I may have hit the epitome of my quilting career last weekend. I made a quilt. For a goat. 🐐 My niece won “Reserve Grand Champion Market Goat” at their local fair last week, and apparently it’s a thing there for prize winners to drape a banner over the animal’s back for the sale. 🤷🏼‍♀️ My sister-in-law reached out to ask if I could help with this. You bet your sweet self I can help with this! 🤣 I quilted a green panel with a simple 45-degree grid, and then shaped the ends into a banner-like shape using a bowl. I used bias binding to finish the edges. I found the gold fringe trim at my local hobby store and zig-zagged that on to the ends. The letters were made using two layers of #heatnbondlite - one of my favorite iron-on adhesive products from @thermoweb. I printed the letters in reverse onto the heat n bond (they make printer size pages!), adhered them to the white fabric (which, if you look closely, actually has little baby goats on it!!), and then cut them out. This is the most time-consuming part of this, but they turned out so good! I adhered the gold fabric to another sheet of heat n bond (*very* carefully - the fabric has some synthetic in it and I melted it the first time I tried… 😬 I turned the iron down a bit and used a pressing cloth after that and it was fine!). I arranged the white letters onto the pre-fused gold fabric, ironed them to adhere, and then cut around them with about 1/8” of the gold fabric as a border around each word. The words were then adhered to the quilted banner and I zig-zagged around each letter with the clear monofilament by @aurifilthread to secure them (I am completely obsessed with this stuff right now!), and honestly, this whole thing turned out so much better than I even hoped. 🙌 I *love* a good crafty challenge and even more when I can make it quilty. And maybe goat quilts are a niche market I need to explore?! 🐐🤣 What is the weirdest thing you have made something for - quilty or otherwise?! Hi there, Mary here again from @embercraftcompany, taking over the Aurifil Instagram feed this weekend! Earlier this year, I got to be one of the first people to try out the new #aurifilthread 8 wt. collection by @suzyquilts for Aurifil! This weight is great for hand-quilting, big stitch binding, embroidery, you can even put it through your machine - comment "BLOG" below for a direct link to my blog where I go into exhaustive detail on this! Now, previously, I would have said that 12 wt. was the limit of what I was willing to put through my machine - see my earlier posts for all my tips and tricks for that weight! I love the texture of it though, and knew once I got my hands on the 8 wt. that I had to see if I could make it work. Now, getting the tension right with this weight was definitely a bit tricky. In addition to my 12 wt. tips, there are a few more watch-outs to get the 8 wt through your machine: 1. Dial your stitches in on a test piece of the same thickness of your project. 2. Use a Jeans needle. 3. Use a heavier thread in the bobbin - I had the best results with 28 wt. 4. You will most likely need to tighten the top tension on your machine to get it right - the heavier the weight of thread in the bottom, the less I had to adjust this. 5. DO NOT use your automatic thread cutter. The thread is just to thick for it to handle. 6. Try to start and stop off your project. 99% of the tangles I got into were when starting or stopping. 7. Make sure to hang on to that top thread when starting a line of stitching to keep it from being sucked down into the bobbin area. Again, this is generally where I had problems, to making sure the thread stayed where it was supposed to be helped a lot. I ended up hand-quilting the same design with the thread on another pillow top and I love seeing them side by side - swipe to see! What is your favorite way to use the new 8 wt thread? Hi there, Mary here again from @embercraftcompany, taking over the Aurifil Instagram feed this weekend! This is my version of the #fluttersquilt - pattern by @freebirdquiltingdesigns. I was really excited to play with the quilting inside each heart to make them unique, using different thread weights and colors. This was all done on my domestic machine with my walking foot. I don't really love burying threads (does anyone though? 😅), so for these designs I traveled in the ditch to the next area, avoiding stopping and restarting as much as possible. Automated pantos travel back on themselves all the time, so why not try that with my walking foot? My best advice for walking foot quilting - yep, you guessed it. SLOW DOWN. It's called a "walking foot" for a reason. I find that every time I get in a hurry, my stitches get uneven and my lines get crooked. It's my signal to be mindful and present with the project I'm working on, and not to rush the process. I put my headphones in, find a good audio book or podcast, and settle in. Hi there! Mary here again from @embercraftcompany, taking over the Aurifil Instagram feed this weekend! So I am primarily a quilter, I love making quilts. I found quilting when the twins were only a few months old and instantly fell in love. As a new mom - struggling with supply issues, isolation due to the pandemic, and what was probably undiagnosed PPD - making quilts gave me a much needed creative outlet. I had something of my own again during a time when it felt like nothing was only mine anymore, and it was life-changing. As the kids have gotten older, though, I've had the urge to expand my sewing skills into garments. For myself, sure, but mostly for the kids. They are much easier to sew for and their outfits require much less fabric if the project doesn't quite work out. I love making them matchy matchy outfits, especially as I know my window for them to actually wear them together and is *very* small. My favorite makes for them this year combine my love of quilts with my love of making the kids garments - the result: these adorable jackets! These were made last fall from the Kids Quilted Jacket pattern by @northpatterns. Each jacket is lined in flannel and quilted with Aurifil Thread in 12 wt. in a different pattern. Now, 12 wt. thread can be a little tricky to get through your machine, but the incredible texture it provides is well worth the hassle. Hi there, it's Mary again from @embercraftcompany, taking over the Aurifil instagram feed this weekend! This is one of my all-time favorite quilted projects using Aurifil thread and one of the first times I tried some relatively dense quilting around a central motif. This Barn Owl FPP block is by @tomte.studio, one of my absolute favorite foundation paper piecing designers. I constructed the block by using lighter, textured woven fabrics for the bird, and a darker graphite solid for the background to really set it off! I quilted the background only with Aurifil 50 wt. in 6736 in a cross hatch - this is a beautiful dark grey thread, one of my favorite colors and it matched the fabric perfectly. I just kept adding quilting in different directions until it felt like enough! For me, it gives the impression of a muted starry night behind the nocturnal owl, and it came out so well. The tote pattern is self-drafted, but based on the methodology from a tutorial over on the @suzyquilts blog. One of my favorite things about Aurifil thread is the depth of colors - 270 and counting! I've yet to be stumped by not being able to find a coordinating color of thread for a project. A little about me: I’m a twin mama, quilt pattern tester and designer, avid maker, and lover of thread. it’s been a little quiet on my feed lately, I have a ton of stuff happening behind the scenes that I can’t quite share yet, but this summer is going to be amazing! 😍😍 But I am super duper excited to finally have these fabrics on my cutting table! These beauties are from the Seascape fabric collection by @maywoodstudio and as soon as I saw them, I knew they’d be a perfect beach-side cottage version of my #encircledstarsquilt! Super excited to finally share these makes with you!! A little bit ago, @maureenmaker sent me some of her gorgeous #gardenpartyfabrics she designed for @studio_e_fabrics! This is a really fun fabric collection with pretty florals, strawberries, hummingbirds, and the prettiest playing cards I’ve ever seen! The kids actually love looking at fabric with me (which I love), and Connor specifically asked for a ladybug shirt when he saw that print. Emma loved the pink vertical floral, but we needed to use some of the other prints as well to have enough for a dress. We started brainstorming there and came up with this mishmash of a dress using the bodice from one pattern and kind of a self-drafted patchwork skirt! I love how it all came out! The details: Connor’s shirt is the #thomasshirt pattern by @felicitypatterns - I’ve made this many times for him now, it’s my go-to short-sleeve button down for him and it comes together really well. I used plastic snaps for the buttons - so much easier to apply than buttons/buttonholes and he can snap them himself - so it’s a win/win here! Also, his size (4 now) still only takes a yard of fabric. Emma’s dress uses the bodice and collar from the aptly named Peter Pan Collar dress by @ohmeohmysewing. This pattern uses bias binding to finish the sleeveless armholes and collar, so that was new to me, but it turned out better than I thought it would. I used the dimensions in the pattern for the skirt, but adjusted both height and width a bit for easy patchwork math and added a ruffle. For the patchwork skirt, I sewed the individual squares together into rows and then serged them before joining the rows together (Swipe to see some detail on this!). This worked well although it was a bit tedious. I may try a really lightweight fusible next time, but wanted to make sure this stayed light for summer. The ruffle is basically double the length of the skirt. So happy with to how these both turned out! I took some time yesterday to work on a few of my #fabfarm quilt blocks. I finished the black and white cows and the bees and my farm is growing!! 🐮 🐝 I’m making this fun sampler quilt by @elizabethagh as a block of the month and I am waaaaay behind, per usual. 🤦‍♀️ These are months 1 & 2 and I just received month 10 in the mail. 😬 These blocks are *so* fun to piece but a little time consuming to cut and keep organized - I did get month 3 cut out as well, so hoping I can keep the ball rolling and make some more progress on this project! My Maywood Makers temperature quilt top for the month of March is complete! Full reveal coming soon, but swipe to see the BACK.🔥🔥 And, I have to share with ya’ll that I could not be happier to be done with this part of it. 😅 For those of you that might be seeing this for the first time, the second challenge as a Maker for @maywoodstudio was to put together a temperature quilt for the month of March, using the gorgeous Shadow Play blender fabrics for the highs and lows for each day. These will be featured at the @sistersoutdoorquiltshow thus summer. As March is generally pretty mild in Northern California, I had the idea to find the historical temperatures by the hour for my area to utilize a few more of the colors provided. While seeing the columns come together to reveal the temperature trends was honestly fascinating, sewing 744 3/4” x 1” rectangles was not my most exciting idea. 🤣 I did create my own foundation paper piecing templates to make it a bit easier, alternating the directions as I sewed the rows so they’d nest. I’m adding a temperature key to the backing and trying to decide how to quilt this. Maybe monofilament in the ditch to keep it simple? We took a quick day trip to Moss Beach this weekend, and of course I brought a quilt. 😍 This is a beautiful area about 20 miles south of San Francisco with easy trails through moss-covered cypress trees and a large beach with awesome tide pools to explore (if you time it right which we did not but there was still lots to see!). I brought my @diamondtextiles woven version of my #encircledstarsquilt with us and snagged a few pictures on our way down to the sand. 😍😍 She fit right in and is the perfect size for us to hang out on. Just realized I never posted the final look at my #westernskystarquilt! This was donated as a raffle prize for the 4-H horse event my niece organized for her Emerald Star project, hoping a horse-loving 4-Her is snuggling under this right now! I just adore how this turned out and I’m really going to need to make one for myself… 😍 Pattern is by @plainsandpine of course. Fabrics in the top are Kona in White, Navy, Cadet, and Lipstick and AGF Pure Solids in Zambia Stone and Morning Frost. Swipe to see the backing I used! It’s from the Quilting Cowgirl fabric collection from @maywoodstudio and it’s ADORABLE! Do you see the quilts hanging on the fence and the high heel boots?! 😍😍 I originally had this fabric earmarked for another project but how perfect does it match the colors in the top?! It could not be better. Donna from @featherbed_quilting quilted this up with a cute panto with cowboy hats, boots, and stars. Working on my April #aurifilartisan challenge today and I’m super excited about this one! This month’s theme is Garments. And while I sew outfits for the kids all the time, I don’t make a lot of things for myself. This is mostly because kids bodies are generally little rectangles that don’t require a ton of fabric and are generally easy to fit. 🤷🏼‍♀️😆 Curves are a bit more challenging to work around, plus making a long dress for me takes a *ton* of fabric, so the risk to reward here is generally a bit higher. BUT! In searching for dress patterns on Etsy, I found this gorgeous #cozettedress by @alli.marye (Allis Patterns on Etsy - swipe to see!) and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. It’s got a simply constructed bodice and long, gorgeous skirt with side gathers. I’m obsessed. 😍 The pattern does say intermediate to experienced sewists and while I don’t think I’m near either of those at least garment-wise, I’ve done most of the techniques separately on other things so 🤞🤞. But, fabrics. What to use? I don’t have 5 yards+ of any 60” wide fabrics around here. Maybe minky, but we’re not going there for this one. 😆 But I *do* have 4 panels of these gauzy, creamy curtains! Pulling out my inner Maria for this one! 🤣 These hung in my master bedroom in my old place before I moved in with my husband, so they’ve been sitting in a cupboard for 8+ years now. I think it’s time to give them another life! (Plus I missed the upcycling challenge for Aurifil earlier this year because #life, so this feels like a good way to catch up!). I’m hoping to use the tiebacks for the straps, too! Progress on my #maywoodmakers temperature quilt! This section is March 1-11, 2024, the days run from left to right. Each box represents the temperature each hour from 1am at the top to 12 midnight at the bottom. Temperatures were recorded from the weather station at the Stockton Municipal Airport (about 15 miles away from here and the closest station I could find that had historical temperatures by the hour!) and retrieved from Wunderground.com. Now, the original ask for this project was just the high and low temperature for my area, represented by different shades of these gorgeous Shadow Play blender fabrics by @maywoodstudio. I adore the texture these fabrics have, and playing with them in small pieces is showing that off to me even more. However, a Northern California Central Valley March is generally pretty mild, and my quilt would have had about 6 colors total. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Breaking the daily temperatures down by the hour and seeing them next to each other has become so much more interesting. If I have time, I may go back and identify days when it rained as that affects temperature here so much as well (generally warmer if you’re wondering!). I’m using foundation paper piecing to get this grid as perfect as possible. This has been interesting as I’m also having to piece alternate rows from the bottom up to get the units to nest. Something’s happening over heeeerrrreeee!! I am finally making one of Lindlee’s (@plainsandpine) gorgeous lone star quilt patterns and I’m so excited about this one! My niece asked if I would donate a quilt for a raffle prize for the Emerald Star event she’s working on for 4-H - she’s super into horses and is organizing a community-wide horse clinic for other 4-H members. She’s in 8th grade. 🥺 So stinking proud of her and of course my answer was heck yes! I decided to try the #westernskystarquilt for this. These patterns always strike me as a little bit country and it feels perfect to me. It’s one of the smaller patterns I have of hers coming in at 60” square and I love how the colors are laid out. The OG #roadtrippinquilt! This is the second quilt I ever designed! I was inspired by a fat quarter flat stack of these bright and happy prints from the #drivindown9fabric collection by @lysaflower for @pbsfabrics last summer and was looking for a block to show them off. I found this amazing variation on a “contrary wife” classic quilt block (ha, if that isn’t most appropriate! 🤣) and loved the large center square - perfect for fussy cutting! I found depending on how I cut the rest of the block, I could make directional fabrics work well, and made the design fat quarter-friendly. I don’t love sewing sashing on in a quilt, but I do love how it frames out the blocks here, so worth it! This pattern is releasing in two sleeps! I’m so excited! I brought both of my #roadtrippinquilt versions up to the cabin with us this weekend and got some pictures of the two of them together. 😍 They remind me of sisters - you have the calm and serene sister in the beautiful Lucca Essentials pastels from @diamondtextiles, and you have the wild and crazy sister in the bold prints and bright pinks and greens from the #drivindown9fabric collection by @lysaflower for @pbsfabrics! 👩‍⚕️👩🏻‍🎤 Both are so beautiful and unique, it’s a little lesson for me on how fabric choice can make the same pattern look so different! I originally utilized this classic block to show off the big, bold prints, and particularly the directional ones, but I’m loving it in these soft pastel wovens too. Okay. I’ve got templates, an epic data set and spreadsheet, and a plan. #MaywoodMakers temperature quilt featuring their Shadow Play blenders coming soon! Excel was my life in my pre-baby world, but I haven’t needed it much since to be honest. Like at all. 😆 It was so fun to dive into a detailed data set and try to scrounge up formulas from my child-addled memory to make sure I had enough fabric! You can see our temperatures here were solidly in the 36-80 range for the month of March ( #california 🙌🙌), but it makes for a relatively boring quilt. I was able to find historical temperatures by the hour from our local municipal airport weather station and will be using paper piecing to chart out each day by the hour! Texture for dayssssss…. I picked up my latest #roadtrippinquilt from @featherbed_quilting yesterday and gah. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ It’s gorgeous. She had a quilt draped over her longarm when I dropped it off that used this panto and I had to have it for mine! (I have no idea what it is, by the way, hopefully she can chime in!) I’m binding this baby as we speak with the same pastel Cabana Stripe as I used in my Daisy Mae wall hanging (see yesterday’s post) and it’s a perfect match. 🙌😍😍 This pattern will be releasing on Thursday, April 11th! A very happy release day to the #daisymaequilt pattern by @abbymaed! This pattern is perfect for Spring, it comes in 4 sizes and two colorways - I really think I need to make the fat quarter mix and match version! 😍 I made the sweetest spring wall hanging with the mini size with my leftover Lucca Essentials scraps (these wovens are by @diamondtextiles and are so so gorgeous!). The pastel Cabana Stripe for the binding might just be my favorite ever! 😍 I really love getting a little extra on the quilting for smaller items, and this is no exception. I decided that I wanted to max out the texture - I used 5 coordinating colors of #aurifilthread in 50 wt. (2024, 2882, 2410, 2115, & 5007). I’ve found you don’t need the exact shade to get your thread to blend nicely! Finally figured out what I’m going to do with *all* those 2.5” squares!! In an attempt control my scraps last year, I cut everything I thought I would use into 2.5” squares. Anything smaller was disposed of (listen, I had to draw the line somewhere!), and any colors or prints I didn’t think I’d use have been offered up on the free table at my guild (we have some scrappy ladies that love these thank goodness!). They are great for both fabrics I have one square of or many and are a perfect leader and ender project for me right now. I’ll square these up once I get a few more completed and probaby add some sashing once I’m ready to put all of these together! I try not to ever have a favorite block, but I just had to share a detail shot of this one 😍 While my #roadtrippinquilt pattern is made for fat quarters, I had a bit of the Cabana Stripe fabric leftover from the binding and figured that would be a fun little detail to add. The 8-at-time method for #hsts I use in the pattern is great for directional fabrics, with some rearranging, they can all be pointing the same way on the block! This top is getting quilted as we speak, I cannot wait to see her all done up! A sneaky peeky at a very early Easter morning finish! 🐰 I wrapped up the sashing on my @diamondtextiles Lucca Essentials version of my #roadtrippinquilt very *late* last night (so yes, technically Easter morning right? 😅), and it’s so perfect for the season! Really having a blast with the quilting on my #daisymaequilt wall hanging. 😍 The Dual Feed feature on my Bernina is generally enough to quilt smaller pieces like this and it’s nice to be able to use my 1/4” foot as a guide vs marking everything. Anything larger though, and I make sure to slap on my walking foot. I’m using some gorgeous @diamondtextiles Lucca Essentials scraps for this from another project I’m working on and I’m loving that aqua background! As you may have seen in some of my posts and stories, I had the absolute pleasure of getting to play with a *bunch* of the prints from the new #agfabstrart collection along with a few of the newly released #agfseedling colors earlier this month! Both of these collections are by @katarinaroccella for @artgalleryfabrics and are hitting stores now! The colors and textures in these fabrics are sooooo good. If you’ve been around here for a minute, you know I love the warm beiges pinks, and grays, and these absolutely fill the bill. I like the abstract elements of these prints and it’s a nice change from some of the more traditional designs I’m drawn to. Okay. My 10-year-old, Spirograph-loving self is having a moment with this one and I hope you’ll come along with me! ♥️💙💜💛💚🩷 The March #aurifilartisan project is all about using color! I chose these 8 gorgeous 50 wt spools and with fresh inspiration from my #quiltcon class with @jacquietps and her rotational designs, I dove in. Like big time. Like I should have stopped at 4 colors but just couldn’t. Like having the *big* box of crayons with the sharpener in the bottom and needing to try them all. 😆 I began by marking the center lines with a heat-erasing pen, and then the 30- & 60-degree lines in between with the angles on my ruler. I created elongated, oval-shaped templates with scrap cardboard and got to tracing. I used a different color for each rotation, minimizing starts and stops as much as possible. You can probably tell that I had a blast with this one, and while it may not be my most aesthetically pleasing work (it’s a *little* busy, I know 🤷🏼‍♀️), I am super proud of this. So much so, that I had to try an idea I’ve had banging around in my head - wrapping a quilt around a canvas! I found this 24x36” canvas at my local hobby shop for $14. I centered it on the quilt and stapled the edges to the back with a staple gun, starting in the centers and working my way to the corners, keeping it taught. I’m so excited to find the perfect place to hang this in our house! My head is bursting with ideas for both this type of quilting and putting it on a canvas, I can’t wait to try them out! A very happy release day to the #nouveaufleurquilt pattern by @campbell_soup_diary!! The is beauty has been a long time coming and I’m so glad it’s finally out in the world! The pattern features a pieced background using large and gentle drunkards path blocks to set the stage for the beautiful appliqué flowers. Allison has loads of info on her favorite starch appliqué method in the pattern, but it can easily be made using the raw edge method like I did (see my post the other day for loads of info on how to do that!). This sweet thing was gifted and received so I can finally post these finished pictures! I made this #astraquilt in the cover version - pattern and kit are by Katie from @zahmco - I had the pleasure of testing this pattern for her when she first released it and it’s been a pleasure to revisit it. This quilt is a wedding present for my brother-in-law and his lovely new wife, they got married back in September and while I had every intention of having this being finished in time for their wedding, life got in the way and here we are. 🤷🏼‍♀️😬 Donna, my wonderful longarmer at @featherbed_quilting both found the matching minky backing for me and quilted it in this lovely scalloped panto, and it’s a truly gorgeous finish. The label is a custom order from @everemblem I had made a while back - I love the fill in area and the section for the date. This a 2”x3” cotton label and while it is technically iron-on, I always sew around the outside, especially here on minky. They have lots of designs and are easy to work with - I need to reorder these soon! Now. Some people make gorgeous heirloom-style, bed-size quilts for wedding presents and I love and cherish that tradition. But I personally love to make cozy couch-snuggling, wrap-yourself-up-in-a-hug-from-us type quilty presents that get used and worn and loved and thrashed until they’re barely recognizable with the guarantee that I will either repair it or make you another one. That’s what this one is. Just wanted to post a little round up of pictures from our @mantecaquiltersguild Quilt and Fiber Arts show two weekends ago now! A sincere thank you to the friends and family who went out of their way to come see all the gorgeous quilts (and me! 🥰)! I finally have a pic together with Donna from @featherbed_quilting who is my go-to longarmer and one of my best quilty friends. She did the amazing quilting on the woven version of my #encircledstarsquilt hanging here. I also entered my #verbenaquilt - pattern by @capaquilts (also quilted by Donna!) and my #rosewoodquilt - pattern by @mysewquiltylife and custom quilted by @mollylovelythreads. My #quiltysneakers I made as part of the #stitchpink event last year with @aurifilthread and @modafabrics won both Chairman’s Choice and Viewer’s Choice for the accessories category! These have made their final rounds and can finally be given to my mom. 😅 I was in charge of the raffle year, and early returns said we made about $4,000! I haven’t heard final numbers yet, but this blows me away. These funds go to our philanthropy efforts in the community, both in the form of materials for handmade quilts, pillowcases, and bags donated to foster care organizations, hospice, and women & children’s centers in the area, as well as cash donations to food banks and other groups doing the direct work. A huge thank you to @aurifilthread, @maywoodstudio, @artgalleryfabrics, and @thermoweb for their generous donations to our cause. This event is a ton of work (it’s amazing how long it takes to set everything up but also how fast they get it all down!), but is also so fun. #igquiltfest2024day2 - First Quilt I’m recycling last year’s post - this one doesn’t really change. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The first is probably the only surviving quilt I made in my 20’s that hasn’t been thrifted or given to the dog. 😆 I made this heart quilt for my grandmother for Christmas in 2003 and it lived on her rocking chair until she passed in 2017. I’m so glad to have gotten it back and it is one of my most cherished possessions. I remember having an old @fonsandporter beginning quilting book and a really tight budget. I would stalk the remnant bins at @joann_stores for goodies, but vividly remember paying full price for that paisley print and cringing a bit. 😆 The coral fabric is some kind of denim and the brown is corduroy. I backed it in the same corduroy and just folded the edges over to bind it (why waste that extra fabric?! 😅). The hearts are zigzagged to the top, and meant to be somewhat rustic (but maybe not this rustic 😆) and that red fabric bled all over unfortunately. It’s half machine quilted and half handquilted. I don’t remember what happened there but I have a feeling hand quilting through two layers of corduroy and denim was hard. 😅😅 The double wedding ring is the first quilt I made post-twins. This was one of those @therealcraftsy classes I watched early on by @quilter623 and I had to buy it. How hard could it be?! 🤣🤣 Honestly, though, Jackie broke down the process so well, it did feel approachable, and I am insanely proud of this one. I used an #anniesapron jelly roll from @connectingthreads for the paper-pieced arches and the borders - I originally bought enough fabric for a throw size, but ended up with a table-topper if that says anything… 😆 I bound this one by hand for the first time, and I just adore this little thing. Oh hey #igquiltfest! With a boatload of new faces around here after #quiltcon, an introduction feels like a timely prompt. I’m Mary, a stay-at-home mama of almost 4-year old twins (how are they almost 4 already?! 😢). They were born in March of 2020, right as the world was shutting down due to the pandemic. This was an insane time, I was struggling with lack of sleep, supply issues, and what I believe was a bit of undiagnosed PPD. I had been in a fast-paced finance job prior to their arrival, and though we had made the decision together that I would stay home - at least at first - it was so much harder for me than I ever imagined. Around May of that year (I only remember this now because that’s when I started this quilty instagram!) I watched a quilting show on TV, and the rest, I guess, is history! I had found something of my own I could do during naptimes, and the creative outlet was so freeing. I set out to learn all the things. I joined quilt-alongs, pattern tested like a maniac for awhile, learned how to sew curves, #fpp and #epp, I dove in head first. This is my personality and I’ve found that there isn’t much I can’t be at least okay at. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I am now working on my *own* patterns, which is incredibly satisfying. This is my own #encircledstarsquilt behind me and I couldn’t be more proud of this one. Quilts are my first love, but I’ve been diving into bags and garment-sewing over the last year, particularly for the kids, and it is so fun. I love making them matchy matchy and will do this as long as they will let me. 🤣 I really love participating in IG Quilt Fest every year. I’ve always kind of rolled my eyes at my friends who talk about decompressing after things like Burning Man, but here we are. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I seriously had the best time at #quiltcon2024. I’ve gone to the two before, but they were nothing like this. I met not one, but two of my quilty idols. @suzyquilts and @jacquietps were so incredibly nice. @karleeporterdesign drew a custom piece of her artwork on my arm, and I’d be lying if I didn’t consider getting it tattooed for a second… 🤣 Having my 8wt. Pillows showcased at the @aurifilthread thread booth was so cool. The quilts were insanely beautiful and so inspiring - I did not get enough pictures of my favorites. I’ll post more of the quilts this week, but 🤯. I really hope I can get up the courage to submit something for next year’s show. I met so many friends in real life, some I’ve been working with for *years* and only now getting to meet in person. I’m finally starting to get through some of my social anxiety, and having the courage to go up and talk to people. I didn’t get pictures with everyone, or if I did, they didn’t end up in my phone, but I loved every minute of it. It was also insanely crowded. I’ve heard several people say there was record attendance, and I believe it. Thursday and Friday were shoulder to shoulder at times in the booths. Even through the quilts. And do we need to talk about the line to get into Jacquie’s keynote speech? 🤣🤯 And while crowds like that generally make me anxious, it was also good to see the interest and community coming back together post-pandemic to appreciate this art and support the vendors. It’s a big jump from where it was in Phoenix in 2022, and I’m so glad. Thats all for now, thanks for letting me wallow in my experience for a minute. On my way home from #quiltcon2024 and while I’m still processing what an amazing weekend this was (I will 💯 have more to post soon!), I need to change gears a little. For my local friends, the @mantecaquiltersguild is putting on their annual show this weekend! Location is the SJC Office of Education - Wentworth Center, 2707 Transworld Drive, Stockton, CA. Hours are Saturday from 9-4, and Sunday from 9-3. I’ll be there pretty much ALL weekend, so come see me! A few of my quilts will be hanging in the show, including the woven version of my #encircledstarsquilt and another project I have been furiously working on behind the scenes - I can’t wait to reveal it to you this weekend! The featured artist this year is the wonderful @mollonsandra (please check her work out at www.sandramollonquilts.com). She is originally from our area and is an absolutely amazing appliqué and landscape artist. The Lilypad Quilt she made that’s featured on the flyer is almost photo-realistic. It’s incredible. And it’s also our opportunity quilt and will be raffled off on Sunday! I cannot wait to see more of her work featured in the show. 😍 I’m in charge of the raffle baskets this year and have received amazing donations from some of my favorite partners: @maywoodstudio, @thermoweb, @artgalleryfabrics, and @aurifilthread. Our members have also gone above and beyond to put together the most amazing prizes. It’s going to be so fun! Losing my dang mind right now. 🤯 If you have been around here for a minute, you know the Walk Books by @jacquietps have been my quilting bibles. These books made finishing my own quilts with my domestic machine completely doable. If you don’t have these books, please know that you NEED them. To be able to actually take a class with Jacquie is an absolute dream of mine and I can’t believe I got to check that off my list yesterday. 🤯 It has been a wonder to see her quilts in person, to get to hear her break down her techniques and listen to her process. Ya’ll are seeing a lot of my face lately. I’m torn between between being proud of myself and apologizing to you. 🤣🤣 This really takes some getting used to! But hey! My first challenge project as a #maywoodmaker is complete! Each Maker was given a few black and white fat quarters from the @maywoodstudio Solitaire fabric line and assigned a letter to spell out MAYWOOD MAKER - mine is D. We were given free rein to create a 12” block recreating our letter. I was inspired by a free coloring page I found online (I print these off for the kids to color all the time!) - swipe to the end to see! I decided to recreate the look of this page in a much simpler way using raw edge appliqué. It was a challenge using only black and white fabric, but I think there was enough contrast between the different monotone designs on each to work for me here. I have a mantra to go with this letter D: Do it. Jump in. Try all the things. Fail miserably and learn what you might do differently next time. 🙌 I have jumped into this whole-heartedly this year and it’s scary. But I love it. As a side note, my favorite “hack” for raw edge applique is to use Heat n Bond iron-on adhesive by @thermoweb. This comes in different strengths (and therefore stiffnesses), the “lite” is my favorite for quilts. It will soften with washing, and the edges will fray a bit. I used #aurifilthread Invisafil monofilament to zigzag the pieces on this project so there won’t be much fraying on this one. It’s important to remember a few things when using this: 1. Reverse your image and trace it onto the *paper* side of the adhesive. 2. Don’t use a heat-erasing pen to trace your drawing. Ask me how I know. 🤦‍♀️ 3. Adhere it to the *wrong* side of the fabric. I am getting some last minute fabric play time in this afternoon before I take off for QuiltCon super early tomorrow morning. 😍 Gah. I’m beyond excited. I’m working on laying out these gorgeous Lucca Essentials wovens from @diamondtextiles for my next #roadtrippinquilt - pattern to release sometime in late March. I still can’t get over how gorgeous these fabrics are, I’m super excited to have this quilt done for Easter, the colors are perfect! It’s beyond fun for me making matchy matchy outfits for the kids. I know this won’t last too much longer, so every time I get to do this is a blessing. And they absolutely have the best closets right now! 🤣😍 Okay, now for all the details on Emma’s sweet dress in the #agfevolve lookbook! This is the #llktreviso dress pattern by @littlelizardking. This view has the gathered bodice, cold-shoulder elbow sleeves, and the simple skirt length. I added a 6” ruffle to the bottom to make it more of a maxi length and let’s be honest, ruffles are what we do here. 🙌 Emma actually chose the Evolve Key Lime print from the collection herself (she never picks the one I think she will! 🤷🏼‍♀️) and I chose the Coneflower Hemlock print as a fun contrast for the sleeves and bottom ruffle. I’m so excited the #agfevolve lookbook is finally out! These prints by @suzyquilts for @artgalleryfabrics are so gorgeous, I love the saturated colors of this line, and the blues and greens are my favorites!! Okay, I want to talk about Connor’s outfit first. The shirt is the #thomasshirt by @felicitypatterns, I’ve made this several times for Connor now. It’s a perfect little boys shirt with a camp collar and if you look closely, you can see some pattern-matching magic on the pocket. 🥰 I used light blue plastic snaps instead of buttons, making it both easier on me to make (I still have a minor fear of buttons since my finger incident… 😳) and easier for Connor to put on himself. Win/win! I used the Diamond Stripe Key Lime print for this and it’s a perfect, I think I need to make my husband a matching one! His pants, though, are my favorite. These are the Grove Carpenter Pants pattern by @buckandbloompatterns and are the CUTEST little joggers! I adore the Tiny Moon Nova print for these! Now, quilting cotton is a little light weight, and I’d like these pants to last a little while (we are hard on knees around here). Recently @thermoweb sent me a bunch of samples of their products to try out. One of them was the #heatnbond Q2400 Soft Woven Interfacing. There was just enough provided to interface both pant legs and gave it a bit more body without stiffness. There is still a nice drape to the fabric and it’s super soft as a lining. I was able to squeeze out enough for the collar and facing of the shirt as well, and it worked really well. Swipe to see! Both of these pieces have been washed several times now, and while they do require ironing (all my quilting cotton stuff does!), they’ve held up really well. As a quilter, I don’t know a ton about garment fabrics, so it’s nice to be able to get quilting cotton to work for something like this! Here she is!! 😍😍 My @elbe_textiles #smithhoodie is complete! Pictures wearing this coming soon (like post more coffee and shower - it’s been a long week… 🤣). I am super duper proud of the fussy cutting/pattern matching I was able to do with my #romaquilt (pattern by @quiltdstudios). The front pocket was really the only piece that I couldn’t match up, so I flipped it and am showing off the beautiful birds on the backing (then I had to flip the hood to match too because that is what we do. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣). Again, this pattern is written for stretchy materials, so I did make some adjustments that were moderately successful. I widened the neck opening (I need to widen my next one a little more, it *barely* and I mean BARELY fits over my large melon… 🤣). I shortened the sleeves and length a bit to accommodate the ribbing on the cuffs and hem (I could have shortened them a bit more). This is my first time playing with ribbing and I probably just need more practice, but it seriously gave me fits. My serger gave up on me and I ended up having to zigzag it on with my Bernina - I will need to recover a bit before I try this again. 😅 BUT. I love the contrast of the dusty rose and I think the ribbing gives it a nice, finished look, I’m so glad I tried it. Okay, add this to the list of things I shouldn’t be doing right now, but I couldn’t resist! I’ve been seeing all these cool selvedge name tags pop up (thanks for the inspo @halfsquarehannah!) and I totally did not intend to make one (I don’t save selvedges and I actually kind of resent the fabric real estate they take up, as cute as they can be.. 🤷🏼‍♀️😅). But here we are. I actually went through my stash and snipped these letters out of my existing yardage. Someday I’ll open these up and wonder what the heck happened. 🤣 RSS definitely has the best fonts to select from but I had to scrounge for the C’s. Okay. I know I’ve been talking a lot about binding lately, but I just love finding ways to add a little touch of whimsy and fun to my least favorite part of the quilting process! 🤣 Binding is honestly the worst for me (I like it even less than basting a quilt on the floor… 😬) so I feel like adding a little something interesting helps me want to finish it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Don’t question my logic here, it is what it is… 🤣 This is a philanthropy quilt my guild put together that will be added to a themed basket to raffle off at our quilt show at the beginning of March. Donna from @featherbed_quilting used a beautiful panto to quilt this that mimics some of the shapes from the floral fabric, I just love it. And to take it up just one more notch, I decided to add a strip of ric rac around the quilt that peeks out under the binding for a fun little accent. I originally saw this on a binding tutorial I watched when I first started quilting (I cannot remember who though! 😬). I have done it a handful of times now, but it’s been awhile! I’m using this Vintage Trim ric rac by @beelori1 - it’s labeled as 3/8” trim - this is a bit confusing because it’s actually just about 3/4” wide, but I assume that the 3/8” is the height from the center to the edge. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I sew this down in 4 separate pieces along the front edge of the quilt using a very scant 1/4” seam allowance. I used a 2 1/4” wide binding (I probably should have stuck with my normal 2 1/2” as the trim adds a bit of width to the edge) and sewed it down to the front of the quilt just as I normally would. I used a slightly huskier 1/4” seam allowance to attach the actual binding to ensure that original seam on the trim is covered. I pressed only the binding out, folded it over to the back, and used a big stitch to finish it off with my favorite 12 wt. #aurifilthread in white. I adore how this turned out! My #wip - it weekend also included getting caught up with my #designermysterybom blocks 6, 7, and 8. How can it be that three months have passed since I finished the last quilt block?! 😅 This #bom is by the @fatquartershop and features the Summerside fabric collection by @thimbleblossoms for @modafabrics. The pinks and greens and blues in this collection are so gorgeous, and I love building my skills on these blocks! Block 6 (far right) is the Peony block designed by @figtreeandco. Block 7 (far left) is the Orchid block designed by @meandmysisterdesigns. Block 8 (center) is the Sunflower block designed by @sweetwaterfabric. This has been a #wip - it weekend for me and I’m loving it. I’m beyond excited to finally show you full looks at my makes for the #agfmixthevolume lookbook! @artgalleryfabrics does low volume fabrics like no one else, and I couldn’t wait to mishmash as many of these as I could together. I get instant vintage vibes from these projects and I love it! I am officially team “make a matching Balsam pillowcase for every quilt I plan on keeping” if that’s a thing. 😆 This pattern is by @sunflowerseams and the ruffle always makes it for me. New dress day for this sassy little thing. 😍💁‍♀️ I thought this #llkmackinacisland dress by @littlelizardking would be perfect both for this princess AND showing off these fun retro prints from the #drivindown9fabric collection by @lysaflower for @pbsfabrics! This is my second time making this dress for her and it’s still one of my favorite patterns - no buttons or plackets and the big bow in the back is such a gorgeous detail! Funny(ish) story. I cut this dress out for Emma back in October. Life happened and it got swept into a pile which got swept into a box that got put in a closet and out of sight for the holidays. 😬😬😬 I searched EVERYWHERE for these darn pieces and didn’t have enough fabric to recut them. 🤦‍♀️ Fast forward 4ish months and I unpack the box looking for something else and LO AND BEHOLD! I found them. I sewed this baby up over a couple of days and 😅 it still fits her. And it looks A-MAZING on her. And she loves it! This was the most fun I’ve had taking pictures with her in a WHILE. A very happy release day to the #artemisquilt pattern by @alderwoodstudio! This pattern is a joy to make. It’s rated as intermediate, but I think as long as you have your 1/4” seam allowance dialed in, an adventurous beginner could absolutely be successful with this one. Not sure what’s up with me and orange lately, but I love it! 🧡 Most of my blocks are done for my #artemisquilt top. This pattern is coming this week from @alderwoodstudio and it’s been such a fun make! Other than a few HSTs, there is not a ton of repetitive piecing here, which I LOVE in a pattern. There is a place in my heart for some of that mindless sewing sometimes, but this is not the pattern for that and I appreciate it. It’s raining outside. The kids are in the garage doing who knows what with their dad (bless him), my old boy Brody and I are snuggled up on the old recliner watching Pride and Prejudice (the Colin Firth PBS miniseries one - I love the Keira Knightley movie for a quick fix and the music - but when I’m settled in, this is my P&P go to) for the umpteenth time. I am finishing up my second project using the new 8 wt thread by @aurifilthread and @suzyquilts. This time hand-quilting the same pattern as I machine-quilted on my other sample and I’m so excited to see the contrast! The kids will come raging in momentarily I’m sure, and I’ll probably have to switch to football or Sesame Street at some point today, but right now, I’m enjoying this little bit of self-care with my pup and my project. 🥰 What is your version of self-care?
