm ball: I held the ball in a 10mm collet and turned an 8mm flat spot (cost me 2 inserts...). Then drilled a 5mm hole using a carbide drill bit. The shaft was very simple and they are press-fit together with some loctite. Measuring some gauge blocks and comparing with my digital micrometers, they agree on all of them, except the LH600 has one extra digit of resolution. (I was cheating a little bit with this 30mm one, it is actually 1.5 micron oversize, but resting my finger on the height gauge ‘compensated’ for that...) Fixing my favorite chair! The back of the chair is connected to the base via rubber blocks, glued to the wooden shells. These are screwed to the armrests. For the second time, the glue let go and (this time) dropped my dad on his back behind the chair. So much quicker for some quick threading and less scary, with a lathe without a brake and a broken reverse switch… I do need to get some better threading dies, because this M8 was impossible to do without undercutting the stock to ~7,3mm. Many burrs as well. Don't look at the little notebook and strap clamp holding the scale to the saddle. I got this really nice Michilin PA555 angle dresser for the surface grinder via an auction, for really quite cheap. I didn’t really set out to buy it, but now that I have it, I really like it! Gives me some extra capabilities I didn’t have before. Now, when I wanted to use it, something went wrong with the surface grinder. A friend of my brother wanted heavier weight for under his sports gun for at the shooting range and the manufacturer does not sell them any more. One of the other guys at the range was kind enough to lend me his weight and I was able to copy it almost 1-1. There is a 1 gram difference between the original and my copy. I started on the lathe, turning the 22mm radius, then flattening both sides on the surface grinder (overkill, but hey I have the machine…), then sawed the part in half, milled it to height, milled in the dovetail, finished the ends (one side at a 14 degree angle), drilled the hole for the set screw and sawed the slot (two setups, I thought of a better one half way through). Then some finishing and blackening. I think it turned out really well! I received this wonderful gift from Mark Presling @preso58 all the way from down under 🇦🇺. I sent Mark some endmills at the end of last year as a surprise gift, without expecting something in return. But he decided to make a gift for me. And what a wonderful gift it is!!! I'm really impressed how he made my logo because I didn't share a digital file to copy it. And it's spot on, also with the colors. And the multiple color powdercoating is something I haven't seen before. I wonder how he made it. He wrote that he would share a video about the process on his YouTube channel after i received it. I think this is the most beautiful handmade present someone ever gave me. Most times, I make gifts for others, and it's rare for me to receive something that someone else made. This is intended to assist in the lathe or milling machine by pressing and keeping a tap straight. This tap follower presses on the rear end of the tap. New grinding wheels! And a little prototyping on my horizontal bandsaw, turning it into a vertical one. This works surprisingly well, except that the center of gravity is too far back and it wants to tip over backwards. But that is an easy fix. My first attempt to scraping to me this doesn’t look bad. When I started scraping a little finer a low spot became visible so have to scrape that out. I bought this measuring plate for practice it was machined flat with a shaper but when I measured and blued it for the first time it was very clear it wasn’t flat anymore. Today’s job was to make sure that the FR1 mill would not slide off the cart when pushing it around the shop. I think this solution will work fine. I made a drill guide and some pins/screws from some threaded rod I had laying around. The pin ends of the screws drop into the top of the cart and are a nice loose fit (9.8mm into 10mm holes. Now the mill does not rock or move on the cart and it won’t slide off. First pic shows my entire ‘collection’ of AI Hembrug machines. I found this Schaublin rotating vice a few days ago. Perfect combination with my Schaublin 13 mill. I was looking to buy one for a long time. Sometimes you just have to be patient. [For 🇬🇧 see below] De selectorarm van mijn verdeeltafel ontbrak, dus besloot ik er zelf een te maken. Allemaal bewerkingen waarmee ik nog niet veel ervaring heb, dus dit was best een uitdaging. Ik heb een tekening gemaakt in Fusion360 op basis van een afbeelding, deze overgebracht op bronzen materiaal, met een kotterkop op de freesmachine gaten gemaakt, het grootste deel van het materiaal met een lintzaag weggehaald, met de verdeeltafel de rondingen gefreesd en een schuin kantje gemaakt voor de afwerking. Tot slot heb ik het geheel gepolijst met een polijstwiel. These operations were quite challenging as I didn't have much experience with them. I created a drawing in Fusion360 based on an image, sketched it onto bronze material, used a boring head on the milling machine for the holes, cut most of the material with a bandsaw, used the dividing table for milling the curves, and added a chamfer for finishing. Fixing yesterday’s mistakes. I realized the bottom and sides were not squared to the dovetail when I ground the top of my new tool holder yesterday. Fixed that today. I have been working on the AI Hembrug quickchange toolpost again. Little light surface grinding, some chamfers. I also made a start on an extra tool holder. Next up are some new bolts, because two of the bolts that are on it now really are an eyesore… One little annoyance: the dovetails are 50 degrees! Took a while to get a 50 degree dovetail cutter. It is HSS, though. So lets see how many holders I can make before it is dull. A set of Swiss BANI 6 jaw chucks! I bought these many years ago when I wanted to make bezels for watches, but they didn’t really work for that. They have been in a drawer ever since. They do fit nicely on the Hembrug lathe, though. One of them has a 13mm arbor on the back and the other 12mm. I think one might have been turned down in the past? This one also has quite a bit of runout (.5mm), whole the other is within .01mm. Finished the magnetic chuck! For now, at least. I faced it off, but I think I need to do that again after I finish scraping the slides. I turned a bit of a dish in it… I could not resist lapping it a little with some 600 paper on after facing, so the finish turned out really shiny! It does have its place on the wall with the other chucks. The shaft was broken, and now this bushing clamps onto the remaining piece of the shaft, allowing the electric drive to be reattached. It's my first project that required the dividing table.
