30 year old system "Still working good" that was scheduled by new homeowners for its first maintenance, I'm pretty sure ever. Had the original capacitors, contactor, never had the coil cleaned, and the blower motor (whether heating or cooling the blower in your furnace or air handler is what pushes the air) was severely impacted. We discussed options for cleaning and preventative maintenance VS replacement. This split system change out was upgraded to a 2 stage AC (kinda like a V8 truck that runs on fewer cylinders when cruising on the freeway) matched with a 2 stage furnace and variable speed blower motor. Makes for more even temperatures and the system doesn't have to run at 100% to maintain temperature. Initially, our client wanted to convert to a Heat Pump (uses electricity to heat and electricity to cool. It's literally an air conditioner in reverse) because of the $3,000 SMUD Rebate and CAs new Upto $4,900 rebate for converting from gas heat to Heat pump, but after discussing how they work and differences on how they heat they opted for traditional gas Heat. The rebates are awesome, but there is a pretty big difference in the heating experience. SERVICE CALL - NO HEAT A client found us thru Yelp and scheduled a $49 diagnostic when their brand new York heat pump wouldn't properly heat "Mom's" house. A "friend" had installed it. Without permits. Or regard for function or serviceability after installation. I dont know why guys do this. He literally installed it backwards with the service access panels against a roof support. And no work platform on the other side. Also failed to let the client know that the far majority of thr duct system was falling apart and needed addressed. The saddest part is when they asked what a "basic system installed correctly would cost?" And the number I quoted ended up being $4,000 cheaper than what the "friend" had charged. I was so frustrated for them I couldn't even charge for the diagnostic. Here is a prime example of why annual maintenance can be a good idea. 5 year old system (not one of our installs) has had quite a bit of water inside the furnace from condensation. Further investigation shows its coming from the Evap Coil. (the box glued and screwed to the top of the furnace) definitely something to keep an eye on and check if just a failed drain pan, clogged drain, or other issues. The outdoor unit was in great shape just needs a good cleaning. The side closest to the house tends to be the dirtiest. We remove all the panels and do a chemical coil clean from the inside out.
