Another three weeks have passed...and this Tuesday will be another round closer to ringing the bell at the James Stockman Cancer Center on May 28th. This Tuesday will be round number 5 (five) of chemo for Ashley...and while I'm sad I won't be able to attend this session with her, I know that the amazing staff will be just as attentive as always, and Ashley's mom will be there holding her hand for all of the poking and prodding. And not putting words into Ashley's mouth, because this is ultimately her story to tell, but I can share that this last round did a number on her. Her team said it would get worse before it got better, well that definitely held true these past couple of weeks. This last round from 19 days ago hit harder after the first few days, and didn't pass as quickly as it has in the last couple sessions. I absolutely hate seeing someone I love and care about go through this...but she's almost to the finish line for this portion of the program. So, there is definitely a light at the end of this tunnel. And, it wouldn't be Ashley if in some way she wasn't projecting a flair for the dramatic with some "Norma Desmond" turban fun, as we all try to keep a sense of humor about this, while not losing sight of the seriousness. These shots were taken several weeks ago, with one of several turbans donated to Ashley by our dear friend Jeanine. Mark your calendar for a symbolic bell ringing on Tuesday, May 28th. This is "The Borrowers" produced by @marylandensemble! The transformations of the stages at MET never cease to amaze me, previously photographing "The Squirrels" inside a hollowed out tree on MET's main stage, to this beautiful telling of the classic story which takes place in the floorboards underneath a clock on MET's 2nd Stage. This is "CHICAGO" presented by Middletown High School!! Not gonna lie, this has long been a favorite show of mine, having performed Mary Sunshine in two different productions over the span of 16 years! Proof is on the gram my friends... But, this post isn't about me. It's about some of the most talented kids in the Frederick County MD Public Schools and their production, directed by local theatre veteran, Susan Thornton...who, by the way directed ME in Other Voices Theatre's production of CHICAGO in 2018. So, she definitely knows her way around the show! These kids are dynamos. Pictures tell stories. I love telling stories. It's why I am so in love with performing, and theatre in general. Also it's honestly one of the reasons I took to photography a long time ago. My business tag line of "I See Things Differently" holds true in every picture I take. Whether it's a headshot, a theatrical production, branding, creative...or of my friend. In being by Ashley's side in her support squad for her cancer journey, I wanted to be able to celebrate her and bring awareness to those suffering from breast cancer, as well as an awareness to get checked in the best way I knew how, in pictures. You've likely seen the posts in the pink tulle, the emotions of that first haircut or the hilarity of the head shaving. While in the studio a couple weeks ago, after we did the last pink puffy dress set, I set up for an interview style shoot. I asked Ashley to forget that I was one of the first people she told, to forget that I knew anything about her situation...and that I was going to take pictures while we talked. I wanted her to tell me her story. I had the camera off to my side so she would look at and speak to me, and I shot with my blue tooth remote so as to not be distracting. In hindsight I kinda wish I had recorded the interview, but after going through the entire set, I'm OK that we didn't. Here are a few of those shots... Also, Ashley's GoFundMe is still active! And on the other end of the theatrical spectrum this is "The Squirrels", produced by @marylandensemble, which opened this past weekend and is currently running through April 28th!! This show is unlike anything I have ever seen or been a part of. The fact that there is a sign outside the entrance to the theatre that states "The Squirrels contains Mature Language, Simulated Sex, Violence & Blood...and is recommended for Mature Audiences" should have tipped me off when I walked in with my camera bag! My exact words to director @julherber at intermission were "I don't know wtf I just witnessed, let alone photographed...but I need a moment!" However, I couldn't wait to get into the second act! Again, I am fortunate to be not only friends with, and peers of many of the talented people who grace the stages of local theatre, but also being trusted with faithfully capturing their theatrical productions. This is "The Wizard of Oz", presented by Other Voices, Inc. (@other_voices_inc_wizard_of_oz) and performed this past weekend at @weinberg.center !! This is the third year for the full sized production at The Weinberg, but it's adaptation by the dance company began just prior to the Covid shutdown of 2020. There were a few smaller preview performances, but there is nothing like seeing this on the larger stage. I am extremely fortunate to have a strong relationship with Other Voices, Inc. Not just with my involvement in the Other Voices Theatre company, but also as a trusted professional in the world of photography and videography. Meech Creative, LLC produced the original video elements of the Wizard used in the show, the promotional videos used on social media, and now for my second year, providing the production photography. Of note; over 1400 frames were shot that were then culled down to a manageable 500 for distribution & posterity. Now, in my defense, I do tend to overshoot for general coverage, but with theatre (and more-so with dance) it is a different beast all together. These are some highlights from the 2023 Kris Kringle Celebration Procession in downtown Frederick!! On Friday the 8th, I had the pleasure of spending the evening of my birthday downtown with several thousand of my closest friends...firmly ensconced at the intersection of Market St. and Patrick St., also known as "the turn". This is the MHS Drama production of the Charles Dickens classic "A Christmas Carol" opening this weekend at the Middletown High School! If you've known me for any length of time, or followed this account much the same, you're likely aware of my love for the performing arts. Both by being onstage and off, whether putting a show together or photographing it for any number of theatre or dance companies. Photographing a high school production though, is different. It's a different energy, it's seeing insanely talented kids living out their dreams of being on a stage...hoping one day to maybe make it to a much larger stage...or simply be happy in their hometown, being a big fish in a little pond on a community stage. This is Amanda Comi of @revolutionmoderndance and these are SEVEN, straight out of camera, un-edited headshots from our session a couple weeks ago...and the ones she finalized on AREN'T EVEN IN THESE!! I was first introduced to Amanda on Instagram during the pandemic in mid-2020, as many of us were turning to Social Media to figure out next moves and how to make things in our respective businesses work in what was fast becoming a new normal. She was working with and following mutual followers and those I also followed. So, naturally, I followed along! Her business, Revolution Modern Dance, is not a traditional dance studio. Professionally trained in many disciplines, you may most likely recognize her from leading swing and social blues partner dancing classes and sessions at Sky Stage, Glen Echo Backroom, The WinTalley Rec Center, and likely anywhere a great swing band is playing. She also holds weekly yoga classes, and still to this day even out of the pandemic, holds a weekly Sunday night virtual yoga class online called Goodnight Yoga. This is Zack Callis! I love when a new client says to me that they're tired of using their headshot from high school, or from that Glamour Shots place in the mall, or the janky one from their friends cell phone. Zack fit into the first category...and I couldn't have been happier to help him update his look!! Headshot food for thought (cold hard facts); are headshots expensive? That depends on the value you place on your career, your visual representation, and the investment you're willing to make. It also depends on your need. Are you a fulltime actor who is consistently auditioning for many types of roles, whether for stage or screen. Are you a regional or community theatre actor who wants to carry themselves as a professional when auditioning, or if even to just have a solid headshot for the lobby wall, playbill, or newspaper article. Are you a real estate agent or business professional looking to update their LinkedIn and social media presence? Fact of the matter is the cheapest headshots will always look the cheapest. There is a reason why you will never see any legitimate, professional headshot photographer in DC, NYC, LA, etc. offering $750 headshot packages for $75 in the Facebook acting groups. Or the "I am only in town for this weekend with a $75 headshot special" Harold Hill'esque traveling photog. They offer those because they aren't getting clients to book with them, let alone pay $750. That's just to make you think that that is what they're worth and what other people are (aren't) paying. Just compare the work and pricing of many photogs and you'll see what I mean. (the real) Headshot session with @jessicalrota! Last time you saw her face, I was bringing to light the fun I have with my clients when we're shooting headshots with a few outtakes. I cannot stress enough the lack of stress when working with me on any shoot, but especially headshots! The only way to get the realness of an actor captured in a frame is to help them by being your own true self. Not posing them, not faking smiles, not barking commands. We talk, we joke, I say some incredibly funny and stupid things, we see how the light is falling on the subject based on the style of the shot we're looking to achieve. It’s funny as a photographer scrutinizing a shoot, culling the images down…tossing missed focus, off framing or a misfire of a strobe…only to go back and give a shot a second look. Main flash didn’t fire? No problem! Drop the saturation, make it black and white. Adjust the color channels, add some grain, and suddenly you have a new take on a shot you first said no to. This is my friend @zoebowensmith and her production of “Drown The Muse”, part of this weeks @capitalfringe fest at the Edlavitch DC JCC! I met Zoë last fall when I was shooting production photos for @marylandensemble’s production of “Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley” where she was a swing for a couple of the female roles. We’ve kept in touch via social media over the last few months, and when her Seed & Spark crowdfunding for this production was announced, it was a no brainer to support her and make a donation. Flash forward to a week ago, when her originally scheduled photog realized they had a conflict, Zoë reached out to me and I couldn’t not oblige. I didn’t know what to expect when I showed up for their rehearsal time slot, I had no prior intel on this original piece, but Zoë and her friend. & collaborator on the project, Hannah (@phippsy_h), both take turns and shine as actresses who clearly want to be a part of an industry that is both extremely rewarding, and honesty just as cruel. A lively troupe of commedia players love the story of Cinderella so much the try to improve upon it. Arlequin, the mischief-maker, boasts about getting the role of the prince. But Columbine gives Punchin the prince's role making Arlequin the prince's servant instead! This arrived today! #IYKYK Someone’s going for their @ourppa certification get that Certified Professional Photographer endorsement. This will add the CPP suffix to my name on all business materials to proudly proclaim to current and future clients that this isn’t a hobby, and that I’m not just a guy with a camera. It will reinforce that I am not only a creative who sees things differently, but that I have the professional training and understanding of the sciences behind the controlling of light, exposure, color temperature, depth of field, and focal focal length to back up that creative instinct. Do I already have a strong knowledge base of those aspects from all of my years working in television, yes. And I believe my work shows that.
