The United Kingdom’s King Charles III will shortly return to public-facing duties, following his recent treatment for cancer. Buckingham Palace made the announcement Friday evening. In a statement, the palace said the king and Queen Camilla will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment center next Tuesday, where they will meet patients and medical specialists. The visit will be the first in a number of external engagements the king will undertake in the coming weeks. Additionally, the king and queen will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit in June, at the request of the UK government. The statement added, “As the first anniversary of The Coronation approaches, Their Majesties remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year.” The palace announced early in February that the king had been diagnosed with an unspecified form of cancer and would be stepping back from public engagements, while continuing with his private work as the monarch.

S House Representative Maxine Waters, a top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, has indicated that the final version of the stablecoin bill could be ready soon. In an interview with Bloomberg, Waters expressed optimism about the progress made towards getting the bill in the short run. This is a significant development, considering Waters had previously criticised a version of the same bill. Waters now emphasises the importance of protecting investors and ensuring that cryptocurrency known as stablecoins have proper backing. This focus on investor protection underscores the need for robust regulation in the rapidly growing market. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives have seen an acceleration in the movement towards a legislation in the past few weeks. Waters mentioned that the US Federal Reserve, the Treasury Department, and the White House have all had input in shaping the bill, underscoring the extensive collaboration involved. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Friday, the last day of his China tour. ⁣ ⁣ According to Chinese state broadcaster CCTV, Xi told Blinken the two countries “should be partners, not rivals.” ⁣ ⁣ “There are still a number of issues that need to be resolved, and there is still room for further efforts,” CCTV cited the Chinese leader as having told Blinken. ⁣ ⁣ Blinken’s talks with Xi followed a 5.5-hour discussion with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to address several contentious topics as well as efforts to continue improving bilateral relations.   ⁣ ⁣ Prior to the talks in Beijing, Wang asked: “Should China and the United States keep to the right direction of moving forward with stability, or return to a downward spiral?”   ⁣   ⁣ At the end of the meeting, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Blinken discussed concerns about the “PRC (People’s Republic of China) support to the Russian defense industrial base” as well as Taiwan, the South China Sea and the situation in Middle East.   ⁣   ⁣ The foreign minister stated that differences between the countries persist and continue to grow, making talks more difficult. But Wang also said ties between the two countries were “beginning to stabilize.”   ⁣   ⁣ China’s determination to assert its disputed sovereignty over the entirety of the South China Sea has sparked numerous tensions with its neighbors, including countries that are allies of the US.  ⁣   ⁣ Wang outlined, without being specific, Chinese complaints about US policies in the South China Sea and Taiwan, saying: “China’s legitimate development rights have been unreasonably suppressed and our core interests are facing challenges.”   ⁣   ⁣ Blinken responded that the Biden administration placed a premium on US-China dialogue even on issues of dispute. He said there had been some progress in relations in the past year, but added that talks would continue to be difficult.   ⁣   ⁣ The meeting between the top diplomats followed a summit in November when US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in San Francisco.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday called for the establishment of a "more united, sovereign and democratic" Europe in the face of numerous geopolitical and economic challenges. In the speech lasting nearly two hours at Paris' Sorbonne University, he warned that military, economic and other pressures could weaken and fragment the 27-nation EU. "We need to be clear on the fact that our Europe is mortal — it can die," Macron said. He said the bloc's survival "depends only on our choices." He warned that "the rules of the game" had changed and the EU was not "armed against the risks we face." "We are still too slow and not ambitious enough," he said, calling for a "powerful Europe." The French president has long called for the European Union to assert itself as a cohesive geopolitical bloc in the face of rivalry with the United States and China and is a strong supporter of Brussels' stated policy of achieving "strategic autonomy." The speech won a positive response from Macron's main EU partner, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, with whom he has often clashed on defence and trade issues. "France and Germany want Europe to be strong," Scholz said in a post. "Your speech contains good ideas on how we can achieve this." 🔗For more on Macron's speech, tap the link in our bio.

German Development Minister Svenja Schulze on Thursday called for greater contributions from the world's richest people to protect the environment. "Billionaires have the greatest CO2 footprint but still contribute far too little to the solution," Schulze said ahead of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue in Berlin. The German minister expressed her support for the Brazilian proposal to tax the superrich to help pay for projects necessary to tackle the threats of global warming. Schulze called for "record-breaking efforts for global climate protection" as diplomats met in the German capital to take part in the two-day summit that includes German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock. The aim of the dialogue is mainly to prepare for this year's COP climate meeting in the Azerbaijani capital Baku. "The diagnosis is clear," Schulze said. "Public funds alone will never be enough to cover the needs for climate investments. "At the same time, there is enough wealth and money in the world. That's why the initiative by the Brazilian G20 presidency to finally tax the global superrich fairly is so important," she added. The minister, a member of Scholz's Social Democratic Party, stressed that progress has already been made. She noted the World Bank has been able to secure an additional $70 billion (€65 billion) in investments over the next years for climate protection and other global challenges.

ikTok has suspended its rewards functions in TikTok Lite, a new app catering to regions with slower internet speeds. This decision follows concerns raised by the European Commission regarding the app’s ‘Task and Reward Program,’ which incentivises user engagement with rewards like Amazon vouchers and PayPal gift cards. Particularly, worries over potential addictive effects, especially for children, due to inadequate age verification mechanisms have been highlighted by the EU executive. In response to the Commission’s apprehensions, TikTok stated its commitment to engaging constructively with regulators and suspended the rewards functions. However, Commissioner Thierry Breton emphasised that concerns regarding TikTok’s platform addictiveness persist, along with an ongoing investigation to determine TikTok Lite’s compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA, which came into force recently, imposes regulations on how online platforms handle illegal and harmful content, with TikTok falling under its jurisdiction as a very large online platform (VLOP). The US administration is reviewing the risks associated with China’s use of RISC-V chip technology, which has become an essential instrument for Chinese companies and government institutions aiming to compete with US technology in semiconductor design. Pronounced ‘risk five,’ open-source RISC-V competes directly with Arm, a proprietary technology developed by Arm Holdings, a leading UK-based semiconductor and software design firm. RISC-V can be used in many applications, from smartphone processors to the most powerful AI chips. The Senate has passed a foreign aid package that includes a bill mandating China-based company ByteDance to sell TikTok within a year or face a US ban on the platform. Having cleared both chambers of Congress, the legislation is now headed to President Joe Biden, who has committed to signing it into law. ByteDance will have an initial nine months to finalise a sale, with a possible three-month extension based on progress, though legal challenges could delay enforcement. The bill’s successful passage through the Senate was achieved through strategic manoeuvring in the House, where it was included in a high-priority foreign aid package. This move compelled the Senate to address the TikTok issue earlier than anticipated. By extending the divestment timeline, more support was garnered in the Senate, resulting in a vote of 79-18 in favour of the bill. For more visit 📲 𝗱𝗶𝗴.𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 #dwobservatory #dwnews #digwatch

The US government has taken decisive action against alleged Iranian cyber attackers, announcing criminal charges and sanctions targeting four individuals and two companies involved in a multi-year cyber campaign. The US Treasury Department and the State Department revealed that the campaign targeted more than a dozen American companies, including defence contractors and entities with access to classified information. According to federal prosecutors in Manhattan, the corporate targets primarily comprised defence contractors, a New York-based accounting firm, and a hospitality company. The defendants allegedly employed sophisticated tactics such as spearfishing, infecting computers with malware by deceiving email recipients, and impersonating women to gain trust. Organisators of the demonstrations confirmed that Google has fired an additional 20 employees in response to protests over its cloud-computing contract with the Israeli government. This brings the total number of terminated workers to 50. The group leading the protests, ‘No Tech for Apartheid’, expressed concern that some fired employees were bystanders rather than active participants in the protests, labelling the mass firings as retaliatory. Confirming the terminations, a Google spokesperson stated that an investigation into disruptions during the protests on 16 April had concluded. The spokesperson emphasised that all dismissed employees were directly involved in disruptive activities within the company’s premises. In response, the worker group vowed to continue their activism within Google, denouncing the company’s actions as an attempt to suppress dissent. Police in Germany have arrested a member of staff working for the German far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on suspicion of spying for China. In January, the suspect, named as Jian G., is said to have repeatedly passed on information about negotiations and decisions in the European Parliament to his intelligence client. He also allegedly spied on Chinese opposition figures in Germany for the intelligence service. The suspect is an assistant to the AfD's top candidate for the European Parliament elections, Maximilian Krah. Investigators think Jian G. may have passed information on parliamentary operations to China's Ministry of State Security. He was arrested by officials from the Saxony State Criminal Police Office in Dresden. Prosecutors said police searched apartments linked to the suspect. "He is accused of an especially severe case of working for a foreign secret service," said a prosecution statement. It is alleged that the individual has been working for Krah, a serving German member of the European Parliament, since 2019. Responding to the news, Krah said that spying for a foreign state was a "serious accusation." "I learned about the arrest of the member of my staff [...] from the press this morning," he said. "I don't have any additional information. If the allegations prove true, it will result in the immediate termination of [the suspect's] employment with me." The detention came less than 24 hours after three people were arrested for spying for China in a separate German case. For more on this story, click the link in our bio.

Critics are voicing strong opposition to the UK’s proposed Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI), particularly its provisions regarding bank account monitoring for benefit recipients and changes to biometric data oversight. A cross-party group of parliamentarians has raised concerns over a proposal to grant the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) access to individuals’ bank accounts, arguing that such powers could lead to wrongful benefits suspension and intrusive scrutiny. The DPDI, currently under scrutiny in the House of Lords, faces criticism from various quarters. Last month, the Information Commissioner and numerous charities and campaign organisations criticised the bill for its lack of clarity on data collection and processing safeguards. The controversial provision to monitor benefit seekers’ bank accounts has drawn particular ire, with concerns raised about the scope and potential consequences of such surveillance. These attacks have resulted in breaches of internal networks and the theft of crucial technical data. Identified groups include Lazarus, Kimsuky, and Andariel, all linked to North Korea’s intelligence apparatus. Hackers successfully infiltrated networks using various methods, such as planting malicious codes directly into defence companies’ systems or through their contractors. The British Parliament approved a controversial plan on Monday night to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, after a marathon tussle between the upper and lower houses. The plan to send some asylum seekers to the East African country had previously faced legal challenges.⁣  ⁣ UK prime minister Rishi Sunak said the government has already chartered commercial jets that would be ready within months. “We are ready, plans are in place and these flights will go, come what may,” Sunak said at a press conference.⁣  ⁣ The bill is a response by Sunak’s government to a UK Supreme Court ruling that deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda would be in violation of international law. The bill would oblige the courts to consider it as a safe third country and give powers to UK lawmakers to ignore parts of international law as well as human rights law.⁣  ⁣ The plan to deport asylum seekers, who are fleeing conflict, poverty and increasingly extreme weather, is expected to cost the country £540 million ($665 million/€626 million) to send just the first 300 people to Rwanda.⁣  ⁣ The government has said it will stop asylum seekers from wanting to come to the UK, although it’s not clear how effective this will be. Some 120,000 people have crossed the English Channel since 2018, arriving illegally. Dozens have died.⁣  ⁣ Filippo Grandi of the UN refugee agency and UN rights commissioner Volker Türk urged the UK to “take practical measures to address irregular flows of refugees and migrants, based on international cooperation and respect for international human rights law.”⁣  ⁣ Meanwhile, Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said that Kigali was “pleased” that the bill had been passed.⁣ ⁣ 📸 UK parliament/Jessica Taylor/Handout via Reuters

Israel has failed to provide evidence backing up its claim that members of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNWRA) were involved in terror activities, according to a new report. Israel made the accusations in the aftermath of the October 7 Hamas terror attacks, which led to some donors freezing funds for the UN agency. But an independent report on UNWRA’s neutrality, published on Monday, said Israel had not substantiated the allegations. The investigation was carried out by former French foreign minister, Catherine Colonna. Following her report’s publication, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged support for UNWRA. A statement released through his official spokesman said, “Moving forward, the Secretary-General appeals to all stakeholders to actively support UNRWA, as it is a lifeline for Palestine refugees in the region.” However, the report did find there were areas where improvements could be made to guarantee UNWRA’s neutrality. These included, among others, its staff expressing political opinions, and the neutrality of its teaching materials. As a result of Israel’s accusations, multiple international donors stopped funding to the agency, resulting in a shortfall of around $450 million. Guterres’s office said he accepted the recommendations made for improvements in Colonna’s report, and that UNWRA would establish an action plan to implement them. The spokesperson for Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oren Marmostein, was quoted by Associated Press as saying: "The Colonna report ignores the severity of the problem and offers cosmetic solutions that do not deal with the enormous scope of Hamas' infiltration of UNRWA. This is not what a genuine and thorough review looks like. This is what an effort to avoid the problem and not address it head on looks like." A separate investigation by the UN’s internal oversight panel into Israeli allegations 12 UNWRA staffers participated in the October 7 attacks has yet to makes its final report, AP added.

Kremlin critic Yulia Navalnaya and her late husband Alexei Navalny have received this year's "Freedom Prize of the Media." Navalnaya and her husband were honored for their brave and non-violent battle against a brutal dictatorship in Russia, according to a jury statement. "They are the faces of a better, new, free and democratic Russia. They are the resistance heroes of our time who are willing to sacrifice their lives for a better world." Speaking at a ceremony in Bavaria, Navalnaya reiterated earlier remarks that Russian President Vladimir Putin had killed her husband in prison. She said his organization will continue to find new ways to bypass censorship in Russia and "keep Russians updated with the truth." In an interview with Time magazine published two days earlier, Navalnaya said she had hired a bodyguard following a hammer attack on a senior ally of her late husband. A hammer-wielding assailant attacked Leonid Volkov, a Navalny aide, outside his home in Vilnius, Lithuania, in March, breaking his arm and pounding his leg with a series of blows. According to Microsoft, Russian online campaigns aimed at influencing the upcoming US presidential election have been detected over the past 45 days, albeit slower than previous election cycles. These Russia-linked activities involve disseminating divisive content, particularly criticising American support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, targeting US audiences. The tech giant’s researchers highlighted a rise in messaging concerning Ukraine through traditional media and social platforms, involving at least 70 Russia-affiliated activity sets. The most prominent of these campaigns is reportedly linked to Russia’s Presidential Administration, while another focuses on spreading disinformation across multiple languages. This strategy involves initially posting content on video channels under the guise of a whistle-blower or citizen journalist. The disinformation is then amplified through a network of websites such as DC Weekly and Miami Chronicle. Two of the best-selling baby-food brands marketed by Nestlé in low-and middle-income countries contain high levels of added sugar, a new report has found. But the same products are sugar free in Germany, France and the UK – Nestlé's main European markets, as well as in Switzerland – Nestlé's home country. These are the findings of an investigation led by Swiss NGO Public Eye and the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) – they say the Swiss food giant is getting kids in low-income countries hooked on sugar.  "Our investigation shows that, for Nestlé, not all babies are equal when it comes to added sugar," they said in their report, adding that the "harmful double standard" contributes to the rise of obesity and leads children to develop a life-long preference for sugary products. Campaigners from Public Eye sent samples of Nestlé's baby-food products sold in Africa, Asia and Latin America to a Belgian laboratory for testing. They found that most Cerelac and Nido products marketed in lower-income countries do contain added sugar, "often at high levels." In Switzerland, Nestlé promotes its biscuit-flavoured cereals for babies aged from six months with the claim "no added sugar," while in Senegal and South Africa, Cerelac cereals with the same flavour contain 6 grams of added sugar per serving, according to Public Eye. Cerelac wheat-based cereals for six-month-old babies sold by Nestlé in Germany and the UK has no added sugar, while the same product contains over 5 grams per serving in Ethiopia and 6 grams in Thailand. Public Eye said Nestlé did not respond to their specific questions regarding the double standard, but said it "has reduced by 11% the total amount of added sugars in [its] infant cereal portfolio worldwide" over the past decade.

Six months into the war, 10,000 Palestinian women in Gaza have been killed — among them an estimated 6,000 mothers, leaving 19,000 children orphaned, UN Women said. The latest Gender Alert on Gaza, released Tuesday, paints a stark picture of how women and children are bearing the brunt of the hostilities. "Women who have survived the bombing are suffering daily starvation, sickness, and constant fear," said Susanne Mikhail, the regional director of UN Women in the Arab states at a media briefing in Geneva. "The war in Gaza is no doubt a war on women, who are paying a heavy price for a war not of their making." UN Women said over a million Palestinian women face "catastrophic" hunger and stressed that breastfeeding and pregnant women are in especially critical need of clean water. The Hamas-run Health Ministry in Gaza said on Tuesday that 33,843 people had been killed in the territory since the start of the war more than six months ago. Israel launched an air and ground offensive in Gaza following the Hamas-led terror attacks of October 7, in which 1,200 people were killed and some 250 people were taken hostage. 🔗For the latest, tap the link in our bio.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Charlie Bell, Microsoft’s executive vice president of security, labelled the company as ‘ground zero’ for foreign state-sponsored hackers. ‘They’re incredibly good at collecting data over time, gathering and gathering more and more momentum and then figuring out how to keep parlaying that into more and more success,’ Bell stated. This statement comes after a series of cybersecurity breaches tied to foreign governments, prompting Microsoft to launch the Secure Future Initiative last November. Notably, among these breaches was an incursion by hackers linked to China, who gained access to customer emails in May. Subsequently, in the summer of 2023, a Russia-linked group known as Anonymous Sudan compromised the data of 30 million customers. For more visit 📲 𝗱𝗶𝗴.𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 #dwobservatory #dwnews #digwatch

The city council in Barcelona has found a creative way to combat overtourism: It wiped a popular bus route off the (virtual) map. Tourists checking Google Maps or Apple Maps to get to Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell no longer have bus no. 116 suggested to them as an option, and instead have to navigate the hilly streets to the park some other way. For years, residents of the La Salut neighborhood where the popular tourist attraction is located have complained of being unable to secure seats or even get on the bus, as it was always crammed with tourists. Even elderly people often couldn’t get aboard, according to locals. Park Güell is the city’s second-most popular attraction, after the Sagrada Familia basilica. The move has apparently proven to be successful, with local commuters reporting that the now-secret bus has become significantly emptier since the route was scrubbed off the internet. “We laughed at the idea at first,” César Sánchez, a local activist, told reporters. “But we’re amazed that the measure has been so effective.” Barcelona isn’t the only city trying to find a way to deal with mass tourism. Venice, another hugely popular destination, has recently introduced a fee for one-day visitors in an attempt to better manage the flow of visitors. What do you think of Barcelona’s decision to remove the 116 bus from the internet?

A US court has sentenced movie weapons supervisor Hannah Gutierrez-Reed to 18 months in prison in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin on the set of the Western film “Rust.” Gutierrez-Reed was convicted in March by a jury on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Halyna Hutchins, and has been held for more than a month at a county jail in New Mexico. Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer for “Rust,” was pointing a gun at Hutchins when the revolver went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza. Prosecutors blamed Gutierrez-Reed for unwittingly bringing live ammunition onto the set of “Rust” where it was expressly prohibited, and for failing to follow basic gun safety protocols. After a two-week trial, the jury deliberated for about three hours in reaching its verdict. Gutierrez-Reed was acquitted at trial of allegations she tampered with evidence in the “Rust” investigation. They stated the 26-year-old will forever be affected negatively by intense publicity, and has suffered from anxiety, fear and depression as a result. Special prosecutor Kari Morrissey urged the judge to impose the maximum prison sentence and designate Gutierrez-Reed as a “serious violent offender” to limit her eligibility for a sentence reduction later, describing the defendant’s behavior on set as exceptionally reckless. Baldwin faces involuntary manslaughter proceedings in July.

Abortions are still technically illegal in Germany, but a government-appointed commission on reproductive self-determination and reproductive medicine has now recommended they be legalized within the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. The report containing the recommendation, which was published by the commission on Monday, has reignited an ongoing debate among Germany’s political parties. While it’s still unclear how the governing coalition, led by Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, will deal with the non-binding recommendation, the center-right CDU/CSU is strictly against any change to the current law and warns against pushing ahead with the liberalization of abortion. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has also rejected the proposal, arguing instead for a tightening of existing laws. Under Germany’s criminal code, paragraph 218 outlaws abortions but does not punish women seeking an abortion if they receive a consultation from a state-approved organization up to the 12th week of pregnancy. Members of the commission argued that legalizing abortion would make a big difference to people undergoing the procedure, including receiving coverage from public health insurers. At the moment, public health insurance only covers abortions if they’re found to be medically necessary or if the pregnancy is a product of rape. The commission’s report emphasised that Germany’s existing law was not compatible with international standards and needed to be modernized. In 2022, the German government abolished a Nazi-era law forbidding doctors from advertising abortion services.

After Iran’s missile strikes against Israel on Saturday, world leaders are expressing their support for Israel and condemning the attack. After closing its airspace late on Saturday, Israel announced its opening on Sunday morning, indicating a slow return to normal operations. The UN Security Council will be holding an emergency session on Sunday to discuss Iran’s attack. US President Joe Biden, meanwhile, has said that he and his fellow G7 nations will be issuing a “united diplomatic response.” Israel and its allies intercepted 99% of the more than 300 Iranian drones and missiles sent toward Israeli territory on Saturday, according to Israeli military spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari. Hagari said in a televised briefing that the interceptions represented “a very significant strategic success” and that “the Iranian attack was foiled.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a defiant message on Sunday following the Iranian attack, saying Israel would achieve victory. “We intercepted, we repelled, together we shall win,” he wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. The attack has raised tensions to the highest level since the Israel-Hamas war began six months ago, and risks escalation to a larger conflict in the Middle East. Iran said they were retaliating in response to a strike on Iran’s embassy in Damascus, Syria in early April that killed at least 13 people, including seven high-ranking officers of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Iran has blamed Israel for the strike. Israel has not claimed responsibility for the airstrike and seldom claims involvement in foreign military operations. Iran has said it will respond with a yet larger attack on Israeli territory if Israel retaliates against Tehran’s overnight drone and missile onslaught. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack while calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities. All parties should “exercise maximum restraint to avoid any action that could lead to major military confrontations on multiple fronts in the Middle East.”

Iran has launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel, the Iranian military said on Saturday. A spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Iran had launched more than 100 drones, indicating the attack could take "some hours" to reach Israeli territory. Israel's military said its forces and allies were closely monitoring the projectiles and were ready to defend Israel. "This is a severe and dangerous escalation," IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a statement, describing the attack as "large-scale" and "direct." Iran had warned that Israel would be "punished" for a airstrike on its consulate in Syria on April 1. Israel is believed to be behind hundreds of strikes in recent years on Iranian-linked targets in Syria but has not commented on the Damascus strike. Israel has closed its commercial airspace. Neighbouring Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon have also announced closures. 🔗For the latest, tap the link in our bio.
