This was a super fun project to make and document along the way. @markjd1974 reached out to me shortly after the Chicago pipe show to propose that I make him a two pipe set with the rod he picked up from @anton_wewecz. I agreed, and found an amazing block that was big enough to make both pipes. I used the piece of rod left over along with a scrap from the block to make the tamper. Here is the pipe stage I’m working on for photographing my pipes. I don’t have the final photography lights, so the pipe pic isn’t a good one. I still need to give it a final hand rub poly finish once the stain fully dries. The briar oval is a magnetic pipe stand. It will have a neodymium magnet inset into the bottom and a steel ball bearing in the tobacco chamber of the pipe for photographing pipes at different angles. The last thing is to get good quality compact lights. A different Anthony Hopkins… This Anthony Hopkins, is a Denver living mountain loving pipe maker who goes by @castlebriars After being introduced to pipe smoking in 1994 while in HS by his music and English teachers and crafting his first pipes in woodshop so they would fit his Dr Grabow stems (amazing how times have changed in such a short period). Anthony was kinda hooked. Fast forward some, and after getting a degree in engineering and moving to Denver, doing home projects for a decade grew his tool collection, yet his creative side needed an outlet and it was only a matter of time before he added a blasting cabinet and lathe in 2019. As a pipe smoker he was drawn to Italian made pieces and was inspired by the work of Paolo Becker specifically. However, since taking his pipe making further, he has begun finding his own identity and style in the shapes of his briar. Getting advice, critiques and mentorship from other artisan makers…. His words “This community has been extremely welcoming to me as a new maker” From the incredibly deep, beautiful blast on this bamboo piece, to the shape and engineering on the fugu. Both of which smoke incredibly well. Anthony has (and hopefully will continue) grown as an artisan pipe maker and has definitely found his voice. *side note… I still have not been able to grasp photography of black pipes or the fugu shape.. so this black fugu… let’s just say… extra smokes!
