When you go outside at 5:30 to gather eggs and head distressed baby chickens peeping... but you don't have any hens sitting? Do you? Introducing Rogue 3 - who had hunkered down in a derelict old coop were going to take to the dump and hatched NINETEEN CHICKS. A couple of them had gotten out of the pen and couldn't get back in and were distressed. Thus, the peeping. So I climbed in the pen and risked life and limb to get the other babies out from under her. Then wrestled her out and we put them all in the trampoline pen that we (thankfully) repaired last weekend. They all appear to be doing fine. It’s been awhile since we did a Peg update! This little roo was rescued back in January with 26 other tiny birds. We were contacted by a local veteran who had fallen on very hard times and could no longer provide even basic care for his flock. It took us several trips to catch everyone, as they were in an area without proper fencing or enclosed coops. Thankfully, most of the birds had only minor injuries, but Peg (who we thought was a hen as he was only a few months old) suffered extensive frostbite on his feet. Peg’s confidence, youth, and zest for life all helped him to recover from this terrible experience. Back in May, he had molds taken at the vet hospital for prosthetics, which never ended up working out. We tried everything for Peg, until we came to the conclusion that he’s really doing quite well on his own. As long as he has a little padding, he’s comfortable and even able to run. Peg still lives in the sanctuary house with our other special needs birds, but on nice days they all go out to their little aviaries to be in the grass and sunshine together. He’s a happy, healthy boy and caring for him is a joy and a reminder of resilience and determination. 20 Sweet Baby Chicks! 🐣🐥 We recently decided that instead of hatching out eggs this year we were going to purchase chicks. Considering the time that it takes to hatch out and care for day-old chicks we felt it was the most responsible choice to purchase birds this year due to time restrictions from our busy workload. We also decided that we wanted to go back to a large mixed flock to explore other breeds and their temperaments in order to consider which other bird types we would like to breed in the future. In the past I’ve had mixed flocks and it is something I enjoy very much because I get to see a variety of different breeds and it makes it very interesting and fun collecting different colored eggs. Chicken Mom moment! We never made any special efforts to socialize our chickens, but I discovered today that Olive doesn’t mind getting picked up at all 😄 She was a fussy chick that didn’t like being handled, so this was a nice surprise 🌼 Honey and Maple, the two Rhode Island Reds, were friendly as teens and often perched on my hand, but these days they don’t even like to entertain pets. We’ll see if Olive can start to rub off onto the rest of the flock! #backyardchickens

Virginia was battle tested this morning. After tracking the trail of feathers, I found her hiding behind the neighbor’s trash bin. She stood still in the cage for over an hour. Once the shock wore off she longing gazed at the outdoors. Upon realizing she wasn’t going anywhere, she joined us for a game of Wingspan where she waited patiently for her turn.
