Burmese Chicken Salad and Fried Pork Balls from @burmalicious_by_suu . #aroundtheworldin80dishes has traveled to Myanmar aka Burma this month. Burma is situated between China, Thailand, and India so you know the foods will have aspects of those cuisines as well. This chicken salad is sour, salty, spicy, and sweet in that order (the way I made it) and a textural experience! The dressing is similar to the Thai prik nam pla with lime and fish sauce. It differs from it in that the Burmese dressing has garlic oil instead of raw garlic. In fact, I don’t know of any fresh Thai sauces with oil in them. I used chicken breast instead of skin-on bone-in thighs because that’s what I had. I poached the chicken gently in water with lemongrass, shallots, garlic, and ginger. So flavourful!I’ve finally learned how not to poach the hell out of chicken breasts so the meat was so tender. I’m going to use the resulting broth in a congee-esque dish. I can taste it now! The pork balls were a cinch to throw together with garlic, lemongrass, ginger, shallots, fish and oyster sauces, and cilantro though i just realized now that I forgot to add the paprika and onion per the recipe. Oops. I’ll just have to make it again! No complaints there. @hungryfinnja loved it - he said it had so much flavour. He was like a little kid eating his favourite foods. He was cracking me up tonight as we watched this series on Netflix called Paranoid and the Quaker lady offered to make the cop guy some fried eggs with halloumi. @hungryfinnja chortled when the cop guy said he didn’t know what it was because Eric knew by virtue of being married to moi. I made a second @ellieandmac_patterns Tiffany Tranquil Tank Top. I messed up when I was cutting the front bodice and accidentally cut it with the stretch going up and down. It's dbp, so it still had a little stretch horizontally, but not enough. As a fix, I added a strip of fabric down between the side seams (last pic!) It worked beautifully and I love this new top. I'll definitely be wearing it a bunch this summer. Japan, Day 2 - We started our day our day at the Shibuya Sky tower and then visited the Kanno Hachimangu Shrine and the Tofukauji Temple. I missed having a tour guide, or at least data, because it felt like I lacked context for what I was seeing at the shrine and temple. We went to the Starbucks at the Shibuya Crossing - said to be the busiest crossing in the world - for a good view and, of course, a drink. It's hot and humid. Finding something to drink is an ongoing goal. I've only seen one water fountain. Finally, we went to our sushi making class at . I'm a natural at making the little rice balls you start with, according to the teacher. It's a cool process because your right and left hands have specific jobs to do on their own - no using both hands to make the ball or making the bottom indent with the right hand. We were taught to put Wasabi in the sushi as we made it, which was new to me. They were set up to take pictures of the chefs (us) in traditional tops while holding the sushi. 5 quick tips for sewing with rayon challis (without tearing your hair out): Rayon challis is one of my fave fabrics. It’s cool, drapey, and comes in tons of good prints. I recently made the #seamworkchantelle in rayon, and absolutely love it. But its soft and fluid hand can cause problems too. Here are 5 easy things you can do to make sewing with this summery fabric a breeze: ✅ Always pre-wash. In the last image above 👆 you can see the amount of shrinkage when we washed and dried a 5 inch square of fabric on warm. That shrinkage adds up! Pre-wash your fabric in the same way you’ll wash your garment. (@lindseykelly recommends drying 3 times in the comments, to be safe!) ✅ Iron on medium heat. Rayon challis can get those unsightly shine marke if your iron is too high. You can also use a press cloth for more protection. ✅ Use a rotary cutter. Challis can shift easily, and a rotary will help you keep it on grain while cutting. ✅ Use a light interfacing only. A nice sheerweight or knit interfacing (my personal favorite) will match the drape of the fabric. ✅ Use a brand new needle. Challis can snag! Throw out that dull needle and start fresh (a 70/10 usually works perfectly). A free pattern from @thelittlepomegranate . I wish I had seen this earlier as it is such a great beginner pattern. The level of detail and explanations of sewing terms on the pattern is fantastic. I especially love the pocket bag construction, so easy and it created nice deep pockets. As I'm new to the skirt world, I'm not quite sure how to style it but I thought this linen Gap button-down did the trick. I have some fabric leftover, so I think this skirt definitely calls for a matching top, maybe the #noratank ? Food prep for bro and family. Made a small batch of lemon/blueberry jam and used to make swirl buns. Made a few cinnamon as I ran out of jam. . Bro also requested beans and sausage. Mom worked all her life and used to make this when time was short. Not the healthiest back then, but widowed, working, with kids, you do your best to provide and she more than did.
