Genuine question—I don’t know the answer. Are our red light therapy pads also stimulating acupuncture points and providing acupressure to horses? The lightbulbs assert pressure similar to my acupressure wrist band (last picture). Does anyone have info on this? Hypotheses? Research studies? I’m curious!
🐎 Kinesiology Taping 🐎 How effective is the use of kinesiology tape on horses? Many practitioners claim that the humble kinesiology tape (often referred to as KT) pretty much fixes everything. That is not quite true, however studies have shown that KT has incredible effects when used correctly. ✅ One study has looked at KT used on the abdominal muscles of the horse during ground work exercises such as lunging. It resulted in significantly improved movement and showed that these types of tapings can be vital in a rehab or training program. ❌ Another study looked at KT used for forelimb tendon and ligament rehabilitation. This study ended up being inconclusive and not enough proof was found to support that KT should be recommended as part of rehabilitation for these types of issues. ✅ A third study showed significant reduction in swelling in post-operative horses that were taped with a method used to remove fluid and reduce swelling. It supports the use of KT for reduction of swelling and I can say that I have myself used these techniques with fantastic results. As you can see, kinesiology taping for horses is an amazing modality, for certain targeted concerns. It should be used with care and consideration and applied by a skilled and passionate practitioner that is willing to admit to its limitations. It is not a quick fix and not a one-size-fits-all solution. I love this modality and have seen incredible results when used correctly. #equinekinesiologytaping #equestrian #horseriding #equine

ULCERS! Part 2. Yesterday, I posted photos of what ulcers can look like inside the horse. Often, if the horse is too uncomfortable, it is not possible to apply kinesiology tape to the abdomen. So what can we do to ease their discomfort? For horses that are suffering from ulcers, I will always look at areas of compensation. Generally, they hold themselves stiff through their low back because of the discomfort they are experiencing in their abdomen. Step 1. Apply a decompression strip or 2 to the lumbosacral junction. The aim is to relieve pressure over that site. I love using the 4 inch wide Hestaband Cotton as it has good elasticity and does not stabilize the area as Satin would. Step 2. Add additional strips of Hestaband Lymph to encourage circulation on either side of the spinous processes. I keep the application simple. Adding too much tape may overwhelm the horse and be counter productive to the therapeutic goals. ULCERS ULCERS ULCERS! Years ago, we rarely heard of a horse being diagnosed with ulcers. New studies are saying that 50 % of foals have ulcers and 90% of some performance horses have ulcers. What causes these painful lesions? Some things to consider are: * Changes in environment, diet, feed, stress levels, work load, medications Signs to look for: *Poor appetite, weight loss, repetitive mild colic, unwillingness to perform, attitude or behavior changes Consult with your veterinarian if you suspect ulcers. Since we’re approaching derby weekend and the start of racing and show season here in Minnesota, it’s a perfect time to revisit this topic. And I know that I probably sound like a broken record, but I will continue to refer to our horses as athletes until we all see them that way! What do these photos have in common? They are of athletes wearing Kinesiology Tape (except for the first photo - showing the results of a weave pattern applied over a bruise. You can see where the tape was applied and how the bruise healed under it). We don't question its use in humans - yet so many people (& professionals) in our industry question the use and effectiveness of it in horses. What is Kinesiology Tape (often called KT Tape), and how does it work? The technical explanation is that the tape stimulates mechanoreceptors (nerve endings), resulting in fewer nociceptors (pain receptors) that can fire, thus naturally reducing pain. The tape connects with the nervous system by gently lifting the skin. This creates subcutaneous space, changing pressure in the area under the skin. That change and space enhance the flow of lymphatic fluids. The tape promotes circulation and can improve blood flow in the skin. The tape is proven to aid in muscle re-education AND improve performance by supporting fatigued muscles. It is designed to mimic the elasticity in the skin; therefore, it does not restrict the range of motion. It’s a natural and effective way to support joints and muscles, relieve pain and inflammation, prevent injuries, and speed up recovery. Yesterday I attended a kinesiotaping workshop with the very knowledgeable Mel from @melt_lymphatics! I’ve always had an interest in taping because of my dodgy joints, and when Mel introduced me to the idea of trying it on horses I was super interested, having already experienced the benefits myself! Safe to say this is a modality I’ll definitely be offering once I’m all set up and ready to go!

To avoid “stocking up” or edema after strenuous exercise or showing, there are several things I do with my own horses. 1. Wraps- compression helps stop fluid buildup 2. Handwalking- movement helps evacuate fluid 3. Kinesiology Tape- decompressing channels towards lymph node aggregates speeds the evacuation of built up fluid. My lower-leg regimen is quite a detailed routine. It’s taken years of trial and error to find what works best for my horses. Hickory hurt her hip somehow a few weeks ago (I'm assuming she fell or banged it on something). With the help of my handy stash of horse herbs, the heat and swelling has gone way down but is still lingering so I asked for taping recommendations on a Facebook group. This one was the most recommended and I finally was brave enough to try it today 😅 I must say, I'm super pleased with how it turned out because this was my first attempt at taping and it is definitely a more complex application. I want to share something with you... This was one of my original taping applications. I had just completed my training with Dr. Sybille Molle at the Animal Rehab Institute in Florida. It was the first time her course had been offered in the USA and I was the first Canadian to take this training. This photo was taken when I came back to Canada in April of 2013. However, taping was not a skill that came natural to me. As I often tell my students, I had more tape stuck in my own hair than I did on the horses! It took a lot of practice and patience. I taped every single day to be comfortable with applying it. I must have used up dozens of rolls before I finally was confident in doing smaller applications. But I believed in the principle of kinesiology taping. I believed it was going to help a lot of horses and dogs (and now pigs, flamingos, ground hogs, cats etc.). I am very blessed for clients who are always willing to let me use their trusted companions for my case studies to continue my education. Within the past year, I have one in particular who has been a participant of all 4 separate studies! And because of this, he has received consistent bodywork on him for 8 months now. I am able to adjust our session plans to fit what he needs regularly. Some modalities have worked better for him than others. And that's okay! As bodyworker, I need both the horse's feedback & the owner's. Communication is key to finding the right plan that fits your horse's needs. Case in point, if you look closely, each of these k-tape applications have slight variations. Each strip has a purpose. The goal is to bring comfort & support to a limb that has ringbone. The combination of this with cold laser has shown a huge increase in his comfort level, especially on uneven footing. I do want to stress that this horse has a fabulous care TEAM. He has a knowledge owner who ensures he has a strong team of advocates for his care. He has a vet that understands a wholistic view of horse well-being. He has a skilled farrier who keeps his feet in great shape. He has a chiropractor who keeps him adjusted. I am just a small piece to in his overall wellness care. TAPING FOR LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE: When a fan taping may not be enough.... It is possible that with acute injury cases you may require a much broader taping application. If the soft tissue damage is great, the edema may cover a large area of the horse's body. This can occur from a kick, muscle tear or trauma from a blunt force. We may need to evacuate a large amount of fluid to assist with pain reduction and improve range of motion. Therefore, a fan taping may not always be the preferred application. It is important to have the treating veterinarian check heart, lung, liver and kidney functions to ensure all contraindications have been ruled out. Then we can be confident the horse can systemically handle a broader application. We would not want to use an application if either of those systems are compromised. When applying your tape, think of pulling the edema away from the injury site and towards the heart. Remember that there are superficial and deep lymphatic pathways. These pathways will either reroute the excess fluid to be filtered and recirculated through the body or processed out through micturition. Like this article? Why, as a community, are we so afraid to be different? Why, are we so hesitant to question traditional methods? Increase the severity of a bit. Ride out the bucks. Restrictive equipment. Add more leverage. Forced headsets. Blocking tails. The list goes on. Why, are these practises so easily accepted, but the idea that less is actually more often shut down? I remember when I was younger, being questioned why I was so set on using less tack, using different approaches, and why I spent so much time in hand. My answer was simple: I wanted to know if we could. I remember being questioned why I paid for a chiropractor to come out and treat him, and why I spent so much time learning to massage him on my own. Why would I want to restrict HD's headset, when I could achieve the same thing without a harsh bit? without tying his face down? Why would I want to force a movement, when instead I could reward him for trying to understand it on his own? Why wouldn't I pay for bodywork or learn to do it myself when he was showing signs of discomfort or restricted movement? My question to those who are so against challenging different methods: Why not? What is the harm to learning softness without force? What is the harm in having a horse investigated for pain, instead of passing it off as a bad behaviour? What is the harm in learning something new? A K-taping success story! I met the lovely Misty last year following months on box rest due to steroid induced laminitis. She had dropped down through her hind fetlocks whilst she was taking the weight off her front feet. After a discussion with her owner, we decided to try k-taping her fetlocks to encourage Misty into a better posture. I visited Misty again about 12 weeks later and pleased to see that the inverse rotation had been reversed and she displayed a much improved posture 🥳 her vet was also pleased with her progress and commented on the benefit of k-taping. However, it is mainly down to Misty's owner that she has made such a great recovery. She has been so dedicated to her rehab and followed advice from her vet and farrier too, so it has been a real team effort getting this lovely mare back on the road 💪 ❗️Annoyingly, i do not have very good before and after pictures 🤦♀️ the first one does not show the true extent of how low her fetlocks were and my second picture Misty is not even stood in the same posture 🙈 but i will include them anyway! Beware of all these before and after pictures on social media claiming huge differences between the two- the majority of the time the horse is not even stood in the same position between the two pictures and this can greatly influence posture! * Important Update * Unfortunately, I have recently torn my rotator cuff, and while thankfully it is a relatively small tear, I will need to be a little extra careful while letting it heal for the next little while. This means, I will need to be a little more selective on the horses I will be treating. In result, I may need to end sessions a little earlier, or end a session altogether if the reactivity of the horse increases to a point that I am not able to follow them. As many of you know, reactive horses hold a special place in my heart, and I will continue to work with them the best I can - however, I may need to take a slight step back until I can properly work with them again. * Please note: the price of a session will be altered if we need to end a session early. * Thankfully, being a Physiotherapy Assistant, I work in the right place to get my shoulder back on the right track and will continue to work to find ways to keep doing what I love to do effectively and efficiently! It's foaling season! The majority of the foals I treat are veterinary referrals.
