Urban3 Just Accounting: Executive Summary Designed by Show And Tale Creative × @rhiannonelizabeth During the summer of 2022, I was contacted to design a report examining inequities in property valuations and tax codes. In contradiction to my brief and oversimplified description, the report was extremely robust, and it was something I was extremely excited to be part. Housing policies and the historical importance of housing in America is something that I've studied in my own time and is a topic I'm knowledgeable about, so to get my hands on a job like this was a major milestone for me. As I neared the final approval process of the report, having about 95% of it done, it was abruptly shelved for political reasons. I must state that this was not the fault of the client, and they were nothing short of incredible to work with. Due to the fact that the report studies and design were funded through a grant, the benefactor had final say of its release, and decided that it shouldn't be released to the public. Legally, this executive summary is all I'm allowed to show. In its final form, the report focused on 18 Western North Carolina counties, and ended up being over 140 pages. This was the second collaboration with @rhiannonelizabeth , and is something I am extremely proud of. We created great work that I wish we could share fully, not because I want another portfolio piece—though, that'd be nice—but because the work itself was so important for people to get their hands on. None of the work Rhiannon specifically created—illustrations, diagrams, charts, and graphs—is allowed to be shown, which doubly sucks. In the end, it's the people who really suffer because this was a major weapon in the fight for some fair housing policies. I plan on releasing this executive summary on my website through a blog and making it available for download, but due to the legalities of all of this, I have to be extra careful with how I write about it, not only for myself, but for all parties involved in the making of this report. What I can say is that while I was aware of the, let's say political sensitivities, of this kind of work, it was still eye opening to experience it firsthand.
