People’s Park in Chengdu is a nice urban park in almost the exact center of Chengdu known for its tea and gardens that make for yet another peaceful afternoon. I personally went to Renmin (People) Park very early on my trip to Chengdu because it has its own metro station stop to allow for very easy transportation to and from the location. Me and a couple of friends ended up going there to try out some teas and we were greeted with a few locals playing mahjong there and some others trying to make a bit of money by doing ‘tao er’ or ear cleaning and giving massages. Hidden within a city of traditional Chinese buddhism and tall skyscrapers for businesses, I randomly came across a European town within Chengdu. The Tongzilin neighborhood was built specifically for foreigners to live near and these places are full of restaurants and are more so English friendly. While the neighborhood looks very nice, it is a much more expensive section of the city to live in. If you’re ever feeling homesick for European or American food, this would definitely be the place to go to find more variety. Within this section of Chengdu, there is also a place called Nanhu Park which is both an amusement park for children but also a stylized European Town used as the theme. When I went here, the park was actually going through some construction so I was able to enter and take some pictures for free. Huanhuaxi Park was definitely my favorite of the parks within Chengdu, and a big reason for that was the sculptures and general atmosphere of the park. There is no better way to spend a relaxing afternoon in Chengdu than to go to Huanhuaxi Park and just take in the gardens. While it was such a beautiful sight to see, I always did not find it very crowded when I went which just helped with letting me soak in all its wonder. At the entrance to the park is a long path deemed the “walkway of the stars” where multiple Chinese poets are marked with a concrete star etching similar to the Hollywood Star Walk but less flashy. The big white statue depicts Du Fu on the left and Qu Yuan on the right. Du Fu, who I talked about in a previous post was one of the most famous poets that lived in Chengdu. He wrote many poems about being at peace with yourself, nature and history. Situated within the center of Chengdu is Sichuan University, one of the top universities within China. Through my study abroad program, I was able to study for Mandarin for the first half of my stay in China within this university and it was always a refreshing sight walking through the campus. While my classes were on the West China Campus, the University has multiple locations across all of Chengdu including the Wangjiang Campus as well which most of these pictures above are from. I always find that college campuses always have a great appeal to tourists no matter where in the world you are from because they try to catch student’s attention before applying to go to school there. I vividly remember having many night walks across these two campuses with my phone on Quizlet studying Mandarin vocabulary throughout the afternoons. The campuses are an interesting blend of modern buildings that try to capture the essence of traditional Chengdu, and you can see the very popular use of red accents into buildings of these kinds, especially when creating walls. Right beside Dufu’s Cottage is Huanhuaxi Park, which combines great modern gardens with hints of poetry across the entire location. Huanhuaxi Park is the largest park in Chengdu, and it is definitely one of the best places to visit for a peaceful afternoon in the city. Within the park, there are a lot of different areas to explore and things to appreciate that aren’t found anywhere else in the city. The park’s main attraction is likely Green lake, which is the biggest artificial lake in Chengdu. As we were walking around it, we were offered fish food to feed the thousands of swimming fish. While I didn’t buy any myself, I did see plenty of fish within the lake. During my trip to the Songxianqiao Antique Art Market, I had the opportunity to go into some stores of local Chengdu tree root carvers. I was very impressed with wooden figurines before going to Chengdu, but I had never even heard of this art style before coming in contact with some of their products being displayed on their shelves. It was a very awesome experience being able to talk with them (through text-translation) and actually getting to know their story and how they came into the business. Both of them were very friendly and skilled craftsmen and obviously were doing what they were passionate about. I had the opportunity to buy one of these that you can see if you scroll all the way to the right, and bring it back to the US. I always found myself exploring Chengdu’s inner city when I had the free time, and it helped a lot that there were many modern solutions to transportation there. The new underground metro was very helpful in traveling large distances and I used to to get to and from work every day. Because it was built in 2018, the Chengdu metro was very friendly to integration with WeChat and many of the metro stops were translated into both Pinyin and traditional Hanzi on the signs, so while I could not read the characters, I was able to know how to pronounce locations and therefore hear when the loudspeakers announced that we were arriving at a specific destination. What I found more intriguing, though, was the business-ification of a biking service in Chengdu. In the city, there were multiple businesses that allowed bikes to be rented and used whenever. While the USA and some European places I have been to have bike rental services, in Chengdu, you could rent a bike that you see sitting anywhere as long as it is not used and end your ride by leaving the bike anywhere instead of having to go to set drop off locations. When I first went to the Wuhou Temple in Chengdu’s south suburb, I was impressed with the temple complex itself, the architecture, the gardens surrounding it and the large open pavilion, but little did I know that hidden within it was a showcase of some traditional ink and watercolor paintings. Ink paintings and calligraphy are very important for chinese culture and many of the museums that I went to within Chengdu had their own sections specifically for these creations. While I was walking through many stores for artists as well, (I was looking for a gift for my sister who is very much into artistic endeavors), I was surprised to see that calligraphy paper which is very large and usually rolled up in order to be carried was a lot more common than just finding a regular sketchbook. While I was also taking classes in Chengdu, I had the opportunity to take part in a calligraphy class and I gained an appreciation for Chinese Hanzi (characters). One of the main reasons I decided to go to China during my summer in 2018 was because I was interested in learning about different architecture styles in the eastern world. Although Chengdu is filled with traditional areas, and temples are never too far away from most locations, Chengdu is also a big zone for business and entrepreneurship. What impressed me the most in the architecture was some of the big skyscraper-esque apartment complexes. On one of my bike rides around Chengdu, I stumbled upon a gated community with a complete sandstone-colored style across all of their buildings and stores. It felt like I somehow stumbled upon a movie set where everything was built under the same rules for color and style. Being from a Polish family, I was always used to very doughy foods growing up, but here in Chengdu, spice is king. Honestly, one of the most memorable experiences of going to China is walking down street vendors and finding something to eat. Because I was staying in a hotel throughout the time I was there, I was always looking for a new place to eat. While Chengdu was also filled with more expensive sit down restaurants or fast food chains that we might be used to in America, the best and most memorable moments came when I was out for a walk and just decided to go into a new small restaurant. The main road at Huanglongxi was full of people and attractions to look at. The entire town of Huanglongxi is encircled by two rivers and it has a small stream running right through its main road. The main road was also full of traditional shops that sold souvenirs, allowed you to rent traditional costumes, and of course delicious snacks. With this day trip being so inexpensive and near Chengdu, I would recommend it to anyone who goes there, especially in the summer. Me and a friend decided to try the town’s famous one-strand-noodle which was similar to spicy noodle dishes of Chengdu, but as the name implies it only had one noodle that wasn’t cut within it and it tasted great! The people were also extremely friendly and a little less accustomed to foreign tourists. As I get to the end of my Chengdu story posts, I just want to say thank you for the support I’ve received. #Chengdu has a special place in my heart. I encourage each and every one of my friends to visit at some point in life. It’s okay to see a different world and live in it for a bit. There might be times of confusion & home sickness if you are going to study abroad, but with these tips it’ll feel a little less difficult for you. 1) Carry with photos of friends and family. This is helpful if you’ll be away for more than 2 weeks. 2) Make friends with local people! This is especially true if the country you’re has a different language than your native one. Mix in a little. 3) Ask for help. The amount of times I asked for help to avoid frustration is uncountable. 4) Carry an external battery for your phone. Don’t get caught without your phone! There might be a time you need it more than ever and in a place like China, your phone is everything you may need. 5) Trying local food is great, but when you miss home, try to head to a restaurant that caters to or close to something you can get back home. My go to is Mc Donald’s! It’s my comfort food when I’m away. If you have access to a kitchen but some groceries and try to make your home meals. 6) This seems super basic, but be sure you get out and get some fresh air, sun light and drink plenty water. You’re never too busy to take care of yourself. 7) Set up weekly phone calls and video chats with friends and family. If there was something I wish I did more was phone home frequently. 8) Journaling. Writing down your experience can be a good way to get things off your chest and give you a great read for later. 9) Stay busy. Sometimes if you’re just busy, you don’t have time to worry about other things. Have fun things planned. 10) Lastly, rest is important. Make yourself feel more at home by taking a rest day. Near the beginning of my time, me and a fellow student decided to do a quick day trip from Chengdu to the very close Huanglongxi Ancient Town. This was the first time I was using the bus network in China and while I was scared of not being able to understand what people would be asking me or getting on the wrong bus, I was more interested in the trip than anything else. When we got there, it was a great relaxing afternoon of exploration and picture taking. The ancient town was built back in the Qing dynasty and its rustic charm definitely could be felt all around. Because it was the summer and quite hot, we found a lot of locals hanging out in the water and a lot of kids with water guns getting each other wet. Feeling like a unicorn 🦄 If I have 1USD every time someone asked me if they could touch my hair in #chengdu I could have paid off my student loans 🤗😅 I share this time and a special moment with you all! She said that she had never seen anyone who looked like me and I couldn’t believe it. For her to never come across people of color except on TV was mind blowing. She asked me if she could touch my hair, I said of course! Haha, but before I recorded I asked her if it was okay and I let her know if she’s going to touch it, that she needed to get up in there cause who knows if she’ll ever get to do this again! China photo dump ✌🏽 While in Chengdu, I will say I did get really homesick and in the beginning it was difficult to adapt to just eating local foods. The first time I saw a red panda, they reminded me of cuter + fluffier raccoons! I have stories for days about my time abroad. Let me tell you about my food ordering skills. Before I felt comfortable with my mandarin, I would go to the local shop by my university and practice ordering my lunch. I have an egg allergy and so I would always try to explain how I don’t want eggs in my chicken sandwich 🥪 (eggs seem normal to add) but! me with my allergies, I needed to make sure that DID NOT happen. So everyday for almost 2 weeks I would go to the shop and order my chicken sandwich. I was able to practice my fresh mandarin skills. Plot twist: after ordering, the ladies at the shop would always look at me and giggle... I found this odd after a while. Long story short, I ask my professor why this might be. Wǒ méiyǒu jīdàn = I don’t have eggs 🥚 Wǒ bùyào jīdàn = I don’t want eggs 🥚 WOW!! 😅 no wonder why they were laughing 🤭 After taking time to reflect, I realized how much I still appreciated the fact that the lady at the shop knew what I meant and didn’t listen to what I said. So when I started to say it the right way, she looked at me like finally! Haha 😂 Another plus for the people of Chengdu! Many moons ago I used to pursue modeling. It wasn’t until I started getting out of my comfort zone & traveling that I felt really confident in my photos. Being in Chengdu helped me realize that it was okay to smile and get dressed up to get the photos in places I wanted. The comfortability the people in Chengdu and China in general have with taking photos until they get the perfect one is admirable. I was also looked at regardless of what I was doing, so it was the perfect time to practice my poses. The Sichuan opera is one of the more popular destinations for people who travel to Chengdu. This type of opera originated in the 18th century and is famous for its singing and polish compared to other Chinese operas. This was one of the first opportunities to experience traditional Chinese music as well as an opera performer playing the Erhu, a two string instrument usually played with a bow like a cello. Similarly, performers were dressed in very traditional and colorful costumes while performing their unique acts. I’m a sucker for all things sweet x fashion ! while at the Taikoo Li shopping district, Chengdu in 2018, I heard about the @magnum x @alexanderwangny pop up and I had to find it! I will say, not being able to read maps properly and trying to find things were really hard on a normal basis, but for a pop up! this was a mission. Another quick trip from Chengdu to Leshan City to see this GIANT Buddha. Long story short, some of the girls I met in the university and I went to see the Buddha before making our way back to Chengdu after a long eventful weekend. After standing in line for say 2 hours (I think) we realized we had to go! This was probably as close as we got to being next to the giant Buddha, though we were suppose to make it to the bottom and take photos at the same level as this giant statue. Of course, we couldn’t miss our train home with class in the morning the next day. So we got the photos we wanted and experienced as much as we could. I found that while traveling around parts of Chengdu, I always ended up seeing something religious not too far away, and usually at the center of shrines was the opportunity to light a candle. The lighting of candles in buddhism is usually done as a material offering for the betterment of your future and to give offerings to the deceased. In buddhism, the main frameworks of karma and rebirth explore that if you’re in a fortunate situation currently, you can give yourself a better life without suffering in the future if you do acts of good. Similarly, lighting candles often acts as a preparation for meditation. Do it for the kids! ✌🏽 Compared to Shanghai & Beijing, Chengdu is a smaller city in China. People back home would always ask me how I felt about Chinese culture and the locals wanting photos with me, a foreigner. I tell them the truth! With people my own age It was a little strange, but for children and the elderly, I started to understand. Living in a homogeneous environment where people share similar features, seeing someone who looks different is fascinating. Taking a simple photo for memories is a thing for everyone, not just the people of China. Though just a few photos I’m sharing, most parents in Chengdu were kind about asking me to take photos with their children. Some of the children were too young to maybe have seen a person who looks like me in person or even television. This is a thing when traveling abroad and I’m happy the people of Chengdu are so friendly and kind to make me feel like a local celebrity. My first 5-star hotel experience was at the @fairmonthotels in Chengdu as an intern. It was the most beautiful hotel I have worked at to date. I look back and realize how much of an opportunity it was and I am thankful for this chapter in my professional career. If you’re ever in #chengdu I would say it is a must visit. What I realized when I first came to China was that there were two types of shopping experiences. The first, the one we are mostly aware of, comes from buying things at a set price at a store. However, what I quickly learned was that haggling was a big part of life for shopping districts like Chunxi Road, and also Songxianqiao Antique Art Market. At Songxiaoqiao multiple artists would lay out their wares on a blanket or behind a rented small shop and try to sell more unique jewelry, woodcarvings, and stone works. Many of these things were hand carved or historical in some way, and the first price was never the final price. It was an interesting experience to see after the fact which purchases were good deals and which you may have overpaid for after exploring all the stalls. I attended The Chengdu American Center for Study Abroad, located at Sichuan University’s Huaxi Campus. For weeks I would pass by this beautiful site to view lotus flowers. Still too early at the time to get a full bloom in June as they are in full bloom in July and August, and I clearly didn’t know this at the time lol There are many places around the city of Chengdu to view lotus flowers. In 759, Du Fu moved to Chengdu, built a thatched hut and lived there for four years. This time in Chengdu was the peak of Du Fu’s poetry and I had been told that the poet is regarded as the Chinese Shakespeare. Although the original cottage was destroyed, extensive renovations were done in 1811 to try and recreate the area into what it would have looked like before. Located in the city of Emeishan is Mount Emei & the Golden Summit! 1 of 4 Sacred Buddhist Mountains of China where you will find this massive statue of Samantabhadra surrounded by a sea of clouds, because that’s how high up you are. The most amazing moment of my life happened in Chengdu, China 🇨🇳 I felt blessed this day to be able to get this moment, my heart was pounding and I was overwhelmed with emotion & oh yeah freaking scared because I mean Pandas 🐼 are bears and their claws are very real YET Pandas are so cute!! To be able to sit next to China’s own national animal is something I hold deep in my heart. The Panda is a symbol of peace, harmony and friendship and Pandas were often given as gifts to royalty. It took me weeks to find a place and contact to get this opportunity and it was pricey, this day cost me 3250¥ RMB converted is about $500 USD. For a photo? People always ask me about my Mandarin speaking and comprehension skills and this is where it all began. This book Chinese for Dummies! is where it all started. I've been practicing and perfecting my speech since March 2018 and it's still at times really difficult for me. I am natively bi-lingual (english and spanish) and having a third, top language of the world added to my list is a bonus. During my study abroad program, I took Mandarin lessons thanks to it being offered by @gmeochina for college credits and boy they were intense! I am grateful that I did, because it was on my list of languages to learn in life and It has helped me grow in my professional career. If you sit in the teahouse, you will definitely be offered a traditional-style ear cleaning (I was too scared to get it) ,but it was cool to see others enjoy it! International Yoga Festival. While visiting Dujiangyan to witness the white-water rivers (mentioned a few posts ago) and mount Qing Cheng, I had the privilege of watching the international yoga festival, with choreographed performances exhibiting dances, ribbon trapeze, and the highlight of this year's show - kung fu yoga. The balance and athleticism shown by not only the performers, but the enthusiasts watching and participating, was something to behold. The front of Qingcheng was built up with monasteries, temples, and concrete paths and stairs leading up the mountain. It was a very historical and cultural place to hike through and a great way to escape the bustling noise of the inner city. Kung Fu Panda also used this mountain for inspiration in filming their animated movie. Qingcheng Shan in Mandarin translates to “mountain of charm or beauty” which I think is a perfect name for it. Some of the temples here were first built (on top of this mountain!) back in the 6th century AD. If you are a fan of traditional temples, you shouldn’t miss Mt. Near the end of my time in Chengdu, me and others who were studying abroad decided to take a day trip out to see Qingcheng Houshan which was only a single bus ride away from central Chengdu. Mt. Qingcheng is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the birthplaces of Taoism (The T is pronounced like a D). Because of this, while it was a natural escapade into the mountains, we were constantly passing temples and religious symbols as we were climbing higher and higher up the mountain. There are two sides to the mountain. This one I am mentioning today was the backside of the mountain and full of waterfalls and cliff sides. 📍Wuhou Temple, Chengdu If you want to see an old temple in Chengdu, this is where you want to be. The temple is right beside Jinli street. Here you can do some shopping, find local eats and practice your bargaining skills; it is normal to bargain for a better price. I of course came for some history and to see the true beauty of the red walls. Lastly, there is a bonsai tree garden and it’s remarkable. The people of a Chengdu Food Market. The only thing that’s better than the snacks and produce from the market are the people that shop there. The thousands of people that roam this market every day each have a fantastic story to tell, but we only get to glance at their faces. Everyone I met was very kind, and they all did their best to help me. One of my favorite things to do in Chengdu is finding must see places around town. Funny story about this photo is that I thought I was taking a photo in front of the Anshun Bridge (Dongmen Bridge) 😅 it was not the bridge, but I was so close!
