Significant change often requires a leap of faith. In 2023 we embarked on a major extension to our creative headquarters in Albury, building our new 100-seat Borderville Theatre with dressing rooms, loading dock and storeroom. This was a long-held dream; to create for the first time, our own permanent and dedicated performance space. Alongside this ambitious construction project, we delivered some major events, and some exceptional training and performance opportunities for our young acrobats. 2023 was a testament to our extraordinary team of humans. Each and every one contributed to the success of a year that presented many challenges, all of which were met with exemplary professionalism, good humour and a genuine passion for the work we do here. We are excited to welcome our first @borderville Company in Residence! Last year, we completed construction and opened our new studio theatre, designed and built for making and performing contemporary circus and physical theatre. Today we can announce that @casuscreations are our first Company in Residence, using our new venue, training floor and studios to explore and develop original work for future touring. The facilities at the Borderville and connected spaces will allow Casus to take a performance idea from its first creative spark through to a tour-ready work that includes all production elements. This three-year residency will not only provide space to make new work, but valuable opportunities for the company to work alongside our current cohort of talented young acrobats. Casus is the brainchild of Jesse Scott, Lachlan McAulay and Natano Fa’anana. This multi-award winning company is currently based primarily in Meanjin (Brisbane) and always in high demand on international stages. Casus have performed to over half a million audiences touring 30 countries, achieving 66 awards, with casts as intimate as 2 and as monumental as 217. For Jesse and Lachlan, this is a homecoming. Both are graduates of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus and met during their time here as students. Years later, they reunited to form Casus with Natano, now regarded as one of Australia’s leading companies. We will be the only Australian partner in their global NexGen program alongside five other international training centres. “This is a fantastic collaboration with the global leader in contemporary circus performance and production. It opens up a world of opportunities for our students and staff; it will provide an Australian base for the NexGen program that will benefit artists from around the country; and Cirque du Soleil will connect directly with our best new circus talent. We already have a number of graduates working on their shows around the world, this now formalises our already very productive relationship.” said Flying Fruit Fly Circus CEO, Richard Hull. “Flying Fruit Fly Circus has an outstanding reputation in the circus community for nurturing highly skilled artists. With over 45 years of experience, they have established themselves as a top-tier organization for developing new talent, some of whom are currently working at Cirque du Soleil.
