My trip to #gallifreyone this year was the longest trip I’ve done to the US, partly due to the fantastic room rates I managed to get coupled with a free night with my @marriottbonvoy points! I did a number of field trips while I was there, the first of which was to @unistudios Here’s a couple of pics from the fun rides around the Simpson’s World there. The water park was hilarious. I saw a tourist get DRENCHED when the water buckets finally tipped over. Sadly I missed catching it on video, but just imagine some soaked soul underneath it! And yes, I felt sick after eating that donut!!!!
If you've seen @stevenrickstailoring 's recent post by now then you've read that he was a bit surprised by this little request of mine in the photo op queue at #GallifreyOne , but let's be real—how often do you get a chance to have a photo taken with BOTH the person who designed the most complimented outfit in your entire wardrobe AND the person who put shears to fabric and made the centrepiece of this outfit for you?! Going all by myself to my first #Gally1 was something I could have easily said no to had I not known that @rayholman12 and Steve would both be there. Getting to be the few to attend their joint Kaffeeklatsch on Sunday afternoon was surreal, not to mention listening to the two in-depth interviews with Mr Holman conducted by @amandarprescott and Prof @piersbritton (see p2, credit @aaronrivin ). I'd long had my suspicions that the #BurgundyVelvetCoat was something that Mr Holman was working bit-by-bit toward eventually putting the #TwelfthDoctor in all throughout Series Nine (and that it was meant to be an overt homage to the Third Doctor's velvet jackets—oh, bless all the Classic Who costuming elements making their return in Series Nine!), but I had no idea that the original plan was for Twelve's velvet coat to be grey—MY signature colour—until these interviews! So perhaps the number of coats I commission from Steve in the future can stand to be even greater…? One of the guests at #gallifreyone this year was @rayholman12 so it was nice to see him in person for the first time since making costume for series 13. Ray gave a wonderful stage talk, discussing not only his work on Doctor Who but his path to becoming a costume designer. Fascinating stuff. We made it into the Doctor Who magazine. So, here's the story. We were doing exactly as pictured... Sitting on the floor, waiting for ops to open cuz you always want to get there early due to massive lines. A fellow approached us and said, "I'm with the Doctor Who magazine and what you all are doing represents what con life is like..." Or something like that. He told us to resume exactly what we were doing. He took our names and that was that. Gallifrey One was the adventure of a lifetime. A few lifetimes, in my case. Meeting Rose Tyler’s entire family at once was the experience of a lifetime. It was so cool to meet @billiepiper again (I was a wee baby cosplayer last time she was at Gallifrey One and I got to meet her in the green room)! @alexkingstonofficial was the absolute GOAT and did a wild photoshoot with us. It's really not an exaggeration to say that I owe almost my entire present-day dress sense to @rayholman12 , and yes, those were the exact words I said to him when I met him in person and thanked him (whilst rapidly showing him the photos in the next two slides in this post in quick succession) at the Thursday night launch party of #GallifreyOne (with some much-needed encouragement from @mercysong.tardis that helped me overcome my initial nervousness!). #RayHolman 's #CostumeDesign for the #TwelfthDoctor in Series 9 was, in my mind, a brilliant improvement over the foundation laid during Series 8 in nearly every way, and was what finally fully convinced me that it was perfectly feasible to integrate #DoctorWhoCosplay into one's regular daily wardrobe, a decision that I have not once regretted to this day. And though I do not cosplay Series 5 Eleven, it would be a mistake not to acknowledge that it was Mr Holman who set the template for Eleven's overall silhouette and textures, allowing for Howard Burden to subsequently create a variation on it in a colour palette that agreed with me more. Finally, let's also not forget about a certain long grey double-breasted overcoat that not only got me to start properly paying attention to costuming in film and television but was also deservedly by far the single most recognisable piece of outerwear on the small screen for many years. #Gally1 #GallifreyOne2024 –––––––––– #doctorwho #twelfthdoctorcosplay #12thdoctor #12thdoctorcosplay

Aliens and spaceships and things and... I’m the only person on planet Earth who knows they exist.“ Back in mid February, I attended Gallifrey One, my second-to-last convention ever (allegedly). I was a latecomer to Doctor Who and while I started out as a casual viewer, I came to love what the character stood for. As Steven Moffat put it, “When they made this particular hero, they didn’t give him a gun, they gave him a screwdriver to fix things. They didn’t give him a tank or a warship or an x-wing fighter, they gave him a call box from which you can call for help. And they didn’t give him a superpower or pointy ears or a heat ray, they gave him an extra heart. They gave him two hearts. And that’s an extraordinary thing; there will never come a time when we don’t need a hero like the Doctor.” Through watching the Doctor’s adventures, I wanted to become a better person and the acceptance and love in this fandom is so extraordinary and apparent at Gallifrey One.
