Thank you for all the big hellos this week, it’s been lovely! 🙏 A little introduction – hi, I’m Lucy. It was humbling to be asked to do a fireside chat recently to talk about my context, career and what lights me up. Here it is, in short, as an introduction to who I am – swipe right for 15 secs of rapid imagery. 🤣 I come from a business owner mother and scientist father, and a family of 6ft behemoths. I eat muesli for breakfast. I love traditional Italian pizza. The Archibald-winning portrait of Margaret Olley by Ben Quilty is my favourite. Margaret Preston and Margaret Olley are my all time favourite artists. I’m obsessed with flowers and love to grow them – because rituals are important. Paul Kelly and Aretha Franklin are my favourite musicians of all time. Good Will Hunting is my favourite film. I’m 34. I have worked as a designer at JCDecaux, freelance, Mullo Studio, The University of Queensland and now here I am. I learnt from the biggest brands in the world at JCDecaux, about business ownership at Mullo, and branding at scale and leadership at UQ. I’m inspired by those who challenge the status quo by leading with compassion and empathy. I’m obsessed with the library and brands that create their own libraries. By doing this they’re telling the world that knowledge is at their core, and that, everyone is welcome here. Smart. A long overdue post…. You might have noticed we had new staff join us in Semester 2. First up introducing Theo Inglis. Theo is a freelance graphic designer and design writer. His debut book on design history, Mid-Century Modern Graphic Design, was published by Batsford in May 2019. He was a contributor to Type Directory, published by Thames & Hudson in 2019 and worked as a freelance reporter for Grafik magazine and Monotype, the world’s leading font company. He has written for AIGA’s Eye on Design, It’s Nice That, Communication Arts magazine, Creative Review, the Financial Times, Computer Arts and the Recorder. Freelance clients have included Pentagram, Penguin Random House, The Poetry School, openDemocracy and a wide variety of independent literary and radical publishers. (1/10) 🔗🧰 In the past few days, I’ve decided to revisit my studies in Japanese typography, but with a fun approach. Before fully committing to type design professionally, I used to play around with translating Latin letters into Japanese without clinging to typographic traditions or consulting native Japanese perceptions. This often led to serious legibility issues and, at times, true typographic aberrations. However, this time around, I’m willing to take that risk and would like to share it with all of you! And so, this new series begins here. The drawn letters may (or may not) evolve into a complete family eventually, but for now, they’re just loose ideas. To start off, I drew inspiration from the Grecian style to create my first experiment.
