When C&D came out with Low Country’s Edisto, I bought several tins thinking it would be a good one to have in the ‘plentiful’ category. I opened a tin to try fresh and I loved it; it was deep beautiful reds, sweet brights, but undoubtedly rough around the edges. Some pipes that normally love Virginias hated that blend. But there was clearly a helluva lot of potential. I’ve been smoking out of that tin for the last two years and finally finished it. I went into the stock and debated if I should open another tin or give them one more year. Going through the tins, I noticed one was bowing out significantly more than its fellows. As I’ve had a run of bad luck with mold recently, I decided it better to be sure. I popped the tin and the broken flakes were covered — covered in the beginnings of beautiful, evenly distributed plume. The photos above don’t do it justice. I wasted not a moment (except the moments of drying time…) and it’s bloody effing brilliant. The reds are darker, the brights sweeter, edges rounded; the funky, Va sugar has plugged in the Strat and is starting to riff. Tonight, while manically working, I loaded it into my beautiful @fosterhandmade fourround and it proved to me that I wasn’t (that) crazy; it is that good. But, this jar is going back in the cellar. There’s a question that’s been poking a hole in my tiny-ass brain for months. And it may (likely) sound idiotic, but here goes: I had two caches of stored tobacco in two different places that sat for about the same length of time (between 9 and 10 years). One stockpile, in Lilburn, Georgia, was in a lighting trunk, in a closet, in a room, in a house that stays at 72-74 degrees Fahrenheit year round. The other was in an attic in Kidlington, England and was certainly subject to much more drastic fluctuations in temperature and humidity than the Georgian cache. The Georgian stock was stored in the way I was always told to store/age tobacco. The Kidlington stock was not. But here’s the kicker: as I’ve opened some of the Kidlington tins/jars (that were not stored ‘optimally’), they’ve proven to be far tastier, far more complex, and far sweeter than the Georgian. So, the question: is it conceivable that tobacco that’s been aged in an environment that fluctuates more with the seasons (as any unharvested crop) potentially ages *better* than tobacco stored in mostly stable, unchanging conditions? There are obviously a shit-tonne of variables that I’ve not listed, so I ask the question as broadly as I can. Moreover, the above pictures of 2011 tinned FVF (Kidlington) and 2005/6 jarred FVF (Ga) isn’t a fair comparison as there are years between them and their respective storage methods obviously differ. But, the two tins of Squadron leader were bought at the same time, from the same shop, but stored in the two different places. I imagine they’ll be a great indicator… Anyways, any thoughts y’all might have would be most appreciated! Another commission off to a great home! This was the classic genesis of a bamboo shanked pipe. The plan didn’t start out that way, but a flaw in what would have been the briar shank drove us to preserve the beautiful, fine straight grain around the bowl, and ditch the flaw. I’m really after straight VaOr’s, but I like a bit of perique in these blends too, if it’s in a supporting role (like GLP’s Cairo). @fosterhandmade came. He saw. He kicked its ass. This fourround radiates and pulsates from its center outward; a giraffe-bone shank accent is an epicenter from which bubbles a gray ebonite stem in one direction and burns to a red, contrast stain in the other. The shaping is precise, but soft; definitive, but subtle — the way that the fourround shape is as an aesthetic totality (in my head anyway!). So like Beethoven finding a symphony’s worth of material out of a descending major third, this pipe stylistically functions from a single idea over multiple layers of form. As to its smoking function? Holy shit…. After only one bowl, there’s no question that the engineering is top rate. Continuing with my VaOr kick, I went with @glpease Cairo and the blend literally blossomed in this pipe. And, I put it to you genuinely, who’d have ever picked a giraffe to have a bone so pleasing to the human eye??
