I just wanted to share, with cheesy triumphant photo and all, that I’ve finally taken down a St Croix Polo 1 horseshoe, a shoe that’s stumped me for a long long time! I’m beyond thrilled to finally hit this benchmark! It’s not the hardest shoe by any means, but it’s worlds apart, at least for me, from the St. Croix Ultralites. The Ultralite horseshoes can be muscled through, but the Polo shoes took more technique and skill than anything. Thanks @southside_at for all the advice and support, now I know any shoe is possible in my bending journey. I’ll share a video of one of these bends soon, today I wanted to hit it fully focused and without the phone there. I’ve gotten close several times, but was stopped at the crush down to 180 degrees. Today’s training felt great overall, I’m really at full health again, so I thought I’d give it a try. The shoe went down quickly, and I know it’s possible every time going forward now! Also sharing some other portions of my training in the later videos, with one arm handstand work, and conditioning with stalder press to HSPU, and ring muscle ups. . Straddle Straight Shape : Recently, I've been reflecting on the nuances of one-arm handstands. While a straight one-arm handstand may seem visually appealing, let me tell you, it's a whole different ball game. When you do with a bit of side bend and straddle is just a baby step and a very beginner level of one arm handstands, with bit side bend, one arm is much easier than straight steps. 💡 Insight: Contrary to what some may think, achieving a straddle one-arm handstand with a straight shape is a monumental challenge. This is a progress post, focusing on the back (flexed and relaxed). In addition to pictures, I track progressive overload and other things to ensure I’m heading in the “right” direction, only because I’ve spent too many years doing programs, workouts, and practices that don’t lead to meaningful progress or gains. I feel like it’s important for me right now to maximize workouts as best I can to optimize gains. Needless to say, I have lots of work to do in the strength and muscle building department, and along with my handstand practice, it will all be a forever work in progress. Promise I do legs too. I decided to get more serious about strength training over a year ago and started seeing decent results around Fall/Winter 2023. I got COVID in January 2024, and it took a long time to fully recover. I lost both strength and muscle – trying hard atm to get everything back. Strength training is not my main thing. I mostly do it to be strong and injury-free for hand balancing. I’m a long-distance runner and this activity, probably impacts my progress with strength and muscle building because of the interference effect. The interference effect is the phenomenon by which adaptation to concurrent strength training and endurance training is diminished compared to separately training only strength or endurance. This is a general ‘off the cuff’ explanation, you can look this thing up, fact check, and get more information if interested. Don’t take my word for it. I’m noticing that as I get older, it’s a lot easier to lose gains over the age of 40, + it requires a lot of work to get things back (speaking from my own personal experience, and discussions I’ve had with hand-balancer friends who also strength train – balancers that are around the same age as me).
