Hyvää vappua! Let’s try this #memademay thing again. Today, the most noticeable part of my outfit is obviously not a me made, but the pants and the unseen parts are me mades. I’m taking part in the #brasewingbee2024 conference and last weekend I sewed my first bra, the #sahaarabra and I had completely forgotten what it feels like to not have my bra rub my skin raw and y’all it’s a pretty good feeling! There’s a pair of #kapundaundies under there and the pants are #cashmeretteashwoodpants and they make me feel like a Clydesdale in the best kind of way. I suspect that ehat I manage to talk about this May will be mostly surrounding basics. Apparently it’s May? Already? Are we sure? I mean I know it’s been a while since Christmas, but it still wet and cold, I have barely seen the sun or even been outside. I am in self-imposed isolation, not quite a lock down, but I am busy, so very busy: my sewing machines and I have barely paused for months. It’s all a bit hush hush for now. It's the 1st of May! (I've no idea how that's happened) But with that comes of course the first day of MeMadeMay! This morning I set my alarm for a little earlier to give myself time to focus on myself. I don't wear makeup every day, but taking the time to put some on always makes me feel better. Hoping I get used to the earlier mornings quickly as this morning I was so addled in the shower I started washing my body with conditioner 🤦🏼♀️. (And that was after having a night off from my usual disrupted nightshift with the baby). Thank goodness I'd set myself up a little mini studio in my shed quarters yesterday to make taking a pic every day easier. I love these dungarees, no one is surprised to see me starting with the #heydaydungarees from @wavesandwild. This pair is such a lovely soft canvas, they're showing some signs of wear now but I love this. I've paired them with another me made in the floral jersey top. I love these seemingly mad pairings, as I've got older I've realised I love the maximalist style... Both on me and in my home and I'm slowly but surely letting that style take over both. For a day at home with the baby these are wonderfully practical, comfy with lots of pockets but also super easy to breastfeed in. Perfect! #memademay2024

This is #donnyshirt number 5 and quite possibly my favourite. I have number 6 cut out too. I think the Donny Shirt is my favourite pattern ever (although now that I've made a patina blouse, that may take top spot) It's such a straightforward make and so easy to dress up or down and each one I've made is so different. When I finished this one I wasn't sure about it on the mannequin but I tried it on and fell in love 💕 it will be perfect for the spring and summer months. The fabric was amazing to work with and feels so nice. I made an Elodie wrap dress in it last summer for a wedding and had a small piece left over which I managed to squeeze this top and a Sew Over It silk cami out of. It’s the beginning of #memademay2024 and I’m excited about wearing #memade all month! I love wearing my handmade clothing and I’m looking forward to wearing things I’ve forgotten about or rarely wear, being brave and wearing those arty and flamboyant makes, and seeing where the gaps are in my handmade wardrobe. Taking the photos on a daily basis is more of a challenge. Usually I put a lot of time and effort into capturing beautiful photos of my makes, but when it’s everyday it’s not so easy, so I am hoping to find simpler ways of taking the photos. This one is in front of the door to my art studio. I’m wearing one of my favourite handmade dresses it’s the #mndarlingranges dress from @megannielsenpatterns in a denim chambray with a lace hem and pearl buttons. I’m still recovering from being ill and having surgery, but putting an effort in today with my outfit was uplifting. I got some gorgeous files from @designedinprayer a few weeks ago. Here are the first boyshorts made up from this amazing design; medium boyshorts with an extra high waist as per the customer’s request. Toile but make it wearable! I couldn’t work out which size top to make for the saguaro set, whether to add the ties or how low to make the v neck. My first entry for #memademay! This is Tie Top from @laraehandmade which I was delighted to pattern test last month. It’s a lovely pattern which was super easy and sewed up in just a few hours. It was a blessed relief to be honest to just cut out a pattern and sew it. With previous garments I’ve mocked up a toile for at least part of it and then adapted the pattern (often a lot!). As I was pattern testing I wanted to make it as it was to give useful feedback. I only sewed two ties to accommodate my indecently large bump and the most challenging part of the whole pattern has been working out how to tie them neatly. De stof komt van een stapel die mijn zus voor mij via via had geregeld. Ik wilde hem eerst nog doorgeven, soms zien stoffen er ‘los’ anders uit.. Maar toen kwam dit patroon voorbij en leek het mij wel leuk om die te maken in een harige variant 😁 En je hebt niet veel stof nodig, dus dat kwam precies goed uit! Het patroon komt uit @fibremood special no. 3. Ik hem hem in een M gemaakt, geen aanpassingen. Alleen de boord heb ik vastgestikt ipv met de hand. Hurray, hurray, it’s Me Made May! This year I plan to: • Wear clothes I have made every day. I will try to wear a different combination of clothes each day but that’s not something I want to hold myself to this year. • Take outfit photos every day if I can, accepting that mirror selfies are the easiest way for me to actually take a photo even if I like the idea of a photo outside. • Notice what clothes I feel best in, keeping a note on what it is that makes me feel good. • Share other people’s posts in my stories because Instagram has made it harder to follow the hashtags now. • Spend some time this month sewing. Day 1 of #memademay2024 So I thought I would start with something relatively easy. This #FGPeony is a KEEPER, with capital letters. It is the second one I have made, and won't be the last, I'm sure. But why exactly is it a keeper? Tonight's thinking is that these are the criteria (may be amended as the month goes on): ✔️ The style suits me (imho) ✔️ The fit is good ✔️ It works in the fabric I have chosen ✔️ It goes with other items in my wardrobe This Peony Dress ticks criteria 1, 2 and 3 and doesn't need to meet criteria 4 as it is an outfit all on its own (which is exactly why dresses are my favourite clothing item). 👗 But digging deeper (I did warn you this would happen), why does this dress tick the boxes, but the Merchant & Mills Florence dress, for example, did not? I think that the Peony Dress is a flattering style. Having curves and lacking height, I need styles that show I have a shape without showing exactly what that shape is, if you know what I mean. 😂 The Peony has clean lines, skims over curves without clinging tight, and gives a 'balanced' silhouette. It's just occurred to me that the Peony helps create the illusion of an hourglass shape.⌛️ What do you think? A couple of sweatshirts I updated using old flannels, thermals, and some patches! My mom is going to be in Minnesota for a few days and needed a few slightly warmer shirts for some time at the lake with her sister, so I thought it would be fun to try some repurposing from a bag of potential donations. The first two sweatshirts started from some dresses I had that were too hot and heavy for me. I used some flannel material and a bit from a couple thermal shirts to make the star and heart shapes (my mom did request the patch in the middle of the heart, though.) The second sweatshirts had Bambi graphics on them, so I used some denim pockets from a too-small pinafore dress to cover it up. Finally, I used the sleeves from the thermal shirts (that I used in the shapes of the first sweatshirts) to add some color-blocked sleeves. 🧵🪡
It's that time of year again - #MeMadeMay! I struggled to think of a pledge for this year. I'm actually pretty happy with my #memadewardrobe at the moment. I've already identified the gaps in my wardrobe and have plans to make things to fill them. I'm regularly wearing my me-mades and not just saving them for special occasions. And finally, I've started to develop a good idea of patterns that do and don't work for me. So my pledge this year is simply going to be to take joy in my sewing and me-made garments and to celebrate my me-made wardrobe by wearing them as many days as I can this month. #memademay24 & #seatedmakeschallenge2024 1 May Yay!! It’s first of May in the Southern Hemisphere so it’s time for Me Made May and this year I’m including Seated Makes Challenge. Every year, the Sydney Shirt Dress makes an appearance. This is such a good everyday dress. In fact, I think this is on my make-again list. I would add the pockets next time and lengthen it as well so it falls a bit below my knees. Definite keeper. Size: Made the Medium but would size up or grade for my hips as it’s a bit snug now. My measurements 38B:33W:40H (Hips go up to 50”) Fabric: This was a promotion that I did for Sew to Grow for their fabric range. It’s a rayon but in a slightly heavier weight. Pattern is for woven fabric. Happy #memademay2024 ! On this first day, I’m wearing 3 me made pieces. 1. My #SylvanJacket, which became an instant favourite and I wear it all the time. 2. A #seamworkrooney, that is a quiet hero in my closet and every time I wear it, I wonder why I haven’t made one in every colour. 3. The purpose of my challenge this year, a pair of #ChanterellePants that I rarely choose to wear, but have every potential to become favourites. I have 3 pairs of pants of this pattern, and I love it. However, I totally forgot to prewash this fabric, and it shrunk into a kinda twisted form in the first wash, and also made them shorter than intended. So I think of them as a bit of a failed project, but now that I am actually wearing them, they feel pretty good! 🌱Happy release day @twigandtale 🌱 The Ridgeway Shirt pattern is now available but I was lucky enough to get my hands on it early as part of the Sew & Show team! I absolutely loved sewing this pattern. In this house we are always looking for ways to make clothes sensory friendly and the fully enclosed crossover front alongside French seams makes for a garment that’s as beautiful inside as out, and scratchy seam free. I decided to sew the shirt in my favourite @merchantandmills black linen and I’m so pleased with how it turned out; gorgeous and soft and light for summer days, but equally easily slipping into evening wear territory - a perfect combo in my book! Because the internal facings are fully hidden, I was able to add a little whimsy with secret bees! I’ve been holding onto some scraps of this Rose & Hubble cotton poplin for ages and it was awesome to get to use them up. Clothes should be fun, and this addition really makes me smile! Twig & Tale perfectly balance the line of knowing, and opening admitting, that sewing can be hard, while holding your hand and guiding you gently through the process, making even the more complicated utterly achievable. The crossover may seem daunting, but once you’ve got your hands on the very clear instructions, backed up by an excellent video sew along, it comes together in no time - just don’t skip the basting! Not only are their patterns beautiful and well made, but every pattern I make from T&T teaches me something new. This time it was a different way to add side splits which I have already used again twice in commissions! I was given this pattern for free to sew up and share my experience and help spread the news!
