The Lance Lab has been busy this summer not only in the wetlands and agricultural fields, but streams as well! As part of a long-term monitoring project on the Savannah River Site, we are assessing the diversity of the fish communities found in our streams. To sample, we use a method called electroshocking. A backpack with a battery sends an electric current into the water that temporarily stuns fish so that they can be easily captured. We process them and return them to the stream and ensure they swim off! Over 80 species of fish call the Savannah River Site home, but we usually only capture around 20 species at each site. If you’ve been following me here on instamajiggy, YouTube, or my bookface page… then you probably know I love my Pelican Catch100. But as I’m getting more and more into tournament fishing, I’ve battled bigger water, unknown to me water, and fierce wind conditions with white caps crashing into my boat. And with elbow power, that’s just hard physically and mentally. I felt the “need” for a change more so than just the “want”. Allow me to introduce you to the newest member of my fleet… the @hoodoosports Impulse 120!! Ever since I’ve known Paul, decades, he’s always had a koi pond. Our last venture on California’s central coast is no exception. We’d ordered several from various places and a few would always bite the dust. So he decided to do a ‘grab bag’ from a N. Carolina guy who sold by individual fish or a lot of little ones in a bag.
