I tried Banh Khot at this small business that specializes in them. Banh Khot are mini savory “cakes” made of rice flour with tumeric and coconut milk. Sup is their pho concept, and it seems to always be poppin in here! Their main menu consists of pho (with unlimited noodles!) but they also have a lot of other items too if you’re not feeling pho. Here’s what we got: 🍜 Beef Belly Pho - pho rice noodles in a 48 hr bone broth with thinly sliced beef belly, white onions, cilantro, and scallions — the beef belly was nicely marbled and added a more fatty rich taste to the broth! I’ve been obsessed with smoothie bowls recently, and the Prozis granola and chocolate syrup is the perfect topping for these! I got to try their 🍓 Forest Fruits Granola and 🍫 Zero Chocolate syrup. 📍 Hook & Anchor 🍴Seafood ✨ Hook & Anchor is one of my favorite local restaurants specializing in seafood dishes! It’s casual and no-frills, perfect for when we want to have a good dinner on a random night without needing to fuss about reservations, dressing up, etc. — and without breaking the bank! They have different rotating dishes and specials depending on what’s in season, as well as their menu staples such as the popular lobster roll and clam chowder! You just order at the counter and seat yourself, and they bring out the food for you. Here’s what we got: 🥗 Newport’s Finest - mixed greens, grilled shrimp, lobster, crab, cherry tomato, radish, avocado — A filling salad with a variety of proteins! They had a few different dressings to choose. We got the creamy cilantro one which was great to dip the proteins in :) I wish the crab was served in bigger pieces so that it is more substantial, but I really enjoyed the plump shrimp (good char on it) plus the large lobster pieces (super fresh, not stringy at all)! 💙 Clams - steamed clams in a savory broth served with a side of bread — one of their weekly rotating items. I was so happy to see that each shell had a clam in it bc I’m used to places skimping where much of the clams are just empty shells. The clams went well with the wine/herb based broth and the bread was greatly appreciated to dip! They also offer it with pasta too if you want to make it a meal versus a side 🎣 Red Snapper - we got this as a side to share (+$6 to add on fish to your salad). Perfectly cooked and well seasoned + tender meat!
📍 Contra Coffee 🍴 Matcha + Iced Latte ✨ Stumbled upon Contra Coffee this past weekend and saw that it was a full house on a Sunday at 5pm, so I knew this place had to be good! They specialize in coffee and tea on tap with a good variety of drinks on their core menu and some seasonal ones too. Service was friendly and quick! Here’s what I got: 🐝 Hunny Pot - honey cinnamon oat milk latte - simple and not too sweet! I enjoyed the cinnamon flavor of this and that it was oat milk (gentle on the stomach!) 💜 Slow Bloom - lavender matcha latte - lavender wasn’t too strong, but the matcha was smooth and didn’t taste watered down! They had a lot of tables for studying / working, but it does look like it fills up fast and stays filled — so I’d recommend coming early if you want to snag a seat. Next time, I’m coming back for their menu item “The Liftoff”, which is a flight of 4 drinks from the tap of your choice!
📍 King Com Tam 🍴 Rice Plate ✨ I don't eat com tam often, but anytime I do, it satisfies a craving I didn't even know I had. For those who have never had, com tam is a Vietnamese rice plate made with broken rice, meaning the grains are smaller than the normal ones you're probably used to! It's served with meats, fresh veggies, and a savory umami nuoc mam (fish sauce) to pour on top. I ordered the rice plate with grilled pork, shredded pork, steamed egg, and bean curd skin w/ shrimp. They also give a side of broth for sipping too. Perfect portion for me and food came out fast since it wasn't too busy this day!

This is a no-frills casual poke spot right by the beach. They offer poke by the pound and poke bowls in 2 sizes. For the bowls, you choose your sauce, protein, base, and toppings. Here’s what I got: Small bowl with tuna and salmon, spicy shoyu sauce, white rice, and cucumber, crispy garlic, masago, furikake Fish is so so fresh (tuna is comparable to the islands and tastes like it was flown over from there)! 📍 Active Culture 🍴 Rice Bowl + Smoothie ✨ I’ve been so so grateful for those weekend days where I get to take walks near the beach and have a grain bowl for lunch ☀️ I have been to Active Culture several times, and it has always been a solid lunch spot with friendly service and good food ☺️ The smoothie I got was a classic strawberry banana — creamy, sweet, and perfect with the grain bowl. I tried a new bowl this time: Whole Bowl: organic brown rice, organic black and red beans, cheddar cheese, cabbage, salsa, avocado, cilantro, OG sauce I thought it was super filling and had good flavor bc of the sauce, cheese, and salsa, but honestly my favorite bowl here is still the LB Bowl bc it has prosciutto and goat cheese! If that’s not your thing, they also have plenty of healthy food options like rice bowls, wraps, bagels, soups, smoothies, and frozen yogurt!
📍TakoHaus 🍴Prawn Cracker ✨ Entering the new month of March makes me excited that spring and summer are right around the corner — which means outdoor night markets and food festivals are coming up soon ☺️ Pictured here is TakoHaus, which I tried during a previous 626 night market. It’s a seafood cracker that’s made fresh to order. Pressed super thin and becomes light and crispy almost like a chip! They also offer an upgrade where you can add a prawn pressed into the cracker so i of course had to do that 🦐 I also added spicy Mayo and furikake. Def drew a lot of attention and had a lot of people asking which booth they were at when I was walking around with it 😂 this was such a fun, savory snack! Very shareable too if you’re going with a group. Hoping they come back for the 2024 season!

📍Boiling Point 🍴Hot pot, shaved ice, boba drinks ✨ A few weeks ago it was POURING in SoCal bc of the storm, but it was 100% worth going out for this meal! Boiling Point has opened up a second location at Garden Grove, and this one has a Jin Tea shop integrated into it, meaning that they serve teas that are different than their usual drink menu! They raised their prices, but they have double meat portions now compared to before, and unlimited rice. 🍲 Beef Hot Soup (med spicy) - Napa, Vermicelli, Sliced Beef, Corn, Seafood Mushroom, Tomato, Firm Tofu, Tempura, Meat Ball (Pork), Fish Cake, Fried Tofu Skin, Imitation Crab Stick, Green Onion, Cilantro - Beef is my go-to everytime I’m here and I love adding the self-serve sauces to it / dipping my meat in the sauces! 🍚 Scallion Gravy Rice - available as a side order or an upgrade (extra charge) to the rice that’s included with your meal. Highly recommend; this was so savory + flavorful! 🧋 Love Potion - passion fruit juice + organic butterfly pea flower tea — def for the aesthetics but tbh just a passion fruit juice! It’s pricey for what it is, but I do appreciate the fresh fruit they use and could see it being helpful to cool down the spices if you’re having it with your meal 🧋 Roasted Oolong Milk Tea - I wish I got boba with this bc it would’ve made it sweeter! I felt like the drink was more on the milky side, which is unfortunate bc I like my milk teas more strong on the tea flavor. I’ll def need to try this again sometime to see if it was just an off day! 🍧 Old Time Delight Shaved Ice - shaved ice with egg pudding, boba, red bean, mung bean, and condensed milk — I love the old time delight flavor so much from their milk tea, and this one def tastes like it! The toppings are plentiful and delicious. I just wish the ice was a bit finer and fluffier bc it was kind of chunky and clumped together at times.
