Who says that hiking and partying don’t go together?! 🥾 🎉 This New Year’s Eve I found the perfect activity for any hiking lover: - snowshoeing up to a mountain hut 🏔️ , - being served a delicious four courses dinner 🥘 , - enjoying a private firework display 🎇, - toasting the New Year at midnight 🥂 and - falling into bed exactly nine minutes later. 😅 All in all we had a blast of an evening (and I learned all about Flämmli - a multi-step beverage consisting of espresso and flambéed liquor - that requires stifling the flames by hand and creating a vacuum seal around the rim of the glass to “trap the spirit”. Am I the only one who was completely unaware of this caffeine/liquor/sugar bomb?) It’s a really short hike, but I enjoyed it a lot! I even took off my hat and gloves because the sun was so warm. That’s a real first! Heilbronner Weg 2/3 Opened in 1899, Heilbronner Weg is one of the oldest, most demanding and most popular ridgeways of the Allgäu Alps. I was sooo much looking forward to this hike! And not only did it not disappoint me - it turned out to be even better than everything I expected. 🤗 What you usually find when you google this trail is the ladder bridging two boulders. While this is very photogenic (I had to have a picture of that one, too, of course 😄), there is so much more to this hike. It’s rough and original with spectacular views of the Allgäu Alps for hours on end. Especially the part around Bockkarkopf is quite thrilling - one wrong step here could be pretty much unforgiving. However my personal highlight was when, at the very end of the hike, a colony of ibexes crossed our path. 🐐 It couldn’t have been any better than that. 💗 ⛰️ Heilbronner Weg, day 2 of 3 📍 Kemptner Hütte (1,846m) - Mädelejoch (1,968m) - Schwarzmilzferner (2,450m) - Bockkarscharte (2,504m) - Bockkarkopf (2,609m) - Socktalscharte (2,446m) - Steinschartenkopf (2,615m) - Kl. One of the most beautiful panorama mountain trails in Switzerland is Walenpfad - not just because of me saying so but actually Schweiz Tourismus and SchweizMobil singled it out as one of twelve. You can do this hike in both directions. If you prefer some peace and quiet, choose Bannalp as ending point. If you are looking for some fun amusements at the end of the hike, Brunnihütte is a dream come true - especially for kids. The prospect of a barefoot path, picnic areas with grills, alpine slide, and big playground are definitely something that will spur them on during the steeper bits. 😉 💡 Walenpfad is usally open from mid-June until October. Our 5th (and last) training day should have been another 4-thousander. But since the weather forecast for the afternoon was unfavourable, we opted for a via ferrata instead. And it was so much fun! 😃 When I first realised just how exposed this tour is, my palms started sweating quite a bit. This one is not for the faint-hearted. 😅 But once I got used to having quite a few meters of airy nothing between me and the ground, I felt even safe enough to get out my mobile and capture some happy memories. Back at Britanniahütte after our early-morning glacier tour, we had another hike waiting for us: the one back down to Saas-Fee. It’s a beautiful trail with fantastic views, I can highly recommend it! However after less than 2 hours of sleep (I never manage to actually sleep in mountain huts 🤷🏼) and having hiked for over 8 hours that day already, it felt… tough. 😅 First you hike over small yellowish boulder scree which then turns to smaller grey boulder scree to be replaced by big flat reddish-grey boulder scree and ends with white-grey giganormous boulder scree. While the scenery is quite fascinating, this kind of underground requires a lot of concentration and just as much muscle strength. When we arrived in Saas-Fee at about 3:30pm - almost to the minute 12 hours after we set out in the morning - I felt incredibly proud and grateful. 🙏🏻 There is so much that can go wrong with such a tour but we were all back healthy and safely and had had a fantastic time together. Also I felt incredibly tired. Getting up at 2:45am, breakfast at 3am, starting the tour at 3:40am… alpine hiking is not for late risers ⏰ When we set out, the plan was to hike up Strahlhorn (4,190m) which is a pretty tough tour of about 9 hours hiking time and over 1,400m in elevation. At 6:45am we decided in favour of our alternative and hike up Fluchthorn (3,802m) instead which is the neighbouring mountain, shortening our tour to 6h30. In the end, we would do neither nor. Walking over a glacier is not at all like normal hiking. There’s a lot of zigzagging, depending on the location of crevasses, so that a distance might appear short but takes quite a lot of time to cover. About an hour from the summit it became increasingly more difficult to find a way to pass the crevasses. At 8am we finally surrendered and decided to break off the tour. Funnily enough I was not disappointed. Getting up early, seeing the sun rise, experiencing the quiet and the solitude, being challenged and coping with it - it was such a great experience that I didn’t miss reaching the summit at all. The only thing that felt crazy was that it was only 8 o’clock. I had already experienced one of the most exciting days of my life and the sun had barely risen. 😅 So, we turned around and hiked back to Britanniahütte, arriving perfectly in time for lunch. 😉

Getting ready for the big day 🏔️ After the successful practice hike up Breithorn, preparations started for the first really big alpine tour. For this we changed location, from Zermatt to Saas-Fee 🚞, and then hiked up to Britanniahütte to spend the night there. Britanniahütte is situated at an altitude of 3,030m so the the air starts getting thinner. I don’t usually have an issue with that but when arriving at the hut I had a very slight case of altitude sickness. It actually felt as if I had just come off of a carousel 🎠 and the world was still spinning a little around me. And suddenly my dream became reality… To say I was nervous before my first alpine hike would probably be too strong, „uneasy“ would be the better description. There is so much to think of before an alpine tour, especially when you don’t have any practice. I was glad that I had had the two previous training days - if only to test and try which clothes to wear and where to put what. One of my biggest challenges was to get ready as quickly and efficiently as possible and then not touch a thing in my backpack until the tour was finished. Meaning: Tie my shoe laces with perfect tightness, fasten my gaiter, put on my crampons, decide on my top layer(s), store cereal bar/nutrition in my front pockets, fasten the climbing harness, put on my backpack, wrap the rope reserve around neck & shoulder and fasten it to the climbing harness, put on my gloves, cap, helmet and sunglasses - and then, under no circumstance whatsoever, decide I need the toilet… for the next three to four hours. 🤪 Also I felt uneasy about being the one leading our three rope teams. Luckily Breithorn is relatively straightforward, you can clearly see the track left by other hikers that you can follow (and I had our guide walking next in line, helping me). Still I now get the kind of responsibility it brings with being the one walking ahead, deciding where to go when there is no trail to follow, setting the pace, looking out for possible dangers. With all of that going on in my head I nearly missed that I had actually passed the 4000 meters in altitude for the very first time! 😅 The last few meters were extremely windy so we took a quick photo and then immediately set out for the descent. That’s also a big difference to non-alpine hiking I realised: reaching the summit is not the goal - reaching the summit and coming back down safely, that’s the goal. Glacier crevasse rescue training, part 2 ⛏️ Time to put on the crampons, get my pickaxe, tie myself in a rope and take my first steps on a real glacier. I was incredibly relieved to learn that crevasses do not simply rip open (no Ice Age scenario here) but can always be found at the same geographic place and are therefore marked in glacier hiking maps. This is due to the glacier’s underground - the rock formation - that requires the glacier to bend (or rather break) always at the same spot. Of course there is still the danger that one cannot see the crevasse because of snow covering it. But at least one can anticipate the more dangerous parts of the hike and adapt accordingly. Glacier crevasse rescue training, part 1 It’s been a dream of mine for a while to climb my first 4k mountain. However, hiking above 4,000 meters in altitude usually means glacier hiking - and that’s something I consider quite daunting. Since I like knowing what I’m doing - especially in the mountains and even more so in a rather hostile terrain like a glacier - I decided to take part in a 4k training week in Valais combining theory and practice. 🪢 Day 1 was all about rope technique, different kinds of knots and self-rescue. Theoretically, I now can get myself out of a glacier crevasse after falling in - if I have the right equipment, can reach it, am conscious, can move my arms, are not stuck, have a partner who fixes the rope correctly on the other end and can remember the right technique. When I hiked up Mount Pilatus last time, I had only little time left at the summit before I needed to hop on the last train going back down. I thought there was not much to do up there than to climb Esel (10min) and Oberhaupt peaks (5min). But not at all! There are several nice and easy hikes from Pilatus platform that offer viewpoints in all directions. I chose the one to Tomlishorn, the highest point of Pilatus mountain massif. The cogwheel railway going up Mount Pilatus is the steepest in the world, running (or rather crawling) up a gradient of 48%. Hiking up feels pretty much the same… steep! 😅 Even though it’s strenuous, I actually prefer hiking up to hiking down. Not only is it gentler on my knees, but also it feels like I really earned being on top and enjoying the panoramic view. I was hoping for ibexes, but the hike along Güggisgrat ridge held two different highlights instead: The first was the weather. Have you ever seen more perfect sheep clouds? I just love how they formed, changed and accumulated during the day, it makes taking pictures so much more interesting. ☁️ The second was my companion, a 73 year-old mountaineering enthusiast who was nice enough to adapt to my (slower!) speed. I am so much in awe of her, of how she used to run marathons right until Covid hit and how she now turned to orienteering. When I’m 73, I want to be like her, fit and agile and well-traveled and narrating stories about running New-York-City-Marathon. 💪🏻 So, these were my highlights. If you - want to get the full Matterhorn view (for HOURS!), 🏔️ - are dreaming of finding a wild Edelweiss flower, 🌸 - are serious about hiking, 🥾 - attempt to avoid the tourist masses of Zermatt, 🧘🏼 this is the perfect hike for you! The hardest part is at the beginning from Zermatt to Trift Guesthouse where I sweated heavily for two hours - less than 4km in length, but 720 meters in altitude. 😮💨 The rest is just dreamy. 🤩 I was a bit early for the Edelweiss, only seeing stems and buds but no open flowers. However they should be blooming by now. What I did find was an array of other wild mountain flowers, delighting me with their vibrant colours and different shapes and sizes. And, of course, always the Matterhorn in the background. The next stage on my Jura Crest Trail challenge: stage 2 from Brugg to Staffelegg 🥾 This stage is one of the few short ones and I kept it for a day with capricious weather conditions. However, I was lucky and it started raining a mere ten minutes before the end of the hike. Strike! 🥳 The trail passes the Linner Linde (lime tree in Linn village). Legend has it that it was planted in 1668 by the only man in Linn surviving the pest and that, since then, it watches over Linn so that the pest will never come back. Also, it is said to have soothing properties. Baden is one of those typical Swiss cities that seem almost too picturesque to be real🇨🇭 Its beautiful old houses, the labyrinthine old town centre and the cute little cafes nearly made me forget that I was only mid-way in my hiking trail. (Still, I found some time for a stroll through the old streets and a yummy coffee, of course. 😉) As far back as ancient Rome, Baden was known for its mineral hot springs.
