The origins of International Crow and Raven Appreciation Day are as mysterious as these dark winged members of the Corvidae family themselves however the holiday is tomorrow so this week’s #FreshFittedFriday selection is a New Haven Ravens retro from Ebbets Field Flannels. The difference between crows and ravens isn’t something most people can decipher so I came up with a mnemonic device: “a flock of ravens is called an unkindness, and a group of crows is a murder ya know?” Maybe I need to work on it a bit more but to be fair, nothing will compare to Ned Flanders breakdown of apples though: “if it’s clear and yella you got juice there fella. If it’s tangy and brown you’re in cidertown” At any rate the can to the right of the cap is “The Raven Special Lager” which is a Vienna Lager style beer brewed by B.W. Next is to google it, which makes me wonder what’s the fun in that? Happy National Popcorn day y’all 🍿 If you’re wondering what a beautiful butterfly has to do with popcorn then you might be pleased to learn that there are two kinds of corn out there used to make popcorn: Mushroom (which coincidentally enough also resembles a baseball) is what you’ll find in a box of Cracker Jack and butterfly which is the kind found drenched in butter at the movie theaters…as well as in the stands at the ballpark! This “Monarcas de Eugene” cap is what the Eugene Emeralds wear when the team suits up for their Copa de la Diversión games and the logo here is loaded with nods to Latin culture as well as Oregon’s diverse landscape. Surprisingly enough there aren’t many popcorn-centric beers out there but I did find a good match in Windrow which is a nice and crisp corn lager from Hudson Valley in New York. My #freshfittedfriday cap is a new release from Ebbetts Field Flannels (EFF). This is a Texas City Stars cap from the Lone Star League. The Texas City Stars were an obscure independent minor league baseball team that lasted for only season in the summer of 1977. The Stars were part of the Lone Star League, a Texas-only circuit that played at the Class A level. All six Lone Star League clubs were “independent”, meaning they had no Major League parent club affiliations. I’m not a huge fan of EFF caps and own only a very few. This is a structured cap that has a more modern look and fit to it. This one looks pretty cool with the green cap and a very nice front logo as well as the side patch and Lone Star League logo on the back. Signature EFF green satin UV. Love they kept the parent club’s colors and a really cool front logo with a block “B” on top of a gold triangle which represented The cities of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange that are known in local circles as the "Golden Triangle." 1980s Reading Phillies retro for this week’s #FreshFittedFriday and I am pumped to finally get this fitted in my hands after only having a vintage snapback of the hat for all these years. This is another stellar creation from @djmach716 over at @newerabuffalo and I’m so thankful to have a solid homie in @yellowsub73 to help me with the assist here! I’m matching it up with a Köstritzer Schwarzbier because when I first saw this beer label in the fridge at @citybeernyc I could have sworn it said Kyle Schwarber! Anyway the dark lager has plenty of nutty caramel flavor and yet tasted incredibly light and refreshing. I really hope the Phillies can pull out this series win against the Dbacks because that team is just so fun to watch. The Phillies fans have also been entertaining so they’re part of of my reasoning there as well. It’s #freshfittedfriday and I’m posting this Asheville Tourists cap. This one is a favorite for several reasons. I love the color combo, the way the very cool “A” logo pops off of it and it reminds me of two people, one who grew up there and was my best hire during my professional career and a friend who is now living there. Not sure what font the “A” is but I’ve seen other renditions of this cap and this one the best in my opinion. A great cap to have in the collection. Today is 10/6 and fans of Alice in Wonderland are probably going~MAD~in the streets celebrating #nationalmadhatterday so of course it would be insane not to feature this Wichita Wranglers cap as this week’s #FreshFittedFriday selection! When you’re celebrating a holiday about a character who famously wears a hat, you have no choice but to showcase a hat with a hat on it right? Also shout out to @xclickaroox for being a stellar trade partner and helping to get this great cap into my possession! While I have much love for Lewis Carroll’s Hatter, my favorite one is the Mad Hatter from DC Comics who in addition to being one of Batman’s many psychopathic foes, is also a genius inventor who works with mind-controlling chemicals and devices to enact his mastermind plans. To me this sounds like the best kind of beer-brewer so I am matching this cap up with Heady Topper from @alchemistbeer! As you can see on the can, the overloading of hops might cause your head to explode so please be careful if you ever do get your hands and lips on this delicious IPA from Vermont. The label includes explicit instructions to “drink from the can” with the reason being pouring the beer into a glass introduces oxygen that alters its intended flavor. Alchemy strikes again! For the purpose of showing the beer’s beautiful color I poured some into a glass however I did drink the rest from the can as directed! Upon closer inspection of the can’s artwork you’ll see that the bearded gent losing his mind over this beer is actually drinking from what appears to be a pint glass. Could this improper consumption have caused his cranial combustion? I suppose you’ll have to conduct your own experiment to find out for yourselves. To honor all three I matched up a delicious cream ale called Mexican Coffee Funnel Cake by Forgotten Boardwalk Brewing with the Las Abejas de Salt Lake hat that the Salt Lake Bees wear as part of Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversión. A lot of folks might not be aware but bees play a crucial role in the protection and pollinisation of Robusta Coffee plants during their flowering season. Arabica plants are self-fertilizing but when bees are around the production has shown significant gains there too so the message is clear that we *need* bees buzzing to help generate that coffee buzz!

This week’s #FreshFittedFriday is the first ever “Mystery Cap” with its own dedicated blog post and strangely enough, in a way it feel liberating to appreciate a cap for its design alone. Of course, there’s an N and a star here so I’ve always referred to this Pro-Line cap as my “Royal Nashville Stars” cap but that star really could also convince me that it could have also been worn by a minor league affiliate of the Texas Rangers at some point. Interestingly enough, instead of associating the “N” with my own first initial I’m now thinking of Nolan Ryan who threw his very last MLB pitch as the Rangers lost to the Seattle Mariners on this day in 1993. So in recognition of this pitching icon who means so much to multiple generations of baseball fans, I chose to match this cap up with Texas Leaguer Brewing Company’s 2 Hopper IPA. I’m addition to being a tasty traditional IPA, I also can’t help but love that the 2 in the beer’s name also references the 22 in today’s date, September 22. Tigres UANL or Tigres, is a Mexican professional football club based in San Nicolás de los Garza, a city in the Monterrey metropolitan area, Nuevo León. A color combo I’ve never seen before and a pretty cool front logo. White front panels and camel color for the rest of the cap. While it’s not a baseball cap, I collect more than just baseball. Alright y’all welcome to another #FreshFittedFriday where this time I am showing love to my home here in NYC as this Acapulco Gold “ILL” hat was selected in honor of the southwest corner of Ludlow and Rivington finally becoming dubbed “Beastie Boys Square” tomorrow, September 9. Those who know me well can appreciate how influential Beastie Boys have been in my life so this sort of official recognition happening now is a major moment for me as a current New Yorker. In short, Beastie Boys are the biggest inspiration for me living here! Back when I was just a kid in the 1980s, I spent a lot of time watching Beastie Boys antics on MTV and a slang word they used that I probably latched onto the most was “ill” so it’s only fitting to match this hat up “Ill Plus” which is a tasty Imperial/Double Hazy IPA from Interboro Spirits & Ales. It is after all, we are still celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop and I’m glad this beer is a staple at Interboro so that I was able get a photo of my hat with the can outside the brewery a little while back. So I have a very old #pirates cap that has to be at least 35 years old. It is not wool but feels like polyester or some other material. For the second year in a row I am featuring a Denver Bears cap for the Labor Day Weekend edition of #FreshFittedFriday in honor of Phish’s annual holiday weekend run, which takes place just outside of Denver at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. Ever since this yearly tradition began back in 2011, Phish has always shredded Dick’s to bits by the end of every run and I’m thankful to have been there for two of those years and hope to get back again someday soon. I’m sitting this year out this year but as I am here giving a think on all the fun my friends are having right now, the significance of a Labor Day Run happening at a place called Commerce City has just dawned on me! 🤯 This holiday is a time to honor the accomplishments of folks in the American labor movement who joined up to create the unions that currently protect the working interests of over 14 million Americans. Today is a good as time as any to learn up on the journey these trailblazers started upon and the work still done today because without unions for entertainment folks, athletes and tradespersons, a magical place such as Dick’s Sporting Goods Park would have likely never been built! And without unions there would be a lot more uncertainty regarding the quality of output from many brands of beer, wine and spirits that many of us consume on holidays such as this one. So today I’m also especially thankful for the Distillery, Wine and Allied Workers Division at The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW)! ‘Twas a balmy evening at the FerryHawks game last night in Staten Island and I was having so much fun I forgot to put up this week’s FreshFittedFriday post! And while I thought this was going to be my season finale, I ended up biting on a box office promotion where a ticket to last night’s game included a voucher for a future 2023 game so it looks like I’m bringing my talents back to Shaolin again this season after all. The Long Island Ducks are the regional rivals of the FerryHawks and even though the Ducks won last night, they are still at the bottom of their division while the FerryHawks are still in the mix for a playoff push. Look at me being hopeful for the local team! A slightly less lengthy post this week but it’s still an important one as we have just now officially passed the 10 year mark of using the term #FreshFittedFriday on my blog! Looking back I’m not sure why I thought adding “Fresh” in front of the already well-established “Fitted Friday” term would be funny or cute or whatever when describing my blog to a co-worker one day at lunch but I went with it and I’m still committed to the bit. Another bit I’m currently committed to is finding a way to tie-in my weekly freshie with a topical theme and for the second year in a row, I’m leaning on #NationalAviationDay for this week’s Riverside Pilots post as the holiday falls tomorrow, August 19. The beer I’m matching up with this retro that I picked up from @hatclub is a hoppy Belgian blonde from @oecbrewing called First Class. The spicy/bready qualities on this delightfully floral ale are sure to be enjoyed whether you’re in the air (although not while at the control wheel of the cockpit), on land (not while driving or operating heavy machinery) or on the water (preferably not while at the helm of a ship or boat). Big shout out to @interstate19 who has a deep affinity for this logo and is who I will think about every time I put it on! He and I made a Pilots-Jaxpos swap a few years ago which is in my eyes a blockbuster trade for the ages! I’ll also take this opportunity to make a plea for Hat Club to please retro the OG blue/red/white colorway of another short lived but equally important Seattle Mariners affiliate that also used the “Pilots” moniker which is the Peninsula Pilots. There’s currently a vintage snapback version listed for sale on eBay for $499 and I’m really hoping that a retro will quench my desire for this cap as I am decidedly unable to afford the vintage at that price point. On this day in 1973, DJ Kool Herc debuted the “Merry-go-round” which is a DJ technique that isolates and extends a song’s instrumental break. Other DJ’s followed suit, thus spawning one of the four pillars of hip-hop. Then came the lyrics from MC’s and breakdancing from B-Boys and B-Girls. The fourth pillar of hip-hop is graffiti however a case can be made that this element is actually old as the very first writing instrument. To me, graffiti (or subway art, street art, wall art, whatever you want to call it) is an ingenious way for a community to interact with one another without a need to be physically close together, simply through through the use of spray paint to create images or short words. While conversely I tend to be quite loquacious, exchanging photos and ideas from my keyboard to the screen in front of your eyes is my way of participating even if I don’t have any “artistic capabilities” myself! I appreciate art though. I also appreciate music, poetry, dance and other forms of artistic expression because life can be short and painful. So whatever healthy, positive and creative escape you have, I can dig it. The entire point of this account and my blog is to showcase the designs on the ballcaps that I wear and @sierragonz_ really did a splendid job conveying the spirit of hip-hop with the “B-Ball Stance” cap that I purchased from @theclinkroom and selected for this #HipHop50 edition of #FreshFittedFriday There’s concerts going on all around the world and one that’s happening close to me is “Hip Hop Live” at Yankee Stadium. I shared the flyer for that one in the photos above and in that lineup you’ll see DJ Kool Herc and Run DMC as performers on the bill. Also, as someone who enjoys drinking wine I was so surprised and excited to learn Darryl "DMC" McDaniels from Run-DMC is involved in wine production so of course I just had to match up this week’s hat with “Darryl Mack Cellars Red” which is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and Chambourcin. Only two concerts left for Phish’s 7-night run at MSG that began last Friday and this week’s #FreshFittedFriday selection properly honors the band’s roots in Burlington, VT! You might recall last week’s Burlington Expos cap was the design worn by the team that played in Iowa so I just had to follow it up with the one that played in “the other Burlington” right?!? One important item of note about this beauty is that this Vermont Expos cap is a “fantasy” design from @djmach716 that @yellowsub73 was so kind to pick up and ship to me! The original logo and panel colorblocking did not feature the festive Montreal elements so this is definitely a welcome rejuvenation of the understated and classic design of the past. It’s the perfect hat to wear to a Phish show and the tastiest beverage to match with it is the Hopcelot IPA from @lawsonsfinest in Vermont which features a Phish-themed name and design on the can. Big ups to Lawson’s and once again huge props to my fellow cap enthusiasts @djmach716 and @yellowsub73! #freshfittedfriday part II features the Princeton Rays. This cap is a favorite as I really like the simplicity and the similarity to the parent Tampa Rays cap. The Princeton Rays were a Minor League Baseball team in Princeton, West Virginia, operating as an Advanced Rookie-level team in the Appalachian League. The team was affiliated with several Major League Baseball (MLB) franchises, primarily the Tampa Bay Rays. The “P” really pops and the sun ray logo makes it even better. It’s a poly/Bangledesh cap but it feels more like a wool cap as it has a bit of give when you put it on. Size is perfect. Before getting into the nitty gritty on this week’s cap, I just want to put out the small request for you to please head over to BaseballMilquetoast.com for more photos and the write-up of this great Burlington Expos cap that @hatclub was so smart to retro and I was so smart to select for this week’s #FreshFittedFriday I’m not sure if they’re taking requests on a “what if” version of the cap but I would love to see the reverse image of the Jacksonville Expos “J” to essentially create an Expos-style lowercase “B” which I think would look great! Even though the Burlington Expos who originally wore the cap selected for this week’s played in Iowa, that town got its name as tribute from a gentleman called John Gray who came from Burlington, VT. And in tribute to the Phish from Vermont taking the stage for seven consecutive concerts at Madison Square Garden starting tonight, I decided to match the cap up with The Nameless which is a super hazy IPA from Foam Brewers who are also from Burlington, VT! This week’s #FreshFittedFriday is a San Francisco Giants cap in an "Anchor Steam" colorway from Hat Club’s Beer Pack released in May 2022. Like many other Bay Area expats on the east coast, picking up a six pack of Anchor Steam is a way to get a taste of the Bay when being there isn’t an option. When I heard the news last week that Anchor is ceasing distribution outside of California, I immediately ran out to my corner store (or Bodega, as they are called in New York 😄) for my last chance to grab some bottles. The bottle’s label in the photo here is the rebranded version that from 2021 and while I much prefer the one I grew up with—which also happens to coordinate with the colors of this cap—I’m thankful that not to be drinking from a dusty old bottle that has been sitting on a shelf for three years! If @hatclub decides to do another Beer Pack my vote for colorway on the Giants cap to draw inspiration from the white, red and dark green seen on the bottle labels of Pliny the Elder from @russianriverbrewingofficial I’m thinking a brown undervisor would work as tribute for the bottle’s color but at this point I feel like I’m being greedy. As we are about to enter the weekend leading into the All-Star break, this week’s Fresh Fitted Friday selection celebrates the batting practice cap worn by the National League players during the home-run derby when the Mets hosted the All-Star Game 10 years ago at CitiField. Time flies by really fast and I often have to remind myself to continually take advantage of all the great things available to me as a New Yorker. And sometimes that means going to as many ballgames as possible! During a trip to CitiField earlier this season my wife and I had the good fortune of meeting Page McConnell, who plays keys in our favorite band, Phish. Page is also a noted Mets fan and was so kind to take a photo with us before leaving the ballpark that afternoon. In that photo @happybee3 is wearing this week’s hat while @pagemcconnell is wearing a “Mr Mets” Diamond Era hat which I am suddenly now feeling the urge to buy for myself! June 30 is International Asteroid Day which is a day to raise awareness of the impacts of asteroids and by probably some coincidence today also happens to be National Meteor Watch Day. But no matter (see what I did there?) which variety you want to celebrate, matching up this Nashville Stars cap with the flagship California Red Wine from Pleiades for this week’s #FreshFittedFriday was the right move. And hopefully using the Nashville filter on the photo was the right move too! Without going into too many science-y details, The Pleiades, also known as The Seven Sisters, or Messier 45, is an asterism and an open star cluster in the north-west of the constellation Taurus. And without getting into too many wine nerd-y details, this a delicious combination of grapes including (but not limited to) Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Viognier, Zinfandel and Syrah that were grown in Bolinas, which is up the coast in Marin County just a bit north of San Francisco. Howdy folks! For those in the States, I hope you are ready for the holiday weekend and that no matter what your plans are you’ll remember to stay hyrdated and protected from the sun. Just as I did last year on the Friday before Memorial Day Weekend, I’m here to let y’all know that today being “National Don’t Fry Day” means now is as good a time as ever to raise awareness of the risks of overexposure to the sun. Today is also National Heat Awareness Day so please please please be extra careful out there today, this weekend, all summer and always! This week’s #FreshFittedFriday post is a special one because tomorrow is #WorldBeeDay so you know I had to break out this Hive Mind cap which was designed by @entireworld.us and purchased through @theclinkroom 🐝🍯🦍🧢 When I first saw the name of this hat, I immediately thought of the lyrics to @runthejewels “No Save Point”: Swine get they hive mind focused on taking mine Get in line, swine, you won't deny me my piece of pie Those lyrics hit hard especially these days when so many people out there all jump in unison to tell you that you’re living life the wrong way and what not. I say, stay true to yourself and as long as you’re not hurting anyone or yourself, have at it! I’m normally not a hazy IPA drinker but I had to pick this one up because not only is the “No Save Point” perfect for this cap, the can design is bonkers and the connection to RTJ made it a must try for me. To make this post even more timely, this weekend I’ll be making my first ever trip to MPLS and I hope to visit that brewery among others while I’m there! In honor of tomorrow being National Train Day i decided this week’s Fresh Fitted Friday blog post needed to be train-related hence this 1993-94 Nashville Xpress cap which by the way is in unbelievable shape considering it’s nearly 30 years old! I picked up a bottle of Trans Douro Express from Baixo Corgo which is a sub-region of the Duoro Valley in Portugal and in addition to the wine being great, it’s lots of fun singing the name in the same melody as Kraftwek’s Trans-Europe Express! I admittedly don’t know as much about Portuguese grapes as ones from France, Italy and Spain however that’s what makes these wines somewhat more exciting to drink. This one was juicy with lots of berry flavors yet peppery with acidity that made it very food friendly! This week’s #FreshFittedFriday blog post is Phoenix Firebirds retro that @ebbetsvintage produced back in 2017 and I hope they do another run of classic caps from the 90s again because there’s definitely lots of us out there that NEED these in our collections! At the top of my wishlist are 1992 Tidewater Tides and Peninsula Pilots as well as the 1983 Portland Beavers. While we’re at it the Denver Bears with royal blue crown and red visor from that year would be incredible to own as well! New Blog post on Baseballmilquetoast.com 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 🚨 On March 24, 2001 Randy Johnson threw a pitch toward home plate that never made it to his catcher and it was not because the hitter in the batter’s box made contact. No friends, the reason that ball never made it is because it struck a very unlucky dove that happened to fly directly in front of the ball during its trajectory from the mound. The probability of this happening is so incredibly low and I’m glad @pageperception designed a cap to commemorate this wild moment in baseball history that I was lucky to have been able to purchase from @theclinkroom I matched this week’s #FreshFittedFriday selection up with a West Coast IPA brewed by @mikkellerbeer called “Burst” because if you watch the clip of Johnson’s fastball meeting that bird it’s impossible to think of another word to describe what happened to that winged creature #RIP I shared some photos and more thoughts of the cap as well as some words of praise for everything The Clink Room has been doing over the past few years so head over to the site for that!
Presidents Day Weekend is upon us once again which means I’ve got another POTUS-related cap for this week’s #FreshFittedFriday post on BaseballMilquetoast.com folks!🫡 You can head over to the site to learn more about how the San Diego Padres almost became the Washington Stars ahead of the 1974 season. But before you do that I just want to mention why I matched this cap up with a Cherry Chouffe from Brasserie d'Achouffe, which is a longtime favorite Belgian brewery for me. At this point we all know the bit about young George Washington chopping down a cherry tree was a fabrication to sell a book about the president’s life but sometimes there’s value in at least acknowledging the purported lesson of the fable rather than placing the focus on whether it actually happened or not. As George Washington is often referred to the “Father of the United States” I like the paternal tinge in the backstory of this week’s cap being “the Padres moving to Washington” although I should mention that I do not support the patriarchy as a general rule and furthermore, I believe women are the best judges of how to make the best choices for their own bodies. Exactly one person shouted me out on my New Orleans Zephyrs hat while walking around the French Quarter today and no it wasn’t this fine model with NOLA spirit! The props actually came from a helpful and friendly staff at Sidney’s Wine Cellar when I was picking up a Muffuletta sandwich. Right away I hit him with a link to the blog since he said he loves baseball hats. Plus he was wearing a Baby Cakes hat so the compliment was extra legit! During my first day in New Orleans I’ve stuffed my face with beignets and po’ boys while guzzling fun drinks. I cannot wait to see what the rest of the trip brings. In short, New Orleans has been nothing short of spectacular and I love this town more than I imagined I would if that’s even possible! Today is December 23 and thus the tradition of Festivus begins with the airing of grievances: “I got a lot of problems with you people!
