⚠️ Warning: the content of this post may be disturbing to some individuals. MARS staff were called out to rescue a Great Horned Owl chick who had fallen from their nest. The bird was found on the ground, unable to walk, and too young to fly away. There was visibly something wrong with its right leg, and so it was brought back to the hospital for a more thorough examination and x-rays. What was found was incredibly heartbreaking. This owl had suffered a broken tibiotarsus (leg bone) that was broken in such a way that it would never heal properly, and the bird would have chronic pain for the rest of its life. There also appears to be nerve damage, which wouldn't allow the bird to ever use its leg or feet properly, which means it would never be able to hunt on its own. Because of these injuries, the bird was humanely euthanized. ⚠️ The reason we are putting this post up is because the finder told staff that multiple members of the public have come onto her private property to take pictures of these owls and their babies over the last couple of years. Disturbing the nest of this baby has almost certainly resulted in its death. We want to stress the importance of leaving active nests alone, as disturbing them may have fatal consequences. If you ever find an active nest, leave the area, and don't give the exact location to anyone. Even taking pictures from the ground is enough to cause the parents and chicks distress - you have to remember that these animals view us as predators, no matter our intentions. Thank you to the finder for giving us permission to come onto her property to retrieve this chick. Unfortunately, the very attentive parents who were present while the chick was rescued, will never know what happened to their baby. This is the grim reality of wildlife rehabilitation: we are not able to save all wildlife. The goal of our organization is to release healthy individuals back into the wild so that they can survive and thrive. My last finch post!!! They slipped through my fingers and flew away when I was not looking. They are gone except for the little egg that did not hatch. Amazing thing is mom and dad came for them. They perched on the dogwood and were chirping to them. I thought they were going to feed them. Instead they were telling them to get lazy asses out of that nasty nest filled with bird poop. I came back and the last two flew away. Alas no more finches to greet each morning, no whore birds to trash and no grackles to fear. I’m so sad but so happy I was able to document nature at its best and not its worst. We have the news to take care of the that. 🥲🥲🥲 #nest #birds#
Elsa und Paul sind wieder da. Im letzten Frühjahr hatte sich ein Storchenpärchen auf einem stillgelegten Schornstein nahe des Stederdorfer Bahnhofs ein gemütliches #Nest gebaut und dort Junge zur Welt gebracht. Die Kids des DRK-Kindergartens Wrestedt hatten den beiden Eltern in einer Umfrage die Namen Elsa und Paul gegeben. Im Herbst verließ das #Storchenpaar ihr Zuhause, um gen Süden zu ziehen. Nun sind die beiden Stelzvögel seit einigen Wochen wieder zurück. Die Kids des DRK-Kindergartens Wrestedt dürfen nun erneut das wunderbare Naturschauspiel quasi aus erster Reihe verfolgen. The entrance hole is oblong rather than the circular shape of most woodpecker holes. For the finishing touches, the bird climbs all the way into the hole and chips away at it from the inside. Periodically the adult picks up several chips at a time in its bill and tosses them from the cavity entrance. They grow pretty quickly for large birds, clambering out of nest at 3 weeks, and able to fly at 6-7 weeks. Every spring Great Egrets congregate into colonies at nesting sights known as #rookeries, often with other species of wading birds.
