However, once I got stuck in it was a joy to make, the graceful curves and tapering lines translating into a joyful and meditative workflow. Hopefully, some of that joy comes through in the non-traditional tetradic colour schema of the stem and bands. Lightweight, tactile and comfortable in the hand, it’s a fairly thin-walled pipe, and as such, it may get a little hot depending on what and how you smoke! It is made from Italian briar with ebonite and acrylic banding. The stem is SEM limited edition New York ebonite with a stainless steel tenon and the mortise is Delrin lined. Obviously it didn't happen then, and it didn't happen now, because it isn't happening. Holding on to cosmic exit strategies is appealing. I get it. It relieves us of responsibility for the messes we've made. After all, God will clean it up in the end. As a result, folks push both the good & the bad, their hopes & fears, dreams & dilemmas, under the proverbial rug, anticipating that one day all will be made right in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye... Taking responsibility, taking action is much harder. We must confront our own complicity, acknowledge how we contribute to our own suffering. Well Instagram is not the medium to see these nuances but If you have a closer look you will see a pipe in perspective that is sharp from the mouthpiece to the bowl - all over!! Tomorrow, I will begin the process of digesting his absence once again. Then, I will share some stories, some memories, and likely a few more tears. Today, however, I wanted to share how he will still give me a nudge that his presence is still here. The pipe popped up two weeks ago for sale. I wasn't looking for it, it found me. A pipe produced by Comoy's some 82 years ago, likely for a 1942 Penn or Princeton graduate, caught my eye. The letter "P"...1942. It arrived yesterday, and last night, I began the process of cleaning, buffing, and polishing. Dad smoked a pipe for a while. I know this from not only the vague memory of a rack of drugstore pieces in the top of his closest, but the old empty Borkum Riff cans that sat down in his gun shop. They held spent cases, bullets, primers, buttons, change, etc etc etc...I hold several of these now. But I have never had my hands on a picture of Dad and a pipe. A few weeks ago, Mom brought me some random pictures to sort through. In one, with his mother and stepfather, something appeared to be stuffed in the pocket of his shirt. Looking closely, it's a pouch of Borkum Riff and the stem of a pipe. I'm 54 years old, and this was my first time seeing this picture. The lighter is a gift Mom gave Dad when they were first married. We discovered it sorting through boxes a few months back. But the other case, a sterling silver match safe, was another surprise that I hadn't expected. Just a few weeks ago, again, the gift found me while hunting for antiques. With the initials GP, I was quick to secure my new treasure...in honor of Gerald Pullin. One thing that I've learned over the past three years is this - souvenirs, relics, and pictures are at times the last tangible pieces of the memories we hold...and sometimes they will be placed in your hand when you never knew you needed them. The outward appearance is intentionally unassuming belying its capacious chamber. Contrast stained in chocolate and tan the lightly blasted finish is just enough to expose the ring grain while the smooth rim and base add a nice contrast detail. Most of the weight is in the wide base, making for a very grounded and stable sitter. BB&S stands for Bill Barling & Sons and this was a transition era Barling sub-brand. This places the year of making somewhere between 1960 and 1970. There is still disagreement when exactly did pre-transition era end, but it's 1960 or 1962. So it's about 60 years old and it's lookin' mighty fine. Beautiful, mint condition, restored to its full shine. Pipe is a 05 Pot shape with an "S" which in this case stands for saddle stem variation. Beveled rim edge, not a gigantic chamber but enough to let all the juices out of your favorite blend. Black sandblasted finish with some brown stain visible at the bottom and on rim. This was the "Londoneer" series, among most popular they made for the BB&S sub-line. Do notice the very slight bend on vulcanite stem, just to make it a bit curvy. It sits comfortably in the hand and should smoke like a charm. Do appreciate the amount of work that went into restoring this pipe as close as possible to its original condition.
