I’m super happy to be on the down hill slide with my Rotex stand project. I don’t work with tube much so fitment took time but paper patterns were definitely my friend. I also haven’t ran beads with my mig in a very long time, especially not on tube but overall it turned out decent enough to not fall apart. Now I just need to drill and weld the cross bars to mount the Rotex to. Eventually it will get paint but not just yet. Now that I have it off my table it will be back to regular work for the week. I finally have a working Oscillating Spindle Sander. I have wanted one of these for a very long time and they rarely come up for sale in my area. I bought this in September of last year and it has been behind a bunch of other stuff since then. I unburied it a couple months ago and did a light rehab to make it operational. This is a State B-4 sander with the older style spindles (no posi-lock feature). - I think it is from the 1950s. - 230V 3 phase motor being fed by a VFD since I live in a residential neighborhood. - I am using the original contactor switch to control the FWD input on the VFD because I like the "clunk" it makes. - I am missing the 1" rubber drum and the 3/4" spindle. I will replace those at some point. - I spent a good hour with some simple green and a scrubber to make it look all snazzy. - All the old oil was poured out and fresh stuff poured in. - The underside of the base was surprisingly rusty since there was no rust anywhere else. A wire wheel made quick work of that and then some CRC Rust Converter primer makes it look very snazzy. - I completely redid the wooden ring that holds all the spindles. I made it a bit bigger so the spindles can sit straight up (opposed to leaning outwards like the original one), include room for the three throat plates, and have a lower area for the VFD. I also added 3D printed spindle holders. The wife called this wooden part the sander's toilet set. It is also designed in 3D cad and was laser cut. - I made a mobile base using some scrap 3/4" plywood, 2x2 angle iron, and a set of 3" total lock casters. I can easily move the sander around the garage and then lock the casters to make it stay in one spot. This base made the sander about 6" taller. Det gamla fanéret som gick att rädda limmades på nytt med fisklim då det gamla kaseinlimmet blivit vattenskadat. I picked up this old Edwards No. 15 shear a couple weeks ago. I have been looking for an Edwards locally for a while now, this one was only about 40 miles away. Today I welded up a stand for it out of scrap steel I had laying around. The top is an old steel (not cast) drain plate scrapped from the industrial plant where I work. There was no handle included with the shear so I made a temporary one, but I plan to make a better fitting handle. I did the math, the stand tips the scales at about 150 lbs, give or take a few. I need to add more weight at the front and adjust the placement of the shear; I can tip it back when shearing heavy bar and I don't want to bolt it to my floor. I can't find any data or information regarding Dat of manufacture, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was Pre-WWII. The jaws have a few chips, but still cut pretty decent. Picked up a pair of old centre finders today. One is a Moore & Wright no. 825 B, the other unnamed and possibly hand made. Mostly useful for marking the centre of a shaft for a hand drilled centre hole, so it can be mounted in a lathe and an area to be turned for a steady to run on. The centre hole has to be re-cut after of course as a wonky centre will cause problems later. Grinding a roller bearing diameter on a LandCruiser gearbox shaft. The old surface was fretting and slightly undersize so it was electroplated with nickel-cobalt (around 52HRC) and ground back to size. The Stanley 55 is a woodworking tool that would surely make any machinist happy. I’m over here figuring this one out and it’s currently set up with a “106 Grecian Ogee” cutter. I spent 30 minutes sharpening this one cutter (it came with 39 cutters 😳) One thing is for sure as I learn to operate this voodoo demon from the past: A decent knowledge of exactly how a plane functions is needed to set one of these up, there are adjustments everywhere and each one is very cleverly engineered. The people that designed and made these tools were on another level and the attention to detail is like nothing else.
