That being said, I still have a hunch she’s a she. 🤞Her daddy is our French Black Copper Maran, Friar Tuck. . Pic 3: Mama Cass and Chipmunk with the best mama hen ever, Super, our wonderful svarthona. I was told svarthonas make excellent mamas and Super is a strong case! She was the most faithful broody of them all and therefore hatched most of the ten herself. And for quite a while all the chicks shared three mamas (Super, Tiger our blue maran, and Miss Dashwood our buff orpington). Super has been the only mom on deck for a couple weeks now, and she never leaves them. She even moved them out of their little coop and they roost with her in the adult coop now. Our home hatched baby Myrtle gave us her first egg today!!!! Well, we got 6 for 6 yesterday from the pullets. 4 were my own EE/OE project, one cross backfired and that’s Cleo - tinted egg (EE x EE). Asha (EE x Bluebell) lays a greeny-grey egg with a bloom, and sometimes grey speckles. I love her eggs. Ruby lays a green with white specks in each pore, so I know hers (EE x Welsummer), but no speckles as hoped 😔 Lyra lays a green, I think with pale brown speckles (I thought she was Humbug’s daughter (Welsummer x), but the markings would be more typical of Summer’s genetics (pure Welsummer). Hers are the biggest as she’s been laying the longest... but, I bought in 2 OEs, they’re first eggs were incredible, but I’ve not been able to tell the difference much as they hardly lay on the same day. I think it’s the khaki/green egg Top right and the egg below it. Who lays what, I’ve no idea. We’ve called them Ember & Vesper and I’m constantly getting them mixed up as Ember looks like she should be called Vesper to me, but she is a blue colour with brown neck feathers (as if she’s glowing, hence Ember) and Vesper is all blue. So, we got 6, I’m none the wiser, but hey ho. Spring is on the way. Here’s to a season of beautifully coloured eggs! Oh, and Cleo’s Mum Emme has started laying again, so we have another green there. 😰Sad day on the ranch. Came home from church to five dead hens. Breaks my heart that it was my own fault. 😣I locked the door but it wasn't latched. #PennyAnnCoonhound got out and had her terrible fun and then, worse, went to the neighbors and attacked their chickens, too. No bodies found yet over there, but she did injure a sweet old #ameraucana . When my neighbor found her (we followed the trail of feathers), the poor bird screamed and screamed in her human mama's arms! 😰😫The rest of our flock seem unharmed physically, but Sgt. Peep refuses to come out from his hiding spot so I don't know about him, yet. Anyway, here are our five RIPs, in order: Joy (one of our first 4 and the one who went in the stranger's RV), Poppy (the bullied flock member), Batman (my friend's fav before she gave her flock to me), Josey (who we had from a chick and nursed to health in July), and P. My EE/OE growers are coming along nicely. They're all daughters of a Cream Legbar rooster. . The salmon breasted girl is from a EE (half CLB herself). I didn't mean to hatch eggs from this girl, but her egg was almost blue I thought it was an Araucana egg until closer inspection! She'll likely lay a blue egg or very, very pale green. . The grey girl is from a Bluebell hen who lays a speckled, tinted egg, so I'm hoping for a speckled, pastel green egg. . The girl with the crest is from a Welsummer x hen who lays speckled, fairly dark brown eggs, so hoping for a speckled light olive egg. . Finally, the "Welsummer" looking girl is from a Welsummer who lays huge, dark brown eggs, so hoping for a decent Olive colour. . Poppy update: I've gone back and forth on culling her or not. I have my method all researched and ready to go--I'm 90% sure I could do it without a second pair of hands or support. But right when I'm about to do it, she starts acting like a happy old hen again--wandering and scratching and mingling. All will be well, then she'll mix with the bullies... . . This morning the dumb gal insisted on mingling with the larger group while I ate my breakfast out there. Sergeant Peep, Chief of Poppy Torture, even gave her the stink eye and a couple warnings. She ignored them. Worse, when he made an advance she didn't run. She let him do as he pleased without a fight! We have an abuser AND a matching codependent. . . Anyway, he didn't injure her too badly today. Just the same old scull scab she's had for weeks that occasionally reopens at the edge when she's attacked. But she did something she's never done before: she hopped on my lap! . . Poppy came from a group of older gals that weren't used to being handled so she has never been interested in being held or petted. She avoids human contact. But being the most bullied flock member, I tend to her everyday. I spray #vetericyn on any new wounds, I carry her to the coop at bedtime and place her where the others can't get to her, I check on her in her lavender hiding spot when she's not out and about and I refill her "secret" water and food. She has ALWAYS run from me. But not today! . . I was fairly shocked but also pleased that she finally realized who I am and what I'm good for! 😆I tucked her head under my arm and we spent a good long time like that, seated and walking, until I put her in her secret lavender bush with her water. . . Well GREAT. Now I REALLY won't want to cull her! 🙄 But I know I'll do the right thing when needed. A couple years ago we put down our faithful dog of 18 years, Herschel. I asked him for the latter duration of his life to "tell me when it's time." I was hell bent to not allow my dog to suffer because I wasn't ready--what kind of love is that?! But I never wanted to end his life too soon, either. Well, he told me. I trust that Poppy will, too, in her chicken way. I have good ears. ❤️

This poor girl is worse than the bottom of the flock--she's the pond scum of the flock. They are all so terrible to her. Two roosters and this girl's original RIR flock-mates chase after her to bite and tear at her comb. Here I took some blue sidewalk chalk and water to try and cover it up, but I'll buy some #bluekote today. Shortly after I took this photo when I went inside to shower, they attacked her so terribly I came out to find her hiding her head in the feeder, her eyes so swollen and bloody that at first I thought the bullies had gouged them out. (A little #vetericyn spray and she opened them--two whole eyeballs, thank goodness.) The feathers on her scalp are plucked out and I'm just glad to not have a view of her skull. I put her in the hospital pen/ dog kennel yesterday and today put her in the tractor coop alone while the others free range. The meanest of them are actually stalking her and trying to get their heads in the chicken wire to peck her! Savage chickens! 😡Beasts! 😡 Any advice here, chicken farmers? I also wonder how old she is and if that has something to do with it. She's one of the six I adopted from a friend recently, and she seems so old to me. Her feathers aren't soft like my own girls', the scales on her legs are kind of ugly, and she is surprisingly heavy. I assume she's an Easter Egger but her comb isn't like my EEs little pea combs. Anyway, now I have a special fondness for this old girl. We named her Poppy on her arrival. I do believe I'll be taking a certain white rooster to #thestockshop today.
