🌊💦 Hydrotherapy: Water Treadmill vs Swimming Hydrotherapy involves using water to aid in rehabilitation and fitness. This can be in the form of swimming, water treadmill or cold water spa 💧All modalities have their pros & cons however I personally will always recommend WTM over swimming. WHY? ✅ SAFETY: Both come with risks however swimming poses a serious risk of drowning! If an accident should happen using WTM the horse can be quickly evacuated ✅ CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT: WTM settings can be easily tailored to suit the horses needs. Speed, depth, incline can be altered weather its for rehab or fitness purposes. More advanced WTM machines have filtration systems to keep the water clean and at a constanct temperature. Swimming pools are often stagnant and need to be drained and cleaned manually ✅ BODY POSTURE: We all know that adopting the ‘long & low’ body posture during exercise over ground is most beneficial for overall health. We all desire spinal flexion and recruitment of the abdominal muscles. Why would we try and achieve a completly inverted and unhealthy posture during swimming?? The horse needs to keep its head above water to breath during swimming. High head carriage and hollow back causes hyper tension in the neck and potentisl damage to Thoracic & Lumbar muscles Side note on Hydrotherpist qualification - As like so much of the equine industry, its very inregulated. Any person can install hydrotherapy facilities and offer their services without any formal training 🤯 THIS IS SCARY. So much damage can be done if not used correctly! When Bright Star Ranch opened, I was asked if equine therapy was something I was interested in I immediately said yes. At that point I had not been on a horse in YEARS. #sidesaddlesaturday! Ozzy and I had our first ever sidesaddle lesson today and I couldn’t stop smiling 🥰 As Ozzy can be a little sensitive to being heavy on his back, I was very unsure how he would react today; but my littler superstar proved that I overthink everything once again, because he was perfect. Our instructor @penny_clarke_side_saddle was definitely very kind to us as she said that I had a natural position and Ozzy had the perfect confirmation for side saddle (he’s quite long). Surprisingly, on our first go, Penny had us cantering and I can’t wait to go back! To celebrate Mothers Day this year, Mothers Nest and Lennox Head Equestrian have teamed up to create an opportunity for new mums to connect with one another and our horses, at the paddock in Skennars Head. During the first half of this, ‘For the mums’ session we will host a sharing circle. This is designed to facilitate connections with other women who have similar aged children (under 2) and are adjusting to the new experiences and feelings associated with motherhood. In the second half of the session, participants are invited to interact with the horses through observation of equine behaviours, and hands on activities like grooming and natural horsemanship groundwork exercises. We encourage participants to bring along some morning tea and a picnic rug for this relaxed and grounding experience. Bubs are welcome, and the horses will be kept in a seperate yard during the session, to ensure everyone’s safety. This ‘For the mums’ session will be held on Friday the 17th of May, from 9:30-11:30am. The price is $50 and bookings are essential. Horses are born with an innate desire to be part of a herd. A lone horse does not last long in the wild, becoming an easy target for predators. It needs the protection of the whole herd to increase its chances of survival. We are also born with an innate desire to be part of the tribe (herd). To be part of our herd means that we are a valued member and our herd needs our unique contribution to flourish. The sense of being needed encourages a healthy self-image and an increased desire to be of service. Every one of us privately longs to be valued, to be of service and have an identity in our greater community. The instinct to contribute is so deeply rooted, if we listen deeply, we can feel this drive deep in our body and in our subconscious mind. There is nothing more satisfying than contributing to others and feeling valued. We wonder, “Am I doing a good job?” When our leaders or elders tell us we are needed and what we have to offer is important and unique, we thrive. When we are not offered feedback that we’re doing good work, we lose confidence in ourselves. A resentful horse or a disgruntled employee is the embodiment of an individual who has lost their sense of value. They are not sure if they are needed any more. They do their work but deep down doesn’t feel like they are a part of the herd. Being of value is vitaly important, whether you are a parent, child, leader of a team or horse owner.
