Who am I & what stage am I at? - this one of the most popular questions so I thought id do an update .. i’m alice, at 24 I was diagnosed with highly invasive triple negative breast cancer, not a fight I thought id be facing at 24…starting with a 84mm tumor in my right breast I started on weekly carboplatin and pacitaxol for 12 weeks, it shrank to 14cm YAY! I then went onto EC chemo which was stopped at 3 weeks because it started to grow rapid! Rushed into surgery for a double mastectomy (BYE MARGO & MORRIS) I then went onto 6 fortnightly rounds of 8 oral chemo tablets a day capecitabine, followed by reconstructive surgery (HELLOW NEW TITTIES) and i am now, finally starting a YEAR of a new chemo tablet ‘olaparib’ 2 tablets every day for a year…if i’m not at the end of it after that, shoot me😂😳🤪 I am so positive, don’t give me your negative nancy vibes, ill tell you to reevaluate- I truly believe positivity is half the battle! I am an advocate for positivity, raising awareness and fundraising, I haven’t lost my hair thanks to @scalpcooling, i’ve worked throughout my journey including chemo days🤪 and i will continue to push this page to hopefully raise as much awareness as possible and help as many people as I can❤️ all my love, Alice x x #breastcancer #breastcancerawareness #tripplenegativebreastcancer #TNBC …. have I helped you? Have you heard the update on recommended breast cancer screenings? The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), which makes evidence-based recommendations on preventive services such as health screenings, now recommends that average-risk women aged 40-74 get a screening mammogram every other year. This new guidance replaces previous recommendations that women should begin screening at 50. The task force notes that early detection can prevent deaths from breast cancer, and this updated strategy can save up to 20% more lives. Despite these updates, there are screening discrepancies, and the American Cancer Society, American College of Radiology, and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend ANNUAL screening mammograms. If you are at high risk for breast cancer, you should have a mammogram and breast MRI annually, starting at age 30. Talk to your clinician about your risk factors and what’s right for you. It was the best of times and the worst. May 1, 2009, the day before this Disney trip. I was told it was malignant. Not one of the 85% of benign tumors everyone promised it would be. But, I knew that. Just knew the way you know things. Save the promises for the optimistic. For someone who hadn’t watched their mom, aunt and sister-in-law’s mom die from metastatic breast cancer. Go on the trip, they all said. Nothing to be done over the next few days anyway. Except my husband using nearly every free moment to call doctors, set appointments, get things rolling because his immediate instinct was to 𝘮𝘰𝘷𝘦. Mine was to freeze. Savor every second with two little guys, who had no idea their parents’ world was rocked. Off we went on our coveted trip with the largest, darkest cloud along for the ride. Cancer didn’t care we were headed to the happiest place on earth. 𝘏𝘢! 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳! Cancer didn’t care about two little boys. It didn’t care I’d already lost my mom. It only cared about stopping me in my tracks while life spins on. 𝘞𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘴𝘦𝘦 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘸 𝘶𝘱? Fifteen years later. I know how lucky I am. On that long ago screening day my mammogram had been clear. It was the 𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 that spotted something tiny. The ultrasound my gyno ordered for the first time ever because of my family history. If not for that, I’d have left my appointment believing all was fine. Then walked around for another year, at least! Thinking I was good. I’ve no doubt my story would have played out very differently without that ultrasound. How could it not? Scary AF. I’m still scared. There’s no cure after all. And what of those women I’ve lost? They’re the reason I was more diligent than maybe I would have been in the first place. I owe it to them and my not so little guys. That’s why I’ll always share about fitness and movement and tell you to do it with me. I owe them. Wednesday Reminder. There are organizations out there telling people they don’t need to do self exams. They are wrong. “Approximately 50% of cases of breast cancer in women 50 years and older and 71% of cases of breast cancer in women younger than 50 years are detected by women themselves.” I found my lump and it saved my life. It costs nothing to do a self exam and your best health advocate is yourself. 💕 2 weeks post 2nd op for lymph node removal & 3.5 weeks after a lumpectomy surgery I finally got to do my first workout of this 2nd recovery period! It’s so good to be back! 💪❤️🩹 💕 I have been walking every day, apart from the first 3 days after surgery when I had a drain in, 😩 and have built up my steps slowly. I’m now doing around 10,000 steps a day 😌 💕Thanks @bradgamefit for the support in the last 6 weeks and the weeks to come during my further cancer treatment and recovery! 🙌🫶🏻 💕 I’m looking forward to getting stronger and being able to do more workouts when I’m ready. 18th June 2023 A swim afternoon. Quiet pool because it’s Father’s Day and a little overcast so people have other plans. We hit it right. I swam a few lengths in the cool water. Forgot knickers so went home trousers over soggy bikini bottoms - treat of a wet drivers seat for Dan later on. The noise from the littlest as we got back into the house, me by now exhausted, got me thinking. Parenting a 4 year old with the energy of a bouncing tigger is intense. Remembering the sinking feeling the morning you wake with a start of a two day hangover, realising that you hadn’t thought through the alcohol consumption of the night before, knowing now that you have this noisy little power ball to look after, hits hard. How then, am I going to cope post general anaesthetic, post surgery, during radiotherapy, during chemo? No clue!! I’m knackered now after a little swim and feel the need to employ the TV as my nanny for the rest of this evening. Some people sale through cancer treatment do they? Supporting someone with cancer goes beyond just words; it's about actions and presence. ✨ Here’s some general rules I found to be important in my own cancer journey: 1) Avoid making promises you can't keep. Never say you’ll do something for someone with cancer without following through (without a genuine reason). 2) Instead of saying "Everything will be okay," offer tangible support like "I'm here for you, no matter what." 3) Offer ongoing support. Instead of a one-time offer of, “If you need anything, let me know,” be specific. For example, “Can I drive you to your next appointment?” or “Would you like company on Tuesday?” 4) Listen actively. Sometimes, all someone needs is a listening ear. Let them share, vent, or express their feelings without judging them or trying to fix things. Don’t think these are small things. Between treatments, scans, and medical appointments, there was barely time to breathe. It is what drives my passion and dedication to providing evidence-based education and care in-person and online. We all recognize the significant impact that breast cancer and its treatments have on one’s mental and physical well-being. Or how one’s quality of life and daily function can be negatively affected for months/years after treatment. So, why aren’t we providing the breast cancer community with the education and specialized care needed to improve their cancer-related side effects and quality of life? As a therapist, I have unfortunately seen how challenging it can be for many to access cancer support services. Most people never receive the care they need to recover from cancer treatments, due to barriers such as insurance coverage or financial means. Disheartened by this reality, I founded Well Beyond Breast Cancer, a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of the breast cancer community. Our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of race, educational background, and income, has access to essential services during and after breast cancer. Our Financial Assistance Program provides those in need with funding to pay for appointments of breast cancer rehabilitation/lymphedema therapy. 💜Share @wellbeyondbreastcancer to help spread awareness about our mission and services! 👋🏼 Nice to meet you! Here’s my breast cancer story. . . 👇 I was diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) on October 27, 2014. Stage 1, low-grade, non-aggressive, hormone-positive, no lymph node involvement. My treatment plan was lumpectomy with skin graft and 20 radiation treatments (completed on February 13, 2015), followed by five years of the aromatase inhibitor Exemestane. I’m still under the care of an oncologist via an annual appointment to address any issues/questions I have and schedule my annual mammogram and ultrasound (dense breast tissue). Amidst rising breast cancer rates among younger Americans, a new guideline about breast cancer screening emerges from the US Preventive Services Task Force. The USPSTF now recommends women beginning at 40 years old should receive a mammogram every other year. The previous recommendation was that women should begin receiving biannual screenings at age 50. 👑CHECK IN WITH YOURSELF👑 For this month’s #feelitonthefirst, it’s just me… Typically I find something comical to hold over my chest and encourage women to check themselves by doing #selfbreastexams, no matter how old they are. This month, my efforts are going towards #mentalhealthawarenessmonth. Did you know that 80% of women affected by #breastcancer experience symptoms of PTSD? I didn’t… until it happened to me. Anxiety and depression can take over every thought, every behavior, every event, and every relationship. Of course we ALL experience these things because we’re humans and life IS depressing and overwhelming sometimes. Then there’s the debilitating kind. The kind that lasts longer than it should. For me it felt like I was trapped in a dark room and couldn’t find the light switch to get out. Meanwhile everyone who loves me is on the other side of the door cheering me on thinking I’m the strongest warrior that’s ever lived because I battled breast cancer in my 30’s (twice). Yes, it’s true. I AM a warrior. But sometimes my mind forgets it and doesn’t want to believe it. But listen my #boobiequeens, you CAN find the switch to turn the lights back on and get out of the dark. A mixture of community, therapy, and intentional healing will get you there. We put on our #boobiecrowns and rise like Queens! Heute schon abgetastet? Falls nicht #feelitonthefirst 🌼🌼 Mein Beitrag zur #brustkrebsvorsorge kommt heute erst am Abend. Denn den 1. Mai haben mein Mann und ich heute für eine kleine (Pilger)Wanderung genutzt. Ein Wanderweg vorbei an den Auen der Leine und durch Wälder, in denen wir vor den Moskitos ein wenig reissaus nehmen mussten. 😅 Überall am Wegesrand und auf den Wiesen stand der Löwenzahn in seiner gelben und auch weißen Pracht als Pusteblume. Wer kennt sie nicht: die Pusteblume, die uns dazu einlädt, ihre weißen Blütensamen durch die Lande zu blasen und sich danach etwas zu wünschen. In der großen Hoffnung, es würde in Erfüllung gehen… Ich muss gestehen, dass ich mit diesem Brauch nach meiner #brustkrebsdiagnose lange auf Kriegsfuß stand. Denn mein Wunsch bei jeder Blume und bei jeder Wimper war es, dass ich immer gesund bleiben möge. Das hat nachweislich nicht geklappt. Dennoch habe ich mich mittlerweile wieder mit dem Löwenzahn versöhnt, denn besonders in der Krankheitsphase habe ich gemerkt, wie wichtig meine Hoffnung, mein Glaube und meine Wünsche für mich sind, wenn der Boden unter den Füßen ins Wanken gerät. Die Brustkrebsvorsorge, meine Lieben, ist allerdings kein frommer Wunsch, sondern eine wichtige Maßnahme, um mögliche Krebszellen frühzeitig zu erkennen und entfernen zu können. Daher, liebe Leute, widmet euren Brüsten einen Moment eurer Zeit und tastet sie ab. Und sollte euch etwas eigenartig vorkommen, dann klärt es bitte mit dem Arzt/der Ärztin eures Vertrauens. Und sollte alles gut sein, dann sucht euch noch eine Pusteblume 😉 🌼🌼 Feel it on the 1st.
