Multicoloured Ladybeetle, Harlequin Ladybeetle (Harmonia axyridis) I found this little guy hiding in the catnip plants in the garden. Multicoloured Ladybeetles have a ton of different common names, and they also come in several different color patterns. Sometimes, they look more orange like this one, sometimes more red, with more or less spots, faded spots, and sometimes they're black with red spots. They were intentionally brought over to North America by humans to help control aphid populations. They can be distinguished from other species by the "M" shaped marking behind their head. BEE-SPLAINING: How is Beeswax made? We all know that beeswax comes from bees, but how do they make it, and why? Beeswax forms the building-block of the inside of a honeybee colony. Bees build the hexagonal honeycomb from beeswax, and this is where everything happens: the queen lays eggs in it, which develop into larva, then pupa and then emerges as new baby bees, they use beeswax to store pollen and honey and to dry out nectar while they are turning it into honey. In short, bees build their nest with beeswax. Without beeswax there would be no bees. Beeswax is secreted from the wax glands of young worker bees, approximately 12-20 days old. The ability of the workers to produce wax lessen over time as the wax glands start to atrophy, or waste away, but older bees are able to produce wax also. Honeybees have four pairs of wax glands on the underside of their abdomen. The brittle flakes of wax, once secreted, are moved to the jaws, or mandibles, of the bee and worked on to make the wax soft and pliable. The wax is then passed on to other worker bees who use it to build comb. To make one gram of wax, the bees will need to produce approximately 1100 flakes of wax. The wax-flakes are initially clear and odourless. It is only later that the wax will adopt its characteristic colour and smell as pollen and propolis get worked into it. Making wax is hard work for the colony, not just the worker bees who produce it, as large amounts of food are needed to keep the production going. It takes approximately 6,5-9 kilos of honey to produce one kilo of beeswax! So if you're wondering why beeswax is only used in more expensive products, it is because it is quite an expensive ingredient...
