I’ve been a bit quiet with the posts recently - but that’s because I’ve been doing the wiring and that not pretty till it’s all done. The Spitronics Micro Ignitions cc loom is all done. The Hardwire Electronics pdm is pretty much finished. Just the Link ECU wiring to do. However I’ve finally got the final head bolt for the engine. Not from Tuning Developments Ltd yet - but from the legend Dave Firman who sent me one of his from his spare engine to get me going. So that’s all fitted and we can move forward. I whipped off the turbo manifold to drill the thermocouple port, then refitted that, bolted it all up and got the engine ready. Also fitted the Funk Motorsport manifold blankets. I’ve shortened the final oil feed so that jobs done. For the transmission I’ve changed the sump gasket, fitted the mount, cooler take offs, and pressure sensor - making that ready to go. Next job will be to bolt them together and get it in the car! Only two weeks till Japshow so fingers crossed! I attempted to race this past weekend but failed. It was pretty darn cold here in Ohio so I let the car warm up in grid for a long time to bring up oil temperatures. That created a new problem as my throttle cable melted to the liner. The header proximity to this cable has always been a concern to me. I had it wrapped with two layers of insulating and reflective tape, but that just wasn't enough as there was only an inch (at most) between header and cable. In one of the pics I'm pointing to the old cable position, which I filled with a bolt. So, I pulled out the gas pedal and modified the throw length and mounted it in a new position. I was able to get about 3" of clearance between cable and header, which is a big improvement. Still using all the insulation wrap. It is really tight in this pedal box and I'm just happy to have this job done. Weekend 7. I managed to salvage the panhard bar mount. I cut it off as cleanly as I could then slowly worked it into its new spot. Lots of grind, check fit, grind, check fit until it sat just right. Then I tacked it onto the axle and installed the axle under the frame and made damn sure it fit exactly right before fully welding it on. I also narrowed the frame around the C notch. The bottom rail gets thin here so Ford compensated by making the top rail wider. I trimmed it down to be as wide as the frame is everywhere else. This bought me some precious room that I really need for the bar mount. I ordered some coilovers that will hopefully arrive this week. Once I have those on, I can figure out exactly how the frame end of the panhard bar will mount. Day 3 - FINALLY got some real progress done today. After a bunch of shenanigans of course! Got all the main fuselage tubes cut out of 2” aluminum. Tried the bandsaw first, but the old craftsman just didn’t have what it takes 🙄 Moved onto the big bandsaw but forgot the base got damaged when we moved so after messing with that for far too long I moved on since it was getting late. Abrasive chop saw to the rescue! It’s loud and makes a mess, but it gets the job done. Makes a bit of a mess of the end of the tubes that needed cleaned up. Used roloc discs on the grinder to make the first pass at cleaning them up. Still more clean up to do to get a tighter fit, but it’s starting to take shape already! If I were doing it again I’d have a cold cut chop saw and a scotchbrite wheel on the bench grinder to make life easier. Day 1 ordered and downloaded the plans for the Affordaplane! Ultimately I want to build a true side by side sport plane, but those cost and take 10x as long to build as this so thought it would be a great first step into experimental homebuilding 😎 Today I started out by testing out the plasma table to see if it’ll work for cutting out the gussets. I think it’ll be just fine for the outline and to locate the holes, but doesn’t do a great job cutting them. MUCH better results hand drilling them to make a match set and using clecos to hold it together. Going to hand cut the next set to compare quality and time. Propagation journey 🌱 Although these monkey mask cuttings are already well rooted I still put them into fern fibre in a small clear pot to really get the roots established. Once the small pot is full of roots then I pot them up a size and into a chunky mix. Today they have squeezed into the prop box to put on root growth until I do that repot.
