The story of a rod: This is the first rod I successfully made. The rod was a TFO axiom 8wt. I made the handle by stacking various colors of cork rings and wrapped the rod with rasta colors using a cardboard box as a stand and a text book for thread tension. Then I sanded the handle down by hand without a lathe. After applying epoxy finish to the threads I rotated the rod by had until it dried enough that it didn't need to be rotated anymore. This took around 45 minutes 🤣 And I did this in my one bedroom apartment after moving to San Marcos, Texas to pursue college when I was 21 years old. The fish in this picture is the last fish I ever caught on that rod for obvious reasons; because it broke the rod 😥 The fish had slurped a deer hair popper in the lilly pads and ended up collecting about 20 pounds of vegetation on the line during the fight. As I was hoisting the fish up to the boat it ended up snapping the rod. At that moment I was in the immediate need of more fly rods. So the floodgates of rod building opened and the rest is history. “The Claw”, sure it looks great, especially when in the hands of Dennis from @theflyboxx , but the reason it’s so popular with fish is that it actually keels the fly, not unlike the principles that made the original concept so appealing to the Strong Arm Merkin’s creators. The thing that makes “The Claw” worth considering as opposed to the chenille is that it’s consistent.. that part of your fly will be the same as the last one you tied. It’s also designed to fold up on the eat, and just spring back into shape after the fly is removed from the fish. The new @flatscraft “Split Crab” legs are live at beastbrushes.com … Easily the most adaptable legs yet from Flats Craft. I have tied a few flies with these legs in the last few months of testing and revision, an in amongst that, I’ve been tying a version of @doug_mcknight ‘s epic crab fly the Danger Muffin. The Split Crab legs really lend itself to this design, albeit slightly different in construction. The claws are tied in first over a bare shank, then the Deerhair blend (sorry Doug, I left the rabbit out on this one) and then the chenille legs.. after all that, I have used tungsten putty on this size 4 crab fly over a @ahrexhooks SA254 sealed up with @raidzap UV resin to make a 2.53 gram fly. Always admired Dougs flies, in particular this one… I like the principles and it’s incredibly proven. Hoping that the Flats Craft Split Crab legs have a place with this fly.
