The minute I pulled that tissue paper out of the recycling bin, almost without thinking, my hands started shaping it into roses. When I was growing up There were always lots of roses in the art and gardens of my my grandma, “Miz Amy”. I have such fond memories Grandma and my aunt Rita teaching me how to make ceramic roses. We started by rolling out a thin sheet of clay with a rolling pin and used tiny little cookie cutters to shape each petal. I loved how each flower started as one little swirl of a bud but got more beautiful as petals were added around it. As my paper flowers start to fill the previously bare branches my “New Growth” installation looks like it’s starting to bloom. I feel like I’m blooming too, thinking of how grandma and Rita teaching me how to find this kind of bliss through art. They taught me the joy of creating and giggled their asses off the whole time they were doing it.
