From a completely trashed hood to ready to poly prime. A decent amount of parts of this hood had to be hand fabbed to correct previous “repairs”. This tractor is going in the Perryville museum as a memorial to the old caretaker. Had to make sure this was nice enough to be worthy of a memorial. Seeing something fully filler corrected is my favorite look. This takes a LOT of time and technical planning to stay efficient and cut out back tracking, especially when doing stepped body lines. Well, she may not be much to look at, they seldom are at this point, but the bodywork on the driver’s side fender is done. As tempting as it may be to mask and shoot it in a couple coats of epoxy and spray filler, I’m going to wait until the passenger’s side is done to this same point first. On an unrelated note, I think I may have picked my upper two tone color today. It’s a very dark high metallic grey, almost black. I picked up a pint of it, and will test it out on a couple of sprayout cards and the mirrors soon. The picture of the paint on the lid is under the sun gun, to replicate seeing it under bright, direct sunlight. This extremely dark grey will be paired with Viper Blue Pearl as the second and probably lower color. Rollin along on this dentside crew cab Got all the polyester work completed on the cab........that's a BIG roof. Sprayed it all in polyester primer Touched up the pinholes and guidecoat sprayed. Next up is bedline the underside and start on the fenders and hood. So, back to the hood and header panel again. Yes, as usual I have many irons in the fire at the same time. A whole ton of work has been done since last posting on it. The #evercoat slicksand blocked out beautifully, but I found the driver’s side of the header panel where it transitions into the scoop area to be too tall when compared to the other side. Like 3/16” too tall. 😮 Unacceptable. So I made a cardboard pattern of the header profile off of the passenger’s side, overlaid it on the driver’s side, and spray bombed the excess material bright yellow for visibility. This was all the extra material that needed to be removed. Hours and hours of block sanding and gallons of sweat later with 40 grit again, I finally had the excess removed and all without altering the curvature or shape thankfully. The other two things that needed correction were the wobbly center peak line (which got corrected with careful block sanding), and the lack of definition on the upper outside radiuses. A little additional material here got that back into shape. Then it was mask again, this time on the car, and apply another 2 1/2 coats of slicksand to the worked areas. After it was unmasked, 2 full rounds of block sanding, one with 120 grit, and another with 220 grit got it looking aces again. This weekend I was able to get the tops of the fenders and doors prepped, all the surfaces cleaned, and the car masked up yet again, but this time for the final stage: regular high build primer surfacer. Once this is sprayed, the bodywork on the hood and header panel will officially be done until final paint prep.
