***GASTROSKOPIE #1*** Wir alle wissen, dass Magenerkrankungen bei unseren Pferden mittlerweile keine Seltenheit mehr ist. Ob Sportpferd, Freizeitpferd oder Jungpferd - jedes Pferd kann betroffen sein. Die Behandlung ist oft langwierig und frustrierend für alle Beteiligten! Umso mehr freuen wir uns, dass sich in diesem Fall die aufwendige Behandlung gelohnt hat! Die erste Gastroskopie zeigte teils blutige Läsionen in der drüsenlosen Schleimhaut, Läsionen an der Umschlagfalte und im Bereich des Magenausgangs. Es folgte eine medikamentöse Therapie sowie eine Haltungs- und Fütterungsoptimierung. Bei der Kontroll-Gastroskopie zeigte sich leider keine deutliche Verbesserung. Die Medikamente wurden umgestellt und an ein paar weiteren Schrauben gedreht um das Wohlbefinden des Patienten zu verbessern. Und was sollen wir sagen - die Bilder sprechen für sich! Bei der zweiten Kontrolle waren die Schleimhautläsionen abgeheilt, lediglich am Magenausgang sind noch leichte Veränderungen sichtbar. All die Mühe hat sich gelohnt! Natürlich ist das alles nur möglich wenn alle an einem Strang ziehen! Die größte Leistung hat in diesem Fall die Besitzerin erbracht - die Koordination der Medikamentengabe, Futterumstellung und vieles mehr! Und natürlich auch die Bereitschaft den Erfolg der Therapie zu kontrollieren. Horses do not have the cognitive ability to be naughty. This was taken on the walk to the vets because she had been getting progressively worse in behaviour ending on Friday with rearing and broncing. This is a face of a horse who's uncomfortable and in pain, shortly after this she went to bite me, that was not naughty. We personify horses too much and we have to move away from saying they are just being naughty. Horses play up due to anticipation, excitement (adrenaline), stress and pain (just to name a few) when behaviour changes happen look at external factors first. This is a horse who has grade 3 squamous ulcers not naughty. I'm grateful she will tell me when something is wrong and she will never be made to ride through it. I see so many people post horses displaying undesirable behaviour and just saying how naughty they are. I am once again here to praise this product! We had a jumping horse who had no ulcers, but always seemed to be “off or backwards”. This horse had the potential to be top-notch, but his attitude was honestly terrible. After using Ponease Ulc fix on another horse and seeing clear results (he’s now on Ulc maintenance to keep the ulcers away), we decided to try the Ulc maintenance on this horse as well. The difference has been astounding. We started giving it to him before every ride, and if he wasn’t being ridden, we would give it before his evening meal. This has completely transformed him. He is no longer uptight, difficult, or resistant. We even took him to a show and he performed better than we could have hoped for. I am now optimistic about this horse’s promising future. If your horse feels off, it could be due to acid splashes bothering them while riding. Despite giving him hay and chaff before riding, this product has made all the difference for him. Eigentlich ist die Bezeichnung irreführend. Wir sprechen eher von Magenschleimhautreizungen, -entzündungen bis hin zu Ulzerationen (also Verlusten der intakten Magenschleimhaut). Hier ein paar Key Facts aus der heutigen Fortbildung: - Weidehaltung bewahrt unsere Pferde leider nicht unbedingt vor Magenerkrankungen - Auch Isländer sind anfällig für EGUS (Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome); entgegen der landläufigen Meinung, solche eher robust gehalteneren Rassen sind davor geschützt - Es gibt oftmals nicht DIE Therapie der Wahl - Manchmal muss man die Stellschraube der Dosierung drehen, da es in manchen Fällen sinnvoll ist, 2x täglich Gastrogard (oder Generika) zu verabreichen - Gastrogard am besten auf nüchternen Magen ca. 1 h vor Fütterung - Es gibt Pferde, bei denen Protonenpumpenhemmer (Gastrogard) oder andere Therapieansätze nicht anschlagen, so genannte Non-Responder u.v.m. 6 weeks ago Boris was diagnosed with grade 3/4 pyloric Ulcers after an extended period of sleep deprivation that was causing him to collapse from exhaustion. Today we scoped CLEAR! Honestly the stress I’ve had over the past 6 weeks has been insane, after doing some google research and looking on different forums I was preparing myself for the worst at his re scope. Pyloric ulcers are notoriously difficult to treat and reading so many stories of horses that took 3 or 4 rounds of medication, or simply just not responding at all, I dreaded today. Boris is uninsured and I’m a recently single mum of two kids who is newly self employed. The treatment course isn’t cheap for one course let alone several, the idea that I might not be able to fix him from a financial point of view has weighed on me terribly. We are so lucky that the one course made a dent let alone completely clearing him. Obviously there was management and dietary changes made as well but even with everything there are owners out there with well over £6K in vet’s fees trying to beat this. I’ve got to look at long term management now to keep them from coming back which seems to be a minefield with lots of conflicting opinions. As long as Boris is happy that’s what matters though. Did you know that January is Equine Gastric Ulcer Awareness Month? Gastric ulcer disease is common in foals and horses and the term Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) has been used to describe this disease because of its many causes and complicated nature. Prevalence estimates have been reported to range from 25 to 50 percent in foals and 60 to 90 percent in adult horses, depending on age, performance, and evaluated populations. The diagnosis of EGUS is based on the presence of clinical signs and confirmation with endoscopic examination. Signs in horses include poor appetite or failure to consume a meal, dullness, attitude changes, poor appetite, decreased performance, reluctance to train, poor body condition, rough hair coat, weight loss, excessive recumbency, and low-grade colic. A presumptive diagnosis of EGUS can be made on these typical clinical signs and response to therapy. A definitive diagnosis can only be made using a video or endoscope.
